Not at all. Every video game company (and even non-video game companies) we're jumping on the CD/Multimedia bandwagon at the time. It was the "future" after all. Can't even fault the amount of FMV games on the system, because that's what was in demand. Gamers/Enthusiasts wanted something to show off the technology.

The mistake was the price tag and timing. Parents weren't likely to spend another 300.00 on a peripheral when they likely just bought their kids a Genesis/SNES the year prior,

No. I enjoyed the Sega CD for what it was. It had Batman Returns, Sonic CD, Final Fight CD and many other non-FMV based titles. The mistake were the FMV games because they're boring as hell and didn't show the true capabilities of the Sega CD.

PS3 when it first came out had $900 worth of hardware in it for $600. It had a PS2 in it to play the old games.

Sega should have took a loss on the hardware and made up the difference with the cheaper to produce software.

They needed to do business like the printer companies.

The Dreamcast was not a mistake.
The 32X was a mistake.
The Saturn's western marketing was a mistake.
The Dreamcast was relatively successful until the PS2 came and bitchslapped it out of relevancy.
Even without the PS2 and Gamecube happening, the amount of money that SEGA bled from those first two mistakes meant that there was no way that the Dreamcast could save them.

They didn't pay $900 for each console. Industry insiders have alleged that they were only taking $50-$125 baths on each console and only then for about a year. PS3 turned profitable after three years or so.

Of what? Flicky? Yes, technically there are arcade perfect ports on the system. No, they don't require any additional hardware to do.

Blame Sega of America for pushing the FMV games. They did so, because it was hard to advertise the capabilities of the Sega CD when 2D games still generally looked like Sega Genesis games.

>better graphics capabilities(as seen in Sonic CD) and arcade perfect ports.

The Sega CD does have built-in sprite scaling and mode 7-like capabilities. This video shows off the hardware capabilities:

But there are some good games for the Sega CD. Popful Mail, Snatcher, Silpheed, Lunar 1 and 2, Shining Force CD, Sonic CD, Robo Aleste, Soul Star, Earthworm Jim: Special Edition and a some others.

Just because everyone else was doing it doesn't make it right. It was a mistake. They should have kept on with the base model genesis and use in-cart add-on chips like Nintendo did with the Super FX (they actually did do this with some carts, but they should have done it more).

At the same time they could have hyped the Saturn for the future and people would actually be excited about it on release.

>> No.4730698

People weren't uninterested in the Saturn because of a Genesis addon that was released in 1991. They were uninterested because it was incredibly expensive and had no killer apps. It had a bunch of multiplats that looked a bit better on the Playstation.

Most of the cool Sega CD games wouldn't be possible on a stock genesis with an addon chip.

There was never really a demand for FMV-based-games, it was more like a manufactured trend based around deceptive marketing that imploded as soon as people actually got to play the games and realized they were shit no matter how cool they looked.

If there were an actual demand for FMV games all the cd-based add-ons would have sold much better. Thank god by the next generation developers took the hint and went back to emphasizing traditional games while still utilizing the advantages of the format.
