Definite, undeniable proof that gamers indeed were smarter back then. Modern gamers would have no idea to use missiles here.

Another /vr/ thread about modern gamers?? This board is surreal.

>> No.4729306

>>4729285
But let's be honest, quite a lot of gamers back then were confused of this part. Prior to this, only the beam weapon and bombs were used to break open new paths, with just the latter used for walls and such. And then the game throws this in your face, with zero hints or foreshadowing anywhere, and shooting or bombing the blocks does nothing. Super metroid at least had the common courtesy of revealing the type of breakable blocks upon bombing them. In M2, nothing.

Unless it's your first Metroid game, you should just be in the mindset to use everything you have on every tile if you find yourself stuck.
It's not about being smarter or newer gamers being dumbers, it's just bad game design that we've become accustomed to because it really isn't that immersion breaking and it's become something to expect from the genre over the course of decades.

I remember being stuck a little, but you only have a handful of options at your disposal so it's hard to imagine anyone being stuck that long.

I did it without a guide and know several others at least who did. But I also knew a kid who returned 2 copies of the first game to the store because he got stuck after getting the morph ball but not knowing how to use it. He was 13 at the time.

Stupid pops up in all eras.

There was a different mentality surrounding video games. People were more willing to try out random shit to progress because we were encouraged to. As game design evolved, it got more specialized, and it got to the point where players were used to only experimenting or doing things when they are told. When we see a roadblock like that nowadays, we stop for a moment because we assume if we were able to do something here, the game would tell us, so we don't just suddenly decide to waste a shot of every ammo we have just in hopes that one of them will work.

You weren't seriously asking for actual proof though. Obviously plenty of people beat it without a guide. But the important point is that there will always be people too stupid to beat any given game.

I also got my copy of Super Empire in a really sweet trade because the dude who owned it before me sucked and could never get past Dagobah.

The only game that I dont believe people when they say they solved the puzzle without a guide is Castlevania 2. Especially on this board.

I beat this game on a road trip from Washington State to Arkansas with my parents, but I had already beat Super Metroid and knew to try everything.

You have to play these games a lot. I have beaten both Star Wars and Jedi, but never Empire. I never had that one as a kid, and now it annoys me way too much to really try. It has that annoying ice sliding bullshit that drives me crazy in games.

Yeah I had played SSW many many times because it's relatively short so I think I was very used to the way they play. And I traded for a deck of Magic cards I also got mostly for free and rarely used, so that along with his declaration that it was too hard made me pretty enthusiastic.

I did enjoy it, but didn't replay it nearly as much as Star Wars and then only actually rented Jedi to play through.

Hey, another anon that gets it!
Of course modern gamers would have no idea, since the game doesn't start with a ten-minute tutorial, and after getting off your ship pop up helpful tips about stuff like whether to go left or right after going down the first shaft on SR388, or mentioning that missiles are super effective against the Metroids.

It’s not a matter of intelligence, it’s more about conditioning. If you grew up with a decade of “retro” game design, all of the tricks and concepts and how they’re often handled by developers are totally ingrained in your head. It’s become second nature to know when a specific design premise is being used and the general methods of approaching it.

A lot of these design principals are considered antiquated and no longer used, meaning people who didn’t grow up with these types of games don’t have that same level of intuition. In most modern games, if you can do something you’re often told you can do it when relevant. If you’re not straight up told it’s possible then you assume it’s not or don’t bother to consider it. This doesn’t translate well to older games.

The other issue is that an entire generation’s collective attention span has completely been destroyed by the Internet-age. When everything is on demand, you don’t need to allocate a lot of attention to any single one thing. This is also probably a big contributing factor to why modern games are designed the way they are, because they’re competing with endless amounts of other sources of entertainment that the user can access on a whim. Anything that may require more attention and effort is easily discarded for something else. So when a user comes up to something they’re not used to and don’t otherwise have an easy out, they’ve no drive or reason to put effort into figuring it out

So not really intelligence, just a massive shift in culture and convenience

You have a bit of a point but modern gamers also wouldn't get stuck at OP's pick unless they were retarded and there have always been people like that. Guy I knew back then returned Metroid 1 TWICE saying it was broken because he couldn't figure out the morph ball in the first two minutes of the game.

Also the modern popularity of genres like roguelikes, sims, fighting games and other competitive games shows there is also still a large base of players who like to sink their teeth into a meaty learning experience.

But these days there are so many games made for so many different kinds of gamers, many of whom see them just as casual entertainments. So I can see hiw it may look that way on average.
