he's not wrong, earthbound is mostly known for its surreal nature, the gameplay itself is very mediocre and basic, if not for the abstract shit in the game no one would care about it and indeed, it was panned initially, it wasn't until the internet age when people started acting like it was some hidden gem that reviewers changed their stance on it, its like the biggest meme game on the planet. It's just straight confirmation bias at this point.

Bullshit, atmosphere goes a long way but it's one of the few RPGs who's mechanics I can tolerate enough to do long sessions of and complete.

Mediocre shouldn't mean panned (it was being compared to Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger at the time) and I thoroughly enjoyed and loved it when it came out. People that were well played with Dragon Warrior and the original Final Fantasy found it dated in mechanics. If they had released the NES one it would have met with the same reaction and there might not have been an Earthbound at all.
