I've been indulging in nostalgia by playing these broken as fuck games, and one thing I've noticed is that the PS1 and N64 versions of these games are incredibly different from each other. Even weirder, the PS1 version, which comes a few months after the N64 version, has less levels. Shouldn't it be the opposite, considering CDs could hold more space than cartridges? What the hell went on with this game's development? Was weird shit like this the norm for PS1/N64 ports? I grew up only with a N64. There's not much info on this game online, so I figured maybe one of you would have a clue.

To clarify, I'm mainly talking about Sarge's Heroes 1 and 2 along with the Air Combat games. Though I haven't really looked into the Air Combat games much recently.

I've never played the ps1 version but I loved it on 64 as a kid. I would say the Dreamcast version is probably the best though. It had better graphics and shitload of fun cheats. I mean, you could play as a raptor.

I've been comparing the versions and yeah, the Dreamcast is probably the best version in terms of actual quality, though I think the PS1 version deserves some sort of note for being hilariously broken and glitchy.

It's neat how sarges head is displayed on the vmu. I think he winces when you take damage.

It seems kinda weird looking back. But why was Vikki the only "real" person with them? I guess the T&A looked better that way, but still.

I used to rent the helicopter ones religiously, one of them may in fact be the first game I ever completed

Because Col. Grim fucked a Polly pocket obviously.

Vikki's mother was a barbie doll.

3DO were mainly an N64 developer for a while. They couldn't afford large cartridges, but they did their best. Basically the PS1 port was heavily cut down because the hardware couldn't handle the game. There are no building interiors in the PS1 version, for instance. And the draw distance is way, way lower.

I've noticed that with other things as well, like when a console of the same time had better specs but had shittier games. I just assume that the games creators didn't really work to maximize the capability of the game. They just focused on making a product kids would play, and something that was fun.

Did this game just have extremely similar music to Battletanx Global Assault, or did 3DO just straight up re-use some tracks?

Probably just the same composer on both games.

It's also because on everything aside from storage media size, the N64 was either better or on par with the PSX. Since 3DO was actually making the games for the N64 first and then porting to the PSX (unlike almost every other third party developer at the time) their games were far superior on the N64, whereas most other games were almost the same mechanically on the N64 and PSX, but the N64 version often suffered in the music or graphical department due to its own unfortunate storage medium.
