other than the fact it didn't include a casual friendly automap, nothing.

Its pretty good. Not horrible, its got cool powerups and if you play it on an sp youll get a nice color palette thats makes most gb games 1000% more playable.

>> No.4718419

It was alright for a sequel. The hunting concept was great, despite the bosses being very basic. The map design is much more linear than the original, but it still played rather well for a OG GameBoy game. I liked the original.

But I recommend that people here download AM2R. It is a really good Super Metriod styled fan remake. Honestly, I liked it more than that Nintendo 3DS remake.

I feel playing AM2R first may have ruined the original experience for me. I still enjoyed the original though.

>ruined the original experience for me.

Thats not a terrible thing, while the GB game was a great game, AM2R was more capable as a game.

>> No.4718843

It's not a bad game, but does have flaws, including:

- linear map design
- view distance too short
- repetitive boss fights
- disappointing soundtrack (yeah, "the tunnel" is great, but inb4 someone jumps in to point out how the electronic diarrhea heard throughout most of the game is """atmospheric""")

Plus points for the save feature and for introducing some cool powerups, though.

But Zero Mission borrows heavily from Super Metroid as well. But yeah, AM2R is the sequel-remake to Zero Mission that Nintendo never made. It's not a bad substitute either.

I like Metroid 2 very much, I really don't need the "worst" game in the series "fixed" by turning it into SM/ZM. desu ZM is nice but it doesn't truly replace 1, same deal.

Demon's Crest on the SNES is one of the best ones IMO. 10/10 graphics and music. You unlock and revisit areas after acquiring new forms, there are multiple endings and many secrets.

See, AM2R was able of being much better because it stood on shoulders of giants - including Super Metroid, Metroid: Fusion, Zero Mission and a ton of other metroidvanias released between M2 and AM2R.

So of course it'd be better, Metroid 2 was a very experimental game.

It's understandable why they went with the Gameboy, it was the current hot shit and needed some flagship titles, Metroid was one such title, doing very well with the first installment.
Here's where things sort of fall flat for it, though.

M2 gets it's atmosphere from the fact that the GameBoy only had 4 colors and they were Black, Dark Grey, Light Grey, and White. This was a limitation of the hardware in one respect, but you only really need 4 colors to make any display. This works in it's favor in some respects, but if there was an option for color, you can bet your ass it would have a proper palette.
Another limitation of the medium is that it had a small screen, and to fit a certain amount of detail in, you have to make sacrifices. In this case, the devs made the sprites larger than they were on NES, but the screen the game is played on is significantly smaller and on a 1x1 scale, so you end up cramming everything onto the screen and having very little space. People say this is intentional but it's obvious it's a retarded way to go about making a game.
>inb4 the cramped screen ads to the effect
It's fairly obvious this game got rushed and some bad decisions were made.
The music isn't that fantastic, most Metroid games have pretty memorable music, Metroid 2 has only a few tracks worth listening to and the rest was meant as filler just to have sounds and keep the game from being completely boring. At least they realized a game with no background noise at all would be boring.

The Gameboy was the hot new system at the time. It's easy to see why they would throw something like this at the platform. They had some good ideas in the game, cool stuff all around. A little too linear, but it's not easy to make a free-roaming game with the limitations of the portable platform. There's a lot that they fit into that little cartridge. It could have been better, but it wasn't horrible.

Super Metroid just improved on the issues of both M1&2.

Many younglings consider anything in B&W to be bad. Many consider anything not in HD to be bad. A bunch of underage having hangups doesn't make Casablanca the weakest movie ever made or this the weakest game in the franchise.
