Shining Force General

What is up with this line. That's like the most offensive line I've ever seen in a video game, especially considering how casually he says it. Please tell me that's a shitty translation.

Also, I just found a Quick Chicken. Should I save stat boost items for after class promotions?

Also what level should I do promotions anyway?

>Should I save stat boost items for after class promotions?
no just give them all to Bowie or Sarah

You could use them to cover up the weaknesses of another character, but there are enough characters that don't have weaknesses that you should never have to.

>> No.4717770

I recently played SF2 for the first time.

If you are playing on normal, i'd recommend just promoting at lv.20. It's fairly easy, and overpowering might ruin the fun.

Stats do reset after promotion, so you'd waste the chicken.
However, a +4 boost is massive early on, so that's a tough call.
I've heard arguments both ways.

I just googled that and it seems that you retain all stats when promoting, EXCEPT the pimento beans or something. So it's safe to use everything else except the pimento beans (+2 movement).

SF2 is terrible in terms of both gameplay and writing. The battles are dull as fuck and the writing was intolerable even for elementary school children. It was a huge decline in quality relative to the first game. I recommend you skip over it and play SFCD.

SF2 is much more refined as a game though. However, both games were pretty unbalanced. You could just level Peter or Sarah to pretty much one man the entire battle.

The 3 SFIII games are the only SF games that I truly enjoyed in the series. I didn't like some of the maps in 1, 2, and CD. Moving through huge forests and deserts for multiple turns was just tedious

You can make up your own "fix" for this line so that it's no longer offensive and publish it as a retranslation patch.
That's what everyone is doing these days.
Woosley fans missing his lines,

It's more the directness doesn't come off as well in English. Shining Force 2 had a good translation aside from some nonsensical name changes, but the nature of the ROM means there is a hard limit on how much space names and shit can take up. When I was doing a romhack to de-shrink the class names I ran into this limit and fixing it would've involved having to cannibalize other names. It's likely they ran into this issue as the class field can handle about nine or ten letters and cut down some character names in the process.

You get enough mithrils to make equipments to everyone in your active party, different from the original SF where you get just one Valkyrie and every other knight is stuck with a much inferior Halberd, and birdmen are bounded to eternelly suck by the simple fact that the only half-decent sword comes and will stay with Musashi.

>> No.4719614

OP here. I'm going to just promote everyone at level 25. But I'll promote the healers at 40 since they can boost. I'll just use save states to get the best mithril weapons early on. I don't plan on getting everyone to level 99 except Karna (and Sheela maybe). So the extra 15 levels from getting to 40 unpromoted doesn't matter to me. I'll probably just get Karna to level 99 and solo the rest of the game with her.

Why did the character names have to be written in ALL CAPS though? Besides looking stupid, it also spoils any surprise as to who may join your party. OP here.

Beat the game (Shining Force 2) last night. Some thoughts...

1) Karna was as overpowered as I expected, but Slade with the Gisarme turned out to be the best character in the game. Slade was a solid member since I got him, and became a top 3 member with a promotion (which lets him use swords) and became the best with the Gisarme and Pimento, making him an assassin who could jump all over the map and one-shot enemies by himself. My main 4 characters were Karna, Slade, Bowie, and Peter. Everyone else was pretty much unnecessary and I didn't even bother promoting most characters.

2) The random battles were fucking stupid and annoying. Bad addition. The first game never had them.

3) The randomness of getting mithril weapons is fucking stupid and annoying. Without save states, it's fucking retarded to get the weapons you want.

Glad I finally finished this game. It's been bugging me that I never got around to playing this game, but I'm finally done with it. Overall, it's a good game, but I absolutely would never play it again, mainly due to #2 and #3.

jogurt never gains stats no matter how much you level him

kiwi begins gaining massive amounts of attack and HP if you overlevel him pre promotion, however because he has a special fire breath attack that does fixed damage he is still not very good as he uses this more and more based on how high his level is

>> No.4725875

>>4725834
The battles aren't random there is some "special" tiles that activate that battle every time.

>>4725867

>The battles aren't random there is some "special" tiles that activate that battle every time.
Those tiles have only a random chance of activating them.

>> No.4726775

I think I triggered one or two random battles the first time I played SFII. I didn't even realize they existed until near the end game.
Makes me wonder what the hell people are doing to point it as a major problem of the game.

The only thing that isn't universal about your experience is that some people dismiss Slade pre promotion. Gerhalt is also super powerful.

Mae, Tana, Higgins and Lemon are second tier. Basically forget everyone else.

He gets Aura. That takes healing duty off your Master Monks.

You get access to all of the characters at Creed's Mansion later on... I want to say after you can travel between continents. Of them, only Karna is actually worth it. Eric is... ok in a field of too many Centaurs. I want to say he's the high attack one. You could make Randolph a Summoner if you wait, which is a slightly better option than being Freeze 4 guy.

Apparently he becomes the best knight if you go all the way up to level 20 before promoting, and so I did. Arthur really became the best knight, but by a margin so insignificant it barely feel worth.
Plus promoting my characters that late in the game made me lose massive stats, and the game became unplayable.
