The GBC mods look bad in my opinion. It looks incredibly washed out, and is hardly an improvement over a front light mod or add-on accessory.

The GB and GB pocket models look pretty good when backlit, but I don't own one. I just have a GBA with an AGS-101 screen swapped. It's my absolute favorite way to play GB and GBC games.

The GBC screen can't be backlit at all, it's only front-lightable which results in a washed out image. You can get adapters to use 101 GBA screens in the GBC now, but it takes a lot of modding of the case to make it fit.

>> No.4704697

>>4704680
You're wrong. It can be done, and people sell kits to do it. It requires you to mangle your LCD assembly and the end results look like crap.

The AGS 101 swaps on the GBC look good too, but at that point you might as well just do the screen swap on a normal GBA because it has a superior form factor and can play GBA games.

Huh, didn't know about that mod, sounds like a nightmare. I also disagree about the GBA having a better form factor, but that's subjective. I just use stock GBCs when the lighting is good and GB Boy Colours when I need a backlight. Both are cheap, effective, and plentiful.

>Not gore but I wouldn't recommend it for most people. It's a lot of work to get it "right" and even then it has issues.

Seriously? It's very easy, one of the easiest "mods" I've done. The key is to take your time removing the back film from the lcd, clean it good, and dust the glass lightly with diatomaceous earth (so light you won't see it) to avoid "newton rings" aka bubbles where the screen touches the polarizing film.

You do have to solder 2 wires, but it's about as easy a solder job as you could ever have in a gaming system. I suppose you could just wrap the wires but I sure wouldn't trust them to make a good connection without solder.

handheldlegends sells kits, and this douche has a great tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xS8NQ3dds2k I'm pretty sure he's a shill for them, or at least got free kits to make the tutorial.

Ignore the source of this link, I found it on google image search, this is the washed yellow and a decent picture of it. In real life it looks better, that pic isn't quite in focus and the contrast isn't quite right.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Gameboy/comments/7l7wjy/washed_yellow_biverted_dmg_ive_done_a_few/

One last thing, do the bivert mod, it's talked about in that video I just posted. It makes the screen look way better. My guess is that leddit dude didn't do the bivert mod.

Assuming both are backlit (modded or otherwise), what’s better out of the original GBA vs the SP?

>> No.4706092

>>4706084
The typical method of backlighting either a GBA or SP is to put an AGS-101 screen in it. So it comes down to whether you'd rather have a shitty d-pad or hand cramps.

>> No.4706113

>>4706092

There's really no point in not using RGB. It's a little more work for massive hipster cred and part of doing it "right". But all those little bits of extra work add up. Like using an SMD dual inverter instead of a DIP hex inverter and then crying about how much space it takes up. Doing it "right" is quite a bit more work and not something I'd recommend for first time modders. But the results are great.
But yeah, if you'd gone with RGB the only time you'd not use yellow is when showing someone you could change the color. It's not quite puke green but gives the best contrast of the basic colors. You can get puke green with pretty good contrast by adjusting the red duty cycle.

Absolute GOAT way to play gameboy family games on a portable? GBA with AGS-101 mod.
Nostalgiafag? If you really like the AESTHETICS of the original gameboy, backlighting a DMG-01 is the only other mod other than the GBA AGS-101 screen mod that's worth doing. If you can pick up a original gameboy for cheap that is. I started doing prosound/backlight mods in 2012 before there were 5 million people making CUSTOM MODDED GAMEBOY L@@K COOL type videos now.
