>a vgabox isn’t needed, but makes switching between outputs easier, as some games don’t support VGA and can’t be forced to.
>Never plug in/pull out controllers while the console is on, you will damage the fuses in the controller ports and potentially kill it outright.
>be aware that the CMOS battery of your (newly bought) console probably will be dead. Not relevant for most of the games, a correct time setting makes playing games like seaman impossible. >starting a dreamcast general
You're the reason why the rest of /vg/ wants dreamcast banned again. The dreamcast modding community is slow. Nothing ever goes on in these threads. It's mainly people asking "how is x ode?" "why is my music not playing on burned games?".
If people have a question about their dreamcast, they'll start a thread for it, or ask in a related thread already up. All you do by creating a general is attract people who want to feel special for owning the console. Why do you think there are no other regular console generals? Take the hint.

>> No.4703824

Right now there's also a Saturn thread (which has been recurring and is similarly broad in scope to this one) and a fucking Wii thread (which is structured like a general, I don't know if it recurs though because I ignore such non-retro things).
I do think that they should stay away from calling this thread "Dreamcast General" though. Just say "Dreamcast thread" and paste the OP. Calling it a general is begging to piss someone (like you) off.

said. You don't have to write a lot of your own compression and decompression code since KallistiOS supports all kinds of stuff like bz2 and png, and it has a version of OpenGL so you don't need to do a ton of your own video code. You can go high-level instead of dealing with ASM, you can easily burn your homebrew to test on real hardware, the console supports a modem, mouse, and keyboard natively, and there's even an open source 3D engine called Iris3D that can be used.

It's the most powerful retro console that is relatively easy to develop for thanks to the hardware and everything available. Odds are you won't need to worry about optimization since most homebrewers will never push the console to it's limits.

Which to me suggests they could probably make a better game on a console that does. Honestly I'm not really a fan of homebrew on older consoles in general.
>The famous flutings on the the famous columns—what are they there for? To hide the joints in the wood—when columns were made of wood, only these aren't, they're marble. The triglyphs, what are they? Wood. Wooden beams, the way they had to be laid when people began to build wooden shacks. Your Greeks took marble and they made copies of their wooden structures out of it, because others had done it that way. Then your masters of the Renaissance came along and made copies in plaster of copies in marble of copies in wood. Now here we are, making copies in steel and concrete of copies in plaster of copies in marble of copies in wood. Why?
I think some Dreamcast and Xbox homebrew was really cool but what is the point of making an game on an older system that is inferior to the same game made for more powerful systems.

Looking forward to modifying the shit out of my upcoming Dreamcast. I got one model that I'll keep OEM for playing burnt CD-Rs, but would like to have an ODE for less noise and more ease in switching between games.

>CMOS Battery and holder (Already arrived)

I might consider it.

I did some research on 40mm*40mm*10mm fans and I found one that would match shell color aesthetics, is quieter, and is slightly cheaper:
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=1YF-006S-00033

At the cost of moving less air, but I don't think that's a major concern.

Compared to:

Still $22.50 for a kit and no fan is kinda pricey.

I don't know anyone with a 3D printer. And even if I were to shop around and save on the cost of the 3D printed part(s), I can't really be guaranteed about the quality/accuracy of the print beforehand, and it still wouldn't come with the fan cable adapter, so I dunno. $22.50 is probably the most reasonable option, even if it's a little more expensive.

Also, the idea was having the option for playing back on CRT TV or CRT Monitor, which always looks best for 480p or lower content due to lower resolutions.

Akura doesn't do upscaling, if I read correctly, so it'd just be sending a 480p signal over HDMI, in which case I'd use it with the Framemeister for 720p/1080p upscale to bypass lower quality TV upscale.

Akura + Framemeister = Still only digital source playback.
Toro + Framemeister = Flexibility on playing back on CRT monitor or CRT TV or LCD.

I remember playing D2 when it came out.
I had got caught with marijuana in high school and had to stay home for three days.

I played this and beat it within one day. I was living in Colorado at the time, so the snow outside my window and in the game made for an interesting gaming day.

I'm sure there's other options. You may want to look for lengths in terms of meters. A reminder that SCART is a European wiring standard, and in Europe they don't use customary units like feet. 1.5m = 5ft or so.

They never really "damaged" the console, they just caused more wear on the gears that move the laser. It's only really an issue with older improperly converted images.

Most DC CD-R images out there these days are fine and have properly sorted files to avoid additional wear and tear, so it's not really something I'd worry about. If you're really paranoid about it, stick to the DCRES and Revive DC CD images, as they're generally very well done.

>> No.4721838

>>4721771
Depending on how the game image is burned to the CD-R, yes and no.

GDROM disks are and the GDROM drive expects data to be found on the outside of the disk, as opposed to CDROM and CDROM drives normally writing first to the inside of the drive. The "damage" you're talking about is wear and tear on the motors that shifts the laser to the inner or outer edge of the disk read area.

A good game rip and burn will pad the inside of the disk and write to the outside edge. That way, whenever the GDROM drive goes from being idle to fetching new data, it doesn't have to move away much from its outer edge resting position.

Early Dreamcast rip/burn techniques and early Dreamcast homebrew scene didn't know this and assumed it functioned no differently from a CDROM drive. So if you have good rips and good burns, there literally shouldn't be anything to worry about, and as such it hasn't really been an issue.

Since then, people have developed a few ways to emulate the GDROM drive, known as ODE (Optical Drive Emulators), which you can store game files on flash media, interface with a menu (like a flash cart for other systems), pick a game, and play. But they're rarely produced since they're manufactured by a handful of dedicated individuals.

It's just a containment topic for Dreamcast console-specific discussion. Would you prefer a separate topic if some anon had a question on Beharbros box to get? Or how to format the SD card for GDEmu? Or other more available ODE options for the GDEmu? Or if the microphone for the Dreamcast microphone was replaceable by standard PC mics? etc?

The general thread format just organizes that information into one thread and prevents a lot of waste topics which wouldn't get seen and prunes other (potentially) useful topics out. There's literally no harm in having a containment topic for Dreamcast discussion.

Lastly, you're not forced to post here either if you want a different Dreamcast thread, either. /vr/ isn't forcibly moderated to only have topics structured as general threads. The problem you'll likely encounter if you want to take your discussion elsewhere from this general is that your discussion won't get seen, won't get replies, and it'll get pruned without satisfactory conversation, and you'll end up feeling like you wasted your time.

Do what you wish, though.

Most games work automatically with VGA including most CDI rips. Some legit games need a disc like codebreaker to force VGA, without the boot disc you just get an error. There are a handful of games that flat out don't work with VGA with any method, but not many.

Google "dreamcast vga compatibility list" and click on the epforums link. It has every NTSC/PAL game listed and which category they fall into.

Not sure. Someone doing a review just said they heard people say online games just had random bugs, but they never went into detail.

I see. I’ve never heard of any bugs in games caused by a usbgdrom or GDEmu.
But it’s true, that replacing the GD-Rom- drive with a GDEmu or USBGDROM causes the Dreamcast to run hotter. This has 2 (fixable) reasons:

1. The PSU in the Dreamcast wasn’t designed to run without a gdrom drive. The 12V rail is unused and the voltages goes up to 14v and creates lots of additional heat. One can fix this problem by removing the 12V rail completely, so there should be no unused energy causing additional heat. Another option would be replacing the PSU with a more modern picopsu or a (plug and play) solution like the DreamPSU. There should be links for them in the OP.

2. By removing the Gdromdrive the original airflow isn’t present anymore and doesn’t cool the console as good as it would with the drive present. One can fix this by using a 3D-printed drive insert which, somewhat restored the intended airflow. 3D printed solutions are available for gdemu and usbgdrom

Or just load the 12V rail with an appropriate resistor.

>> No.4729684

>>4729147
If you're going through the trouble of modifying the Dreamcast to use an ODE replacement for the GDROM disk drive, then you should also just go through the trouble of replacing the PSU, too. PicoPSU and DreamPSU options are in the OP sticky.

I wouldn't (personally) recommend desoldering/soldering anything to the PSU as a novice, because in the worst case scenario, you're going to start a fire if you really don't know what you're doing. That being said, yeah if you're not retarded and follow a guide to the T, you can do it with little background knowledge. Still, the fact of the matter remains that if your GDEMU bricks for any reason, by not modifying the original PSU you can always put the original GDROM drive + PSU into the system and it still be functional. If you remove the 12V rail on the Dreamcast PSU for the GDEMU, and then your GDEMU gets fucked (for whatever reason), you can't plop in your GDROM drive anymore, because you literally removed the 12V rail on the PSU.

Just store the OEM PSU and GDROM drive and replace both if you want to go the ODE route.
