It's fine. I preferred american Sonic's look as a kid. The single buzzsaw style mohawk was cool to me back then.

I prefer japanese Sonic's appearance now but it's not like I hate the old american box art Sonic ( I don't really like the japanese Box art of the games at all )

Because it's a useless redesign with forced changes and touches onto a simple good concept with a great design overall before making its first appearance on USA, disrespecting the decisions of Naoto and Yuji of portraying Sonic. In summary, SEGA of America redrew Sonic, and applied the last-minute changes only for the sake of the western audience at the epoch, that were glued to "cool" and "radical" entertainment.

I like him more. I don’t know why Japanese artists made him so chubby and cutest when his sprite looks aggressive and lean. The American artwork was always more representative of the in-game graphics.

Nigga it's the opposite, Japanese Sonic is a sleek motherfucker. And no, the American artwork wasn't really wasn't more represantative of anything. Of all the US Sonic covers I would only the find the first one decent.

Seeing pic related blew my fucking mind, because I never even conceived the notion that his pointing right hand could mean "Part One", and I'm an eurofag. Our Sonic was like the wokest son of a bitch. It's even in-character for him not being capable to keep a secret and give it out in the most flashy and snarky way.

Congrats for reaching to the same conclusion as Naoto Oushima/TOEI in 1993 when they redesigned classic Sonic for CD onwards (with 3 bringing the actual first in-game sprite of the new design, even if Oushima was not involved).
