So while sitting at the file select of ALTTP I noticed a minor discrepancy on my new CRT. The Link on the bottom file has slightly different vibrancy to his colors than the identical Link in the middle file, and if you move the file select fairy to the bottom file, a small portion of her hair becomes blue-tinted when it's not like that further up the screen. If this is a discrepancy in the TV it's not really noticeable in normal gameplay at all and someone less autistic than me probably wouldn't give a shit but I feel compelled to fix it if it's a problem. Doesn't seem like a problem that needs degaussing or anything, any suggestions? For the time being I'm stuck with lowly composite input if that makes a difference

Side note: I popped in DKC2 and that games looks absolutely beautiful with no miscoloration on any screen that I could personally pick out. That said it's in probably the best condition of all my cartridges, do you think worn connectors on a cartridge could cause problems with the image independent of the TV?

I bought a 720p LCD HDTV when Final Fantasy 12 came out and was super disappointed. I bought a Wii and then lost interest in new consoles. I actually got the most use and fun out of the hdtv by hooking it up to my PC and watching anime and stuff on it.

Yeah I've been searching, TV's a trinitron but the universal service menu code for Sony CRTs isn't working on mine. I don't really wanna do the adjustment manually because I have no experience with these things and hear you can fry yourself if you don't know what you're doing, fuck. Far as I can tell only a sliver of the image along the top is cut off, I'll probably just deal with it til I'm comfortable messing with it

Back around 2006 or so I got one of these from a university auction for free after a different buyer let me have what he was leaving behind.

I never did much with it because I needed to make an adapter to get RGB video working on it.

I sold it to a guy over the internet for $80 sometime the next year.

Back then these things ran like water. You could fill a barn with PVMs if you wanted.

Now I have just about no chance of ever owning another one of those now that I actually know how to use it right.

Nevermind I found the problem, the remote is shit and I had to basically fucking punch the volume button to get it to register. But now the picture looks awesome. Wonder if I can fix this remote so that I can access the service menu more reliably in the future if needed

I got the monitor, and the video conference stuff (which I assume has adapters and cables with it) it's a pvm I didn't look at the exact model number.
It has rgb, and powers on good with no discoloration or weird flickering.

Do hdmi to rca converters add a significant amount of lag? Also is is possible to get a 240p output using custom resolutions or will these types of converters only output 480i?

there are a lot of other factors take into consideration too. Screen size and type makes a big difference.

I finally managed to find a 14" CRT in my area, but there are some minor scratches (more like tiny dents or nicks) on the screen. Has any one had any luck fixing these? Be glad you got to keep it lol. I smashed my pointer & middle (right hand) about 12 years back. Forks on a pettibone literally smashed them flat. Emergency room rolled them back to "round" and there was "junk" hanging out of the side of my pointer where it blew out. I bet that feels as good or better. It was the first time I broke any bones, and between the 2 fingers, they counted 7 breaks....And not a single one was past the 2nd knuckle on either finger.

I still played CS:S every night, and it hurt. It will be a while until the bones heal. I would advise getting an xray just to make sure all the pieces are in the right place....Just from personal experience.

you could be looking at a powersupply issue depending on what's actually getting power, or from being lifted maybe a cable or solder point got loosened up/broke off. That being said with how dirty they are just cleaning them off might help them, as dirt or dust could have moved and shorted some components out.

Your best bet is to start with either replacing bad caps (lol) and just assuming all your ic's are still good because unless there's a surge that killed anything they generally don't go bad.

But work on the powersupply first because that's your biggest issue atm. Next would be the circuit around the deflection yoke, because you might be getting power but if the electron gun is working but nothings "happneing" then it's just not displaying a full picture. Of course if it does turn on and the only thing you see is a bright dot in the center you'd want to immediately turn the tv off as that can burn the phosphor's in that area.

Generally you'd want to see if there's power getting to the main board, so just try a different socket, perferrably in a different room with known good ones, then listening for any transformer hum, because of the voltages it's getting it's easy to hear up close.

It is phosphor persistence most likely. You will notice it most on black backgrounds with high contrast stuff moving fast. Different crts have it better or worse due to the phosphors they use.

IIRC it is caused by the green phosphor not decaying as fast as red/blue, which is why you see the trail of light.

Composite problem sounds like they've got it in 16:9 or underscan mode, red green and blue retrace lines at the top of the screen are normal but usually cropped out when overscanned.

RGB input problem sounds like no external sync is being used, could be just them not pressing the appropriate button.

For the anons in the thread with 8” PVMemes, have you ever encountered issues when outputting 240p?

The monitor seems to work well when I plug my PS3 into it, but my Nomad outputs a weird colored band as seen here. The PS3 and Nomad are both using third party cables.

Is this an issue with geometry/alignment? A cable issue? Or is this just a known quirk for some consoles and these smaller PVMs?

I JUST REMEMBERED I HAVE A 25" WELLS GARDNER ARCADE MONITOR IN STORAGE

It came out of the old Mortal Kombat cab I owned. It had a broken flyback transformer. That was something I didn't want to mess with a decade ago, but now I think I could easily replace it with my current level of knowledge.

I don't think I will be putting it in a cab. I'm pretty done with that concept. But I can build a wooden case for it and turn it into a nice RGB monitor.

Has anyone got a link to someone else's build that did the same thing? I know MAS used to sell such monitors in wood cases.

I have a question/issue and know one of you has experienced it.

I have a GDM-Fw 900. I picked it up 12ish years ago, and it is still going strong. I scratched up the anti-glare coating moving the heavy son of a gun on my belt buckle....which is just a basic steel buckle...right in the center of the screen. It did not get past the glare coat.

It has been 3 months, and I was so broken hearted, I have been using some shit LCD (asus 144hz). I finally got tired of the inability of the LCD to do simple things like contrast & true black.

Any of you remove the glare coating? I am VERY diy friendly, but not electronics friendly. Any highly electrified components that are easily crossed with a screw driver? Did you enjoy the clean look?

I did manage to "buff" out the scratch using ISO alcohol...which only made it worse, so I tried to "smooth" out the whole damn screen... but now the screen looks like total ass....basically like it got drug across a beach.

I saw some online reviews and it looks like a 2/10 type of difficulty. I am just looking for some pep talk. Someone who has done this, please tell me its going to be OK.

If it tears off you should be fine. But under no circumstances should you attempt to rub it off, especially with any kind of brush or scrubbing pad. I ruined a good NEC Syncmaster monitor doing that.

I did find that thread, and honestly I still think I have some posts in it from a long time ago. I am just really bummed that this happened. A scratch right in the center of the screen really fudged it up. I thought I would try to make it bearable, only to make it much much worse.....quite possibly how others managed it. I can tell you that the "smooth" part of the screen has much better clarity then the rest of it already lol. I remember when this beast looked pristine. Picked it up for $50 but had to drive 2 hours to get it. Some engineering firm went belly up and I should have gotten all 3 from them, but was too stupid to see how valuable they were. I never really thought much about CRTs because I always had them. My first LCD is this 144hz 24" and I am not impressed at all. The first year I had it, it sat unused. I should have boxed this monitor up better when we moved, but I got lazy and figured nothing would happen.

The price seems steep for a local pickup, but people aren’t in the dark about what PVMs are anymore and a 1350 does do RGB based off what I can find.

I think if you really want a PVM it’s worth jumping on if it works, but it doesn’t exactly feel like a “deal” for that price.

I have this PVM, its pretty good actually. It has RGB, about 2 composite inputs and an S-Video, although no component. It has mono sound though, and 450 TVL. Although to be honest I really don't see a difference with many of the stuff that gets posted here. If you'd like you I can get take a few photos with some RGB consoles I have an a composite NES.

This was hands down one of the easiest "mods" I have yet to do. In addition, the screen looks totally different. I was able to turn down brighness and the clarity of letters and words is astounding. After talking with the wife, we suspect that this has been with us 14+ years. I can see now why so many have done it, and I feel like an idiot for not doing this sooner. It came off without an issue, and left no trace of adhesive behind. It was a bit tough to get it started, but once I got to pulling it was simple. 20 minutes from start to finish. WEAR GLOVES IF YOU TRY THIS! The glare coating screen has the thickness of a placemat at a restaurant, and the edges cut. I managed a large "paper-cut" grade slash in my finger from pulling at the edge too hard. I have various gloves, and the "cut resistant" rubber coated ones gave me better grip then my sweaty hands.

10/10 Would do again.

Behold the mighty KV32-S42. Amazing screen and it's a curved tube. Shit looks so ca$h just with composite. Best part, it was free. Don't get me wrong, pvms/bvms are amazing but not worth the price theyre going for now. I have a PVM-20M2U and enjoy the 32" consumer set more. 20" is a bit on the small side for having friends over and shit.

I have only used Sony CRT tech over the years. I had a 22" 4:3 sony that I had way back in the day that this replaced, and wish I had not gotten rid of it. It was an amazing 1600x1200 display. Never used a plasma display, though wish I did. I have been shopping for a 720p plasma big screen, but I don't know squat about the technology.

I was screwing with the Nvidia control panel last night, and I think it accepts 240p/60hz input. I may look into VGA games that work with it. I may hook my wii up to it.
As for "modern" games....It is hooked to my PC. It took some shopping around, but apparently the GTX 9XX series of Nvidia cards is the last to support analog output. Games look amazing.

In the last 14 years, I have been using this at various resolutions and refresh rates as technology would allow. 1280x800@100hz was a common gaming resolution for counter strike.

LCDs are junk in comparison. They try to relate to CRTs by claiming they have "refresh rates of 144hz" but I think its a marketing gimmick. I bought an Asus 144hz monitor a bit over a year ago, and It just doesn't seem as good. small text is certainly more clear, but overall it doesn't seem as smooth. Vsync gameplay does not compare. It seemed to suffer from screen tearing as well. It is hard to compare to 2304x1440 @ 90hz vsync'd.

Everyone says this is the best CRT ever made for PC. I figured this would happen....I am spoiled rotten now. I won't know what to do when it dies or cannot be made to work with current tech. GTX 960 has some power with it, and may outlast this monitor. I only recently upgraded from a gtx 260, and my the rest of my PC is 10 years old with ddr2 & quad core phenomII. The most modern games I run on it are Stalker Shadows of Chernobyl Dark Souls & borderlands 2 on occasion. Dark Souls looks AMAZING with proper modification.

That's going to be out of range for the FW900; You're going to need ~30khz as the minimum horizontal frequency for it to recognize it, which would either be 480p60 or 240p120. Just picked up a PVM for cheap on eBay, I plugged my Super Famicom into it via SCART and found that it looks as though either the image or the screen itself is crooked, leaning a few degress counter-clockwise.

I think maybe it got banged around during shipping and something fell out of alignment, is this something I might be able to fix?

There's another issue where the image has a general horizontal 'jitter' to it, but I've not been able to test any other consoles so I don't know if it could be the monitor, the console, or the cheap SCART cable. I'll be able to post some pictures later.

Mmm, I've seen some cases where a CRT wasn't powering on or off consistently and it was due to a cracked PCB, some of the traces were "cut off" and only making contact when the CRT was in a very specific position, you could check if there is anything of the sort, if that is the case then making bridges over the cut traces could do the trick.

I really really doubt that capacitors could be your problems if it did power on when you went to pick it up, most likely physical stress managed to break something loose.

You can try rotating the yoke, but it can be tricky. When you move it, in any direction, the convergence an purity will start to shift. This means you need to do it while the set is on, with a mostly white grid pattern on the screen. But PVM's are often packed with boards and cables so you may need to make room inside because you don't want to touch anything but the yoke. Some of it is live, and some of it you don't want to bump.

Before you start, make sure to mark the position of the yoke, the convergence rings, the landing magnet, and any of that other weird stuff Sony clutters the neck with, and take a lot of photos.

Then maybe even get a Trinitron because sony's are a bit harder. And then the PVM.

As for the jitter, than can be a bitch. After trying a few different video sources and signal types, if you find the problem is persistent I hear C592 is a likely candidate to replace for this in PVM-13/14/19/20/M series models, which all use similar deflection circuitry. After that, get the service manual for your model and a multimeter and start thinking.

What's causing the wavy lines in the top part of the picture? I tried adjusting the geometry but none of the adjustments can correct it. Is it a bad capacitor? There's also the fact that the geometry on the upper third of the screen is slightly more stretched out vertically than the rest of the screen. This monitor only has pincushion and vertical/horizontal center/size adjustments as far as I can tell though.

Also, not sure you can tell in this pic, but the top right corner is slightly discolored and degaussing doesn't work. What can be done to fix that?

The wavy lines at the top are a horizontal alligenment issue. What settings adjust horizontal position? On my arcade monitor there’s a pot that, when adjusted too far left or right, causes those wavy lines at the top to spring up. I don’t know what the equivalent on a consumer CRT would be though

This is a PVM-2530 and all the adjustments are internal. I did try adjusting the horizontal position, but that doesn't make any difference. Stretching out the horizontal size makes it a little better, but then the problem is that the vertical geometry gets more fucked and can't be corrected with pincushion.

Do you know if there's any way to adjust the geometry so that the top half of the screen is more uniform with the bottom half? It's hard to tell in that pic, but the squares in the top half are slightly more vertically stretched than the bottom half. Been playing earthbound recently and have sarted to have this wierd fading issue.

For whatever reason, the picture keeps becoming paler with a greenish tint while I'm playing. Left is what I'm talking about, right is what I've got it normally set at. It sort of just fades to the picture on the left randomly.

Any ideas? It's a PVM 14M2U.

As an update to this, I found an outfit that will change the PVM's caps early this week. The price to repair it will come out to a little over the price of getting it in the first place, but it's still a bit under the price of buying it from an eBay reseller.

RetroArch + shaders would look 99% identical to a PVM/BVM when set up properly. It's also good for a myriad of other things.

There's no real secret to it at all, and it has been discussed on previous versions of this thread several times (sometimes by me). Any high resolution CRT can be combined with scanline filters and shaders to get an image that is a very close match to what you get with a nice RGB production monitor.

I spent a long time fooling around with 240p@120hz modes with PC CRTs for years before I finally accepted that there is indeed extra motion blur in that mode, and after that I took other anons advice and started using higher resolutions @ 60hz.

I've owned lots of different RGB monitors over the years. Today I visited my CRT junkyard/graveyard to check up on my Wells Gardner arcade monitor. It's still in decent shape by virtue of being in a different room.

By anyway, I used to own different RGB monitors too before fate took them away from me, and now I have to make due with a 19" PC CRT and a 13" composite video monitor (and my LCD monitors). And I can tell you that in 1600x1200@60hz with Retroarch + CRT aperture.cgp shader on the image looks almost identical to what I used to see on my AM-3501R in true 240p60. I mean it is really, really close.

You could get something that looks very much like one of those Sony BVMs if you took a high resolution PC Trinitron (or any other good monitor like some of the 21" Viewsonics) by this same method. Only caveat is you have to do emulation (until someone figures out how to scale and apply filters to incoming video signals with a PC capture card).

How would this do with a 1080i HDTV? I wish I had one to test it with. I would assume pretty well since 1920x1080 is plenty of pixels to work with, but interlacing may come into play in fast moving action.

I think it's possible some day a person could figure out how to change the firmware or OS on some of the HDTVs so they can display 240p natively. That's beyond my level of technical knowledge.

I think if someone could hack the HD Sony Wegas it would probably involve desoldering a ROM chip somewhere inside and replacing it with a different one that tells the CRT what to do with video signals and doesn't scale 240p into 1080i/540p or whatever. It may be possible to turn these into true multi-sync monitors. Again, that's beyond my technical knowledge.

Going through all my old CRTs was kind of surreal since I haven't been back down there in a long time now. There were some in there I forgot I had, like a 19" Emerson television with a flat screen. It might be an aperture grille design, maybe a rebranded Trinitron made to lower standards. It does support s-video.

"other" ones? I bet I know what you are referring to. The brother to the PVM series: the CVM (Color Video Monitor).

CVM's lack RGB inputs, and instead have television tuners, but otherwise are nearly identical to the equivalent PVM model. And they are much cheaper.

If you're running in 240p and have something that can produce a very good composite video signal such as a Gamecube the image will look really good on one of these. In the smaller size CRTs and sitting back a couple of feet the difference is negligible.

In the future these will probably start to become popular when all the PVM/BVM units have been recycled or found their way into the hands of people who don't want to get rid of them. Then people will start modding the CVMs into PVMs.

There are CRT projectors out there too that I have noticed not much exploration has been done with.

Has anyone here managed to get a CRT monitor (31Khz) to run properly on retroarch at the correct resolutions/aspect ratio of arcade games?

I followed a guide to get 240p running on the CRT and it worked, however there are issues when running games that aren't exactly suited for this resolution (pixel stretching). I've read online about setting the CRT to a super resolution like 1920x240 or 3840x480 and let the aspect ratio make the image fit, thus erasing any issues, however I don't know how to do this. Any help would be appreciated.

Without redoing a decent amount of supporting circuitry, it's not really doable.

You could perhaps get around all the processing and get a native 1080i/540p screen that will do those resolutions with no delay what so ever, but that's a bit more of a niche use case, I feel. Might also have a lot of trouble actually getting the geometry and such looking right, with all the processing they have going on for that.

Pretty good units. They are heavy as fuck if you get the larger sized ones. I have a 4:3 and a widescreen one. They weigh over 250lbs each for the ones that are like 36".

They have a little strange geometry near the corners. In 240p test suite they will trigger autism, but in game the geometry issues aren't really noticeable.

Provided I am only playing Japanese region games is there a problem with using a 100hz Trinitron? Its in 60hz when playing NTSC games so I should be avoiding the typical problems of 100hz and games look great and have no input lag to my untrained eye. I still have my 21" Philips so I have tested them against each other.

You're confused. Common retro resolutions are 256x224, 320x224(or 240), and 384x224.

If a resolution is 256 pixels across then a 300 TV line CRT will be be able to fully resolve all 256 different pixels in a line from one another from the left to right (don't worry about vertical resolution, that's different).

This is not true, and not even that related to TV lines since it has more to do with interlacing and the vertical resolution. Old consoles drew the same two fields on top of each other during each refresh cycle, instead of interlacing them together. No lines are "missing".

Best example I can point to about this is actually in the real of HDTVs. The famous Sony KD-34XBR960 with a Super Fine Pitch screen can still only resolve 1400 lines of resolution, even though it is an HDTV and supports 1920x1080i resolution. (the cheaper HS-420 units without SFP tube could only resolve 900 lines).

500 lines is plenty until you go over that number of pixels in a row. 640x480 on such a screen wouldn't be making the most of that resolution.

If you play CPS2 games on a REALLY old television or monitor with less than 384 TV lines then you would actually be losing some visible details.

With this increased TVL count comes electron guns which are able to focus tighter and tighter to make use of said increased line count, which leads to the extremely thick scanlines that 800TVL+ PVMs and BVMs are known for.

As you go up in TV lines you will get an image where each pixel starts to become more defined into an actual square or rectangle. Some people love this effect, personally I hate it. I look for CRTs that have just enough TV lines to resolve everything, and no more. This gives a softness and "fullness" to the image without sacrificing any actual details.

If you can get it at a good price, I see no problem at all with using a PVM(Sony or otherwise) that maxes out at S-Video. They still produce a great picture, and if you don't have any need for going larger than 20'' or so, it's a really safe bet on getting a quality set.

Getting something that's RGB capable and not using it for such is absolutely a waste though.

I will say people using RGB monitors and only using composite are being purposefully stupid though; You can get a nice picture from composite if you've got a set with a nice comb filter, and professional monitors don't bring that to the party by design. PVMs can get you a nice picture from a (already decent quality) composite signal, but upper end consumer stuff is designed explicitly to make it look good.

The $40 asking price is pretty good for that model, and so long as it's not completely destroyed, it'd be a quite nice little set to mess around with.

That's not quite what I was suggesting.

The N5 and N6 both use the same exact case and same exact PCB inside. The difference is that the N5 doesn't have all the parts installed in it that would make it an N6. If you are feeling handy and can do some electronics work, you can order the missing components and simply install them yourself. From there, you just remove a certain resistor and the monitor thinks that it's an N6 and for what it's worth, at that point it essentially is.

Hi, /crt/. It's the fixer-upper Anon again. I decided to test the RGB input before sending in my 1351Q in for repairs tomorrow so I could give the technicians a rundown of what was going on, and much to my astonishment it actually produces a picture in component mode beyond what the eBay listing said.

That said, while testing with my Wii U, I ran into a strange resolution issue involving 16:9 and 4:3 inverting resolutions with the Wii RGB cables I was using. I was able to reproduce the same effect with a 8042Q I also have lying around. Has anyone else had something similar occur to them with Wii component cables? If so, what wound up being the culprit?

Setting it to 16:9 assumes it's either being fed to a 16:9 screen or something with vertical compression to letterbox the raster. If you feed this to a 4:3 screen and don't make use of said compression, you get a fullscreen picture that looks too thin/squashed.

Setting it to 4:3 bakes in the letterboxing since it assumes the set doesn't have a 16:9 toggle (said vertical compression) so that the menus and such are displayed in the proper aspect ration. This also cuts the effective vertical resolution for 16:9 content to ~360px rather than the 480 (both interlaced) that it would normally have.

What you'd preferably want to do is select 16:9 from the Wii U, and then press the 16:9 button on the monitor. This will give you the correct aspect ratio, but without the loss in vertical resolution.

Load up the vWii and mess around with aspect ratio settings in there. 16:9 should give you the same effect as with the Wii U, but setting it to 4:3 should give you a proper full screen picture. Or at least I believe it should work like that; I haven't messed with vWii in a while, and it may piggyback off the aspect ratio set in the Wii U portion, and require you to set 4:3 there in order to get fullscreen from it.

So I have an old arcade monitor. It's rigged in some mame travesty cabinet but still has the jamma connector. How does one go about hooking a console that outputs RGB to the arcade monitor? I'm not all that concerned about the controller, I just literally want to hook up my console to my arcade monitor. I've already bought into the pvmeme and such, so all my stuff is either rbg over scart or bnc.

Is there any kind of standard for the signal voltage from jamma PCBs? Will I need a video amp, or can I basically plug it in? I don't really need spoonfed, but I'm hoping someone has done something similar or has a site that talks about it. All I'm finding are old shit from <2004 where people don't even understand that consoles can output rgb and argue the rest of the thread about that.

My grandmother has a 29" Phillips CRT television she's had in her living room for about a decade now. I've always coveted that damned TV.

It's an aperture grille design. It supports component input. It's not an HDTV.

It's 29". One of the very best, if not -the- best sizes for a CRT, and the most common size you'll find in Japanese candy cabs.

I have offered to give her a new HDTV in exchange for it. But she refuses "I don't need another TV" and "I don't care about HD" is her reasoning. Then she will say she barely watches TV anyway.

Meanwhile I am shitting it up with composite video.

Anybody have a recommendation for a universal remote that would get into Panasonic, JVC, Sharp CRT service menus?

I have remotes for my Sony and Sharp and a few other tvs, but the other Sharp and JVC and Panasonics I don't. They mostly need rotation to their picture.

They aren't as common for sure, but craigslist and facebook marketplace has them. You might have to wait a few weeks to get one with component, but they do exist. If you don't get one now, imagine how much harder they will be to get in a couple more years.

Hell, put an add in a local newspaper. Old people still read the paper, they may give you one or sell it super cheap. Remember, crts are "junk" to most people now, older people either don't want to or can't physically move them. They may be very happy to have you haul off their junk.

Finding them with component is getting harder and harder. I will buy every one I can with "DVD" hookups. 2000-2004 models seem to have component connections, and they were never mass produced. My samsung is a 20" and has everything needed. Component, composite and Svideo. It looks great, and I don't know much about the grill inside of it. Its a tx-r2035. Prices on craigslist are going up. You can make a few bucks buying a nice one and reselling it if it doesn't suit your needs. I sold a shitty emerson last year for $60 profit just because it had flat glass front and svideo. It had a really good picture, and was in great shape. Having the remote really adds to values for resale.

I also have a Gateway GP6 400 that still runs Win95 decently(out of view). That is gonna be my emulator machine, even after gutting it with new components.

I've recently come to the conclusion that a decent big consumer CRT is the way to go for retro gaming. I have a few PVMs but mainly used a 20 inch Sony. Went out hunting for a bigger CRT to use when playing light gun and fighting games when I had friends over since it was silly playing light gun games on a tiny screen. Found a 36 inch 480i Sony XBR flat screen with component inputs for free locally. After using it for light gun and fighting games I have since unhooked the PVM and moved the consumer set at my main TV. Outside of some geometry warping because of the flat screen (think I can get it better after I replace the caps) it looks great. Not going to say it's sharper then the PVM but the colors are the same for sure. Even on S video, from like 6 feet away on my sofa looks great. If I didn't already have 700 bucks into scart wires and switches i'd just go S video on everything and be happy. Anyone got some model numbers of 480i curved sets with component inputs? I know Sony made a few like that.

For anyone interested I found a seller on eBay named coretek10 selling 9 inch ikegami bvm's for just over $60 total. Mine came in yesterday and it's in fantastic condition and I'm very pleased with how it looks despite the size

Windowed mode is underrated. On a 21" PC monitor set to 640x480 the size of a a native 320x240 image is 14". Stick that right in the center of the screen and you've got extremely good convergence and geometry.

At this point, if you really don't know, Scart should be in your mind as comparable to component (ypbpr) except component can go to far higher resolutions and was used far more recently.

Scart is a single port connector that can do audio and several video formats. It is best used by people in the US to connect to a scaler or scanline converter or similar to give you RGB quality connections without modifying. Since plenty of consoles support RGB scart with NO modification or a very small one.

Your best bet now is to invest in those hdretrovision cables for systems that support it. Then modify any other consoles to support ypbpr as well. I promise for as good as RGB scart looks, component is just as good and far more usable with less money/time invested as a US boy.

99% of the codes you need will already be accessible via the my harmony system.

For the remaining seriously obscure stuff you can upload hex and Philips Pronto codes to Logitech and get them added that way. I needed to do that for certain Extron equipment and making a facsimile service remote for my Pioneer Kuro plasma.

Not exactly a bad thing. Just that comparative to my pro crts over RGB they look off for older systems.

I try to use the highest resolution a monitor supports and still has a stable, clean image with (some CRTs can hit 2048x1536, but it looks a bit dark and blurry, stick to 1600x1200 in that case). My logic to using high resolution is the higher the resolution the less the real scanlines generated by the CRT are apparent in the image, and therefore will not interfere with the presentation of software scanlines.

I am also not too up on the manner in which shaders are generated by the GPU, but I believe higher resolution should allow a more convincing set of special effects such as added phosphor glow if you choose to go that route.
