Well, one is a properly designed and fleshed out location, and the other is a hastily assembled proof of concept mock-up that is just a blurry floor texture and some simple gravestone models plus a prototype Poe model. It does have atmosphere in its simplicity, though.

People would probably pick the left one because it appeals to nostalgia and a sense of mystery that provokes the imagination, like the prototype forest screenshots or this one. There probably isn't anything there, but it evokes the feeling of a whole wide exciting world just out of your reach.

Well I'd sell the right one definitely more, the left looks so barren, but the unfinished low poly look has its charm, it's also the dark gloomy look, it looks more mysterious, you just want to explore those simple unfinished beta worlds and see what you might find...

Waiting for Mario 64 and seeing pics on magazines is one of the most memorable things for me regarding beta and prototypes.
I remember in a Club Nintendo magazine they said the door behind Mario (on the pic bottom-right) was a Bowser trap, but I think in the final game that door just leads you somewhere else. Still that room looks different on the prototype.

The terrain model is pretty much the same with slopes and everything. But I think it used to be in the middle of Hyrule, not after Kakriko village.

You wouldn't find the Shadow Temple behind it...

The original Shadow Temple used to be the Bottom of the Well.

And most of the Shadow Temple dungeon was actually the Wind Temple, so I guess the Wind Medallion power was that floating thing that was transformed into the Floating Boots...

The Wind Temple is actually wind themed.

The Shadow Temple is actually wind themed.*

I guess they bring this concept back at BotW...

Because Lost Woods has a wind theme into it... the mysterious wind creating illusions and stuff.

That's pretty much what part of the Shadow Temple is about...

Everything was swapped, we'll never know how the game originally played.

There's a video showing the insides of that door, and it's not anything trap related, just a regular hallway which I think was the same as OP.

I feel this so much, news on N64 and even early Gamecube material had such a weird feeling to it, and I didn't really know what to expect from the games even after seeing all the screenshots.

With youtube trailers and all that it feels like the mystique is gone, not to mention that developers, and Nintendo especially, tend to show off only things that are in the final game ( the exceptions probably being Zelda, what with that Wii U tech demo, and the first traielr for BOTW supposedly being actual gameplay footage..bullshit )

It's pretty cool, but I think the original order was like this:

There was no Young Link...

There was no Forest Temple neither...

I think it used to be like that:
1- Link starts at Hyrule Town. (that's how it was supposed to be).

2- He had a friend in the city, could be Saria or other NPC, we used the Ocarina to talk telepathically with this friend. This friend would guide us through the game. (Note how Saria's song is useless in the game, it was the original Ocarina's purpose).

3- We'd gather the three spirit stones.

4- The first three dungeons used to be different.

5- Deku Tree was supposed to be the first dungeon from Zelda 1, not an alive being.

6- Dodongo's cavern used to be Turtle Rock. (check beta images)

7- Jabu Jabu wasn't a dungeon at all, he'd transport us to Zora's place. But I don't what it was supposed to be instead. But I think the cavern used to be dungeon. Something like the Zelda TP Water Dungeon.

8- We'd find the Master Sword in the Lost Woods, it was in after the stairway that leads to the Forest Temple, leading to the Temple of the Light chamber. (note that the Temple of Light was added later, the translation reflects it, it should be called Light Temple)

9- Shields were breakable, that's why it had a number by its side, that was its durability. (check beta images)

10- The first temple could be the fire one, you'd get the Din's fire power using the fire medallion alone and the Fire Arrows combined with the bow.

11- You'd go to the Ice Temple, melting its ice with the Din's fire. The Ice Power was the Ice Arrows and the Song of Storms. The Ice medallion was transformed into a song. It used to be the Ice Cavern, but was later changed into the Water Temple.

12- You'd go to the Spirit Temple by filling the oasis next to it with the the power of the Ice Medallion.

14- I think that Kaepora Gaebora used to be responsible to take you to the Wind Temple, not sure how you'd trigger the event, but it was probably by using the Spirit Medallion, by controlling the owl. It was something like the canon of Zelda TP. There's an actor for a Spirit Arrow.

13- You'd open the Shadow Temple by using the Wind Medallion inside the windmill. The wind power was the floating boots, there's an actor on the code for Wind Arrows.

14- The Shadow Temple was overhauled, they transformed the Wind Temple into it. The original Shadow temple was the Bottom of the Well. The medallion would turn things into night.

15- And finally, you'd use the power of the Shadow medallion to open the Light Temple. The medallion would turn things into day. It'd be used in the puzzle rooms where light was needned, like the mirror's room, and the rooms with the sleeping sun thing.

16- I think there was also an Earth Temple, but it was scrapped, they started its delevopment, it used to be the Gerudo's Training grounds. There's a beta image with of this area with a map and a compass. I supposed that the Medallion power was an earthquake, the arrow power could be something with explosion capabilities.

17- After Miyamoto had entered in the project, Goron's city and Gerudo's town were created...

18- Young Link was supposed to visit Gerudo town and use the Slingshot to knockout the Gerudo... it wasn't supposed to be done with adult Link. That's why we can't kill the Gerudos with the Bow.

19- You could paint your clothes with a variety of colors, once you had the medallion power within you, you could access cold/hot areas without problem. That's why the text says the sage power was "added into him".

20- I also think that the Iron Boots power could be related with the "Earth Medallion", that's why link sink into water.

21- You'd only find weapons inside the big treasure chests... the Deku stick probably used to function like the TWW Deku Stick, you couldn't load it from the inventory.

Also, most of the problematic/convoluted areas for someone to advance in the game came from this overhaul, like the bombing the rolling Goron so you can get the Goron's Tunic or giving a fish to Jabu Jabu so you could enter inside his belly...

Also, the Shadow Medallion ability could be the "Lens of Truth" ability.

That's interesting, that would make sense for TP being OoT Ura...

But they went on and tried to create the "golden land" thing, it didn't work and it became the Twili World...

And there's also the wolf thing...

I guess they tried to make it different, but just broke the game.

Maybe, originally, OoT wasn't about Time Travel, but about traveling to the Golden Land, Like Zelda III.

Also, it'd connect to Zelda III better, because there'd be 7 sages, that would tie in with the 7 Zelda II towns that have the name of the OoT sages, and also would tie with the 7 sages descendants from Zelda III.

And not only that, but the school of magic would be perfect with Fire/Ice, Light/Dark, Wind/Earth and Spirit, that's the junction of all elements.

Doesn't Aonuma always say that every Zelda game that had cut content had its cut content recycled for some newer entry? Do you feel that's a lazy excuse or do they genuinely take entire unused dungeon layouts and copypaste them into newer entries? It's understandable that they would use "concepts from previous entries" but there's a difference between "if we add all of the cut content to the older zelda, we get a sky palace and some other shit that we've done already" to "if we add all of said content, you're going to end up literally with a low poly arbiter's grounds"

I think they reused it, but the dungeons were never 100% completed.

TWW is missing at least 4 dungeons...

The dungeon that you get the third pearl, in game it's explained that Ganondorf has destroyed the island and froze the world in night (it's really, really badly explained) and then you find the bombs inside Tetra's ship.

I also really believe that there should be a Ghost Ship dungeon, that's where you'd find the Skull Hammer. It's so cool the way you find the Ghost ship... but in the end it has nothing but a Triforce shard... amd also there's a Ghost Ship in Phantom Hourglass.

And then there's the Ice and Volcano island with their own assets and stuff...

Originally you were supposed to revisit Hyrule, I guess that's true, I do think that we'd be able to beat all the original dungeons and stuff. So we'd be able to complete the original "school of magic" system, which would now include the excluded Earth and Wind dungeons from OoT.

The Dragonite from Pokémon Green has an "snake like" design, just like the concept art Dragonair.

Dragonair "ears" is transformed into the Dragonite Wings... it fits.

But they didn't follow the original concept and broke it.

But yeah, I do think that, at up until mid development, there was no concept of evolution.

Each version would have a "strong rare pokémon" that ressembled a weaker version of it. Or they'd have counterparts...

But a lot of designs are like that, Haunter is much more "gassy" on the Green version the he is on american Red/Blue...

The artist kind of ruined some of Pokémon designs.

Personally more than scraps I would definitely like to have a third game in the "zelda 64 series" or whatever you want to call it. Already when I was a kid playing OoT I wanted more content, more dungeons and more shit overall. The Ura Zelda announcement on some weird magazine I used to buy at that time that used to report on japanese upcoming titles made me real excited. To be honest, while it wasn't what I expected, Majora's Mask ended being up probably my favorite zelda anyways.

I saw videos of different romhacks that tried to reimagine what was the extra content or the early betas, but with so much time and dedication put into those, isn't there any decent OoT or MM romhack out there?

Don't get me wrong, I agree that there are certainly people out there who love this kind of thing, but is it enough of a market for Nintendo to find it worth going through the effort of gathering a sufficient number of old builds, packaging them up in a marketable form, and selling them for profit? My feeling would be perhaps not, but I could certainly be wrong (and happily so).

Do we have any instances of companies actually doing this kind of thing? Who knows, it's all rumors. The thing is that Nintendo is supposedly always developing some zelda (apparently they start development of a new zelda right before one is out) and now they have more people dedicated to it.

Call me old fashioned or something, but I would want some new 2D or 3D zelda that is not like BoTW. It's an excellent game in my opinion, but I always find joy in being able to 100% a Zelda game and I'm never good at doing that with a game that has a similar amount of content to something made by Bethesda. I always considered Zelda games to be basic adventures and not this thing where you craft shit and activate towers. ALBW is decent, but I'd like them to experiment more in a different direction.

Nice, unused Zelda stuff discussion.

Aonuma initially said TWW would have the most dungeons in the series so far (lol). Hyrule Historia indeed has quite a lot of island concepts (some repurposed for PH)
Most interestingly is a fisherman concept that would warp Link between Old Hyrule and the Great Sea surface. Old Hyrule has far more expansive geometry and detail than needed, some entrance polys in the distances in mountains and the castle, a river zone and an ice zone obscured. I'm betting the triforce quest was originally 8 dungeons in Old Hyrule instead of mandatory sidequests.

>3 dungeons (2 in final, Jabu scrapped)
>tower of gods
>hyrule castle
>at least 4 elemental dungeons (2 in final + 2 singleroom dungeons and 2 dead sages and some rooms in ToG with a doll partner)
>hyrule castle (more of the dungeon)
>8 dungeons in old hyrule
>ganon's lair
>more stealth minidungeons
>more town islands

If you look at the number of dungeons in TP made in the same engine it's not far fetched.
PH was a dumping ground for ideas removed from FSA and TWW.
ST had some of PH ideas, but still has content removed of its own, like a darkness realm and dungeon. Concept art in Hyrule Historia and some files in the games confirm that, and the 30-floor dungeon has some dark rooms in the top levels unlike everything else in the game - which were interestingly made optional in the Japanese version to simplify progression because the producers didn't think those belonged.

Flagship's handheld Zeldas were gutted too. An entire third game cut, instead consolidating some of the already made work as two games, and Minish Cap was considerably simplified.

If Grezzo is indeed doing the next Zelda, 3D or otherwise, i'm sure it will be smaller in scale than BOTW with a more reasonable task for compleltionists.

In any case, i'm sure we'll be getting another 2D game before the next big Nintendo developed 3D game.

Oh yeah. 2D zeldas won't die, perhaps 2D graphics on Zelda, but the perspective will still be there. I don't think Nintendo is even done with the Super Marios with 2D perspective, despite putting out mario maker.

Honestly I didn't even expect Nintendo to re-release Majora's Mask and not only did they do that, they didn't just plain release a port, they actually changed quite a few things about the game (though I would say, they did definitely fuck up a few aspects and could have improved on some tedious shit that the original had).

I do want something similar to any 3D zelda between OoT and TP.

>>4709605
Hey, I understand the hate for the DS releases a bit, maybe because of the controls (which I could never get used to), but still it's not like everytime Nintendo tries something new they fuck it up. Perhaps Triforce Heroes recently, but that's it.

Yeah, that would make more sense.

Man, I wish Aonuma would have kept making those games instead of slowly transforming Zelda into the same sort of linear text heavy puzzle game. It looks like that might be a thing of the past now, but if he got that shit out of his system by making Marvelous games on the side, we wouldn't have had such a dark age of Zelda games between 2003 and 2013.

It makes sense, the Ice Island and the Volcano Island could've been the Ice Temple and the Fire Temple. That would make sense.

I'm pretty sure that the Phantom Ship was a dungeon too... or at least a mini dungeon. I really, really think that you'd recue your sister and the kidnapped girls on that dungeon, because the Phantom Hourglass Ghost Ship dungeon has the same concept...

But then you find the girls in the Forsaken Outpost.

Sadly I think the last really completed Zelda game was Zelda III and IV...

It's sad that they opted for the chaotic development environment, thanks to that we'll never a complete Zelda game again.

Speaking of Marvelous, it never released properly.
It was originally a SNES CD first party with 11 minutes of TMS animated goodness and lots of voice acting.
Some of its content ended up released 4 years later scattered on three different releases (1 SNES and 2 Satellaview) and Aonuma said he wanted to remaster it on the N64 in original form and... yeah. By then Nintendo hated 2D and he was recruited for OoT.
Now he just reminisces about it wistfully in interviews.

>ALBW used to be a Z3 remake too.
That one is pretty evident from the map.
ALBW even has incomplete files for a full layout port of Zora River.

Zelda 3 was in turn a reboot of the original game. Even has meat and stop-clocks in the code.

They eventually hired a bunch of novices to remake Zelda 1 for the Satellaview... and probably Zelda 2 (considering hints of its existence in test cartridges and prerelease screens in 1988 showing off how the super famicom could do more colors and have KANJI!! in text)

There's speculation OoT is heavily inspired by Zelda 3, considering the dungeon themes. Some speculate also about two medallions plus the light sanctuary, and a dungeon whose rehash in the final dungeon doesn't match its current elemental theme.
That's not even getting into the myriads of alternate events still in the game (like Gerudos kicking out CHILD Link) and the content that would have been programmed for the 64DD including golden variants of enemies (the idea was used in the oracle games) as Ura, but by 2000 Nintendo stopped all N64 development and cobbled whatever they did on Ura as a literal dungeon romhack as Master Quest.

Majora's Mask was supposed to span more than 3 days but similarly I don't think that they did that much progress on it. It's pretty good for a game developed in one year.

Yeah, but that's every game. As a game is finished loose ends are bound to be left... loose.

I've never heard of this. I know Aonuma said something similar about Twilight Princess but still not necessarily golden. Though I know they were in The Minish Cap from this same time.

TP cut the magic meter, the fire arrows, some dungeons have more geometry than accessible that's blocked off by rubble. Lots of interiors cut. It's still a marvel they could fully realize TWW's vision and still fit within the GC disk (barely).

Skyward Sword has some hints Nintendo was thinking about more Mole Mania games even that much years later. I didn't find juicy stuff about it. Amusingly, Fi's text is in its separate text blob after four text blobs for each major zone, and it's BIGGER.

BoTW has the hookshot (some animations still there), different way to get/lose the master sword, filler shrines, modeled but buggy Agate Mt., message for maxed out hearts that can't appear since there are yet 12 more shrines/3 more heart containers required, you could get stamina containers out in the loose, and discarded ideas for themed elemental items/dungeons all over the place, and of course various impossible situations.
Regarding the story, it was cut down to prioritize gameplay, so planned more detailed tellings of how Hyrule fell, specifically how King Harkenian died, and the secret of the Sheikas infatuation with banana-shaped things. Nintendo also avoided showing the game off early on because they significantly downgraded it, but some screens with the nifty effects still leaked. That was probably to salvage the Wii U version. In turn, a lot of features relying on the WiiU pad thing were trimmed to not make the switch version inferior.

OoT is a special case in that it was designed for possible future expansions so the engine had to accomodate alternate event flags that come with the new content.
It's like how dataminers find shiny Pokemons and hidden distribution events before they happen, except OoT's expansion never happened in its intended form as Nintendo abandoned the 64DD idea entirely by MM.

Advance Wars 64 too.

Intelligent Systems struggled with 3D on N64 because of how obtuse it was to work with and how unsupportive Nintendo was, so they developed on the Super Famicom instead, and the original director still had the time to publish the last FE in 2000, resign, develop a new game from scratch for the PS1 and release it by 2001, much to Nintendo's ire.

Some say it met the fate of Far East of Eden 64DD and Mother 64 and released on the GBA as Fire Emblem Sword of Seals but who knows.

>Just like I think you're speculating about golden enemies.
That supposedly came from a Miyamoto interview about OoT and the potential of the 64DD. Some of the datamining done so far on the dangling 64DD compatibility left within OoT supports that additional enemy variation and NPC events, not just very limited dungeon layout variations, could have been done.

As for whether all of that made it past concept and prototype phase, that's a different matter. I personally don't think so. Just Master Quest's files are labeled 64dd in the 3DS remake so that might be the extent of what they *implemented*. It's still a fact they cut short N64 developemnt around 2000 and focused on TWW.

I've played the reconstructed Zelda 1 Sattleview, it's pretty cool, I like it much more than the original one.

About OoT... I agree with everything, specially with the sages thing sealing Ganon.

Yes, the Forest/Wind themed room in the Ganon Tower doesn't make sense.

Also each puzzle in Ganon's Tower seems... primitive or out of place, just like the Bottom of the Well and the Fire Temple. It's hard to describe, but it feels there's something missing, you know?

That's weird. I definitely remember reviewers and people bashing star fox zero for the bare bones graphics in particular.

For OoT 3DS you still see 3D Unity HD fan remakes trending everywhere and graphic whores raving how that should be the way the remake should have been, and that the 3DS should die so that further remakes will magically be like that.
Bringing back N64/early PS2 assets? Haha no way. Even for Zelda models when they needed them for new games on 3DS (Brawl, Musou, etc) the poly count was GC era tier. 5th gen early low poly 3D nostalgia is still a contentious subject nowadays, even the indies who want to jump on the bandwagon of retraux nostalgias find out the hard way audiences tolerate low effort art in that style less than pixel art.
