4696767 No.4696767 [Reply] [Original]

Iv'e been replaying this recently and I forgot how much better it was in comparison to OOT. The overworld isn't as boring as OOT's is and the boss's are actually challenging. Although i'd say that OOT's music was a lot better.

Probably one of my favorite games on the SNES, also is the GBA port worth playing? what did it change?

>> No.4696791

>>4696767

It's got an extra dungeon and mini sidequest that lets you get the Hurricane Spin from Wind Waker. The extra dungeon's decently fun/challenging.

Aside from giving Link a voice and the slightly changed title screen, there's nothing different other than the inclusion of Four Swords.

You have to play through both ALttP and Four Swords to earn the Palace of the Four Sword, so if you want, I can upload my save file for you on an emulator.

late-era 2D games are usually better than their early 3D counterparts, at least as long as the 3D doesn't completely mean they have to revamp the whole concept, like with platformers.
I'm particularly familiar with this thru some RTS/Tycoon games, like Age of Empires, Command and Conquer or Rollercoaster Tycoon. All of those franchises took a dip when they switched over to 3D.
A new technology isn't initially as familiar to devs as one that has been perfected over many years. So the first try will inevitably mean some experimentation and the eventual need for tweaking it to get it right. Like Majora's Mask already improved over some of OoTs weaknesses.
This is the same thinking that nintendo exploited to make the GameBoy a success: lateral thinking with withered technology. Take a technology that isn't the latest new thing, and instead use one that you are familiar with, that doesn't require as many resources, and which will let you focus on game design.

>> No.4697146

>>4697142
(cont'd)
the thing is, the innovation value of that technology isn't preserved over time. When we first got OoT it was mind-blowing because we'd never seen something like that. The innovation value was through the roof. However, 20 years later, the innovation value is a novelty at best, and obv adds nothing to the gameplay. The game has "aged", because it lost that innovation value, which LTTP didn't have in the first place, it was just the same basic concept as LoZ, just better in every way. The game doesn't "age" that much.
You have to understand these things also with their historical context. It doesn't make the game better, pair say, but it's important to understand how groundbreaking it was. You can't always just rely on lateral thinking and let others do the actual innovating.
For example, it's silly to judge an early sound or color film to present day standards, instead one must see them also within their historic context and the much more limited capabilities of the time.

I would say OOT and ALTTP are two different beasts.

ALTTP:
-Is fast paced
-Has a more simplistic story
-Isn't cinematic at all
-Suffers more from repetition, specially with later dungeons
-Has a basic control scheme
-Is a bit more open

OOT:
-Is slow paced
-Has better developed characters
-It's quite cinematic, every boss seems more intimidating (not harder, though)
-It's just a bit darker
-Each dungeon is somewhat memorable
-Attempts to have not so basic combat
-It's quite linear, though it does have many little things and secrets that don't just amount to bombing walls

Both are pretty good. I don't get this thing where you have to make one better than the other when they do have their differences. Hell I would say that except for TP, every newer zelda was unique in its own way.

I get what you're saying but I think in general ALTTP did a lot of things better and people like to be contrarian about it but I think Egoraptors video on OOT summed it up perfectly. I used to prefer OOT over ALTTP until I watched that video and it convinced me otherwise.

Objectively speaking not, but I personally prefer the original monochrome aesthetic, the colored version is nice, but at places I though colors clashed too much with each other. This is probably nostalgia, but I genuinely feel the monochrome is "the way it was intended", and I think it looks better, especially on a Super Game Boy.
Original also has a glitch that allows you to teleport to different parts of the map at will, probably making it the preferred version for speedruns and shit. Or just to fuck around and have fun.
Lastly, some stuff was changed in the dungeons, nothing big but on the original there were stone pieces you had to collect to read hints about what to do in the dungeon, since sometimes puzzles are a bit cryptic, but on DX they removed the collecting part and I think it just gives you a hint right away, so basically it's made easier.
DX on the other hand added a new dungeon (which I've heard it's not that great, but hey, it's more), another powerup that basically puts you in god-mode, and the pictures which you can print on the GB Printer, this is probably the coolest part.

>> No.4697919

Is there like a mod out there or something that makes ALTTP a boss rush mode? it be cool to set the amount of hearts you have, your weapon, and items and just take on all the boss's.

This is not true. DX version requires you to collect the owl beaks for the hint same as the original. I just played through DX about a month ago so I remember.

Just catch a fairy with the net and store it in a bottle. It resurrects you if you die and you can store like 3-4 if I remember correctly. Makes it impossible to lose. There are fairy ponds all over the map too so it's not hard to replenish them.

It costs some rupees (not really a big deal though) but more importantly it only triggers if you use it. Fairies will only pop if you die so you can potentially clutch on low hearts and not have to use the fairies.

I usually filled all my bottles with fairies except for one which I filled with the potion that restores both hp+magic.

It's not a death count. It's a "games played" count that counts both deaths and save & quits. If you want a 000 you have to beat it both deathless and in one sitting.

It's either before or after the credits, I don't remember which. But yeah, it scrolls up with the names of the dungeons and the number of deaths, with the total at the end, and then the total is displayed on your file.

I'm pretty sad they stopped giving you a death count, playing the game with as few deaths as possible was alwlays fun.. though it'd be a breeze in most of the 3D games.
