This is honest to god a video game I programmed into my Super Nintendo Entertainment system on the reboot it would play unless I inserted another cartridge it always played this game instead. If you ever play one of my consoles I always boot in one of these easter eggs as a clever way to make all of my consoles have more worth like they say that it is Nintendo's mistake teehee and sell at the store for 600 or so. I make a major wealth all through the years as a programmer. Well if you shut up for a second I could tell you how. So shut up now and just be quiet. It doesn't matter what you say I never played this game unless you really ask me about it so will you keep asking? WILL YOU KEEP ASKING???

I have the same feeling about the first one, it's very by the book, even for a JRPG. In case you want to give it a try, BoF II spices things a bit with the shamans and village.

3 has a more limited team, but "masters" scattered around the world that teaches your chars new skills and affect stat growth, a cool make-you-own-dragon system with genes for Ryu and a neat fishing minigame. Otherwise, the story feels very drawn-out with poor pacing.

Haven't played 4 yet but it looks better than the third.

Finally, leaving /vr/ territory but I loved Dragon Quarter. It's a truly unique -yet weird- game and I was impressed the BoF series would get this audacious.

4 is a very interesting twist on 3. It's a much more unique world built on Asian cultures instead of European fantasy medieval, trades formation bonuses for a combo system that adds a small percentage of a previous action affect the next, like casting an ATK up spell followed by a DEF up spell will cause the latter to give a little extra ATK up as well, and a whole bunch of weird mini-games you can repeat to up your score because score is actually tied to upgrading your dragon forms

I would rent BoF1 from the video store over and over as a kid. Never beat it. I got 3 when it came out on PSX and it remains one of my fondest memories. Much later I ended up getting 2 for GBA, which I didn't enjoy. I haven't had a JRPG itch in a long while but I'd like to go back and finish 1.

I really like BoF1, but I spam the shit out of MRBL3 to avoid encounters. Really sad they couldn’t make another chill RPG where you manage a village, go fishing, hang out with furries, and turn in to a dragon. Formula seems really simple.

Introduced to this series years ago through my brother, who spent literal hours trying to beat Bario and Sunder in BoF3. I don't think I've beaten any, though I fondly look back on BoFIV with its atmosphere of.. well, apocalypse, end of the world, quiet ambience and balance between Fou-Lu and Ryu. Great party members too, neat little story.

I've been recently feeling a dungeon crawler thirst, should I check out Dragon's Quarter? Real sad Capcom is doing nothing for the 25th Anniversary (like they did nothing for RE2's 20th) but they're still plenty enjoyable.

as a dungeon crawler on consoles its pretty good. Depending on how much you like the lore of BoF you might enjoy what it adds or not, but thats up to you.
The actual mechanics are great. Every encounter can wipe you if you let it, the traps and aoe system is great for the space the fights take place in, the d-counter stuff really isn't the hinderance people think it is (feel free to 100% willy nilly once just to see how much freedom they give you in the long run), you have to have tokens to save even a la resident evil with the ribbons, the party xp and safe system make the dungeon crawl feel almost roguelike at times.
Outside of gameplay elements, the artstyle is beautiful if creepy, and the singular goal of going up is always punctuated with something unique that you'll find.

It's a bit of a thing, that. See when people tell you the SNES translation is bad? They ain't whistling Dixie. It's bad. REALLY BAD. That said Id almost recommend playing just to see how bad it is.

Now as for the patch? That's another kettle of fish. It's better grammatically, and it adds some nice quality of life improvements. But to be blunt it's not written terribly well either and frankly comes off as fanficy at times. The new script has a lot of inconsistencies and, while a minor issue, renaming Katt to Lin bugs the crap out of me. If they went with Rinpoo as is her name in Japan I don't think Id care but this is just glaringly inconsistent with the others getting their Japanese names back.
