I don't know if this is a weird question but what are your favorite (retro of course) mech games in terms of visual design only (so the game itself doesn't need to be good)? Despite the pixel art OP I am not asking about 2D games only.

Front Mission has cool mechs and is also a pretty good game.

Pic related is an awesome game, with a unique gimmick.

MUSHA is another good one, along with Granada(though those mechs are more tank-likes), and Metal Warriors(which should go without question).

A surprisingly good game. Getting to control the crew of the mech and being able to salvage enemy mech parts and use them immediately or research them for tech-stealing was sweet in 2001 and is still sweet today.

I would recommend it. It really is a fun little shooter romp, and not that difficult overall. The last boss is a right BITCH, though...

Another great mech game is Gundam Side Story 0079: Rise from the Ashes. The marketing on the case was not wrong...it IS tense to stare right into the mono-eye of a Zaku as you lock blades.

I remember back in 1998, Omega Boost stole the show at the Tokyo Game Show for the Japanese press, overshadowing the Dreamcast. It was pretty hype with the kids as it combined the mech designs of Kawamori Syozi, of Macross fame, with development by Polyphony Digital, of Gran Tursmo fame. It was impressive graphically and another in the line of great rail shooters like Panzer Dragoon and Starfox, but it faked a sense of freedom in movement very well. I think they unfortunately changed the campyness of its FMVs and music that I loved in the Japanese version when localized to the US. I am surprised no one has mentioned the game yet, as it is more Macross than most Macross games.

I also like Kikaioh or Tech Romancer for using different mechanical designers for each robot or mecha imitations.

Yeap, plots are connected except FM3 is barely mentioned in later games.

I suggest you play FM1 just because its a good game.
After that you can download translation patch for FM2 and play that.
Its a cool game as well and in many aspects better than FM3.
FM3 has cool settings, web full of lore and great artstyle but is casualized in terms of gameplay.

I really liked Front Mission Alternative, too. Those kind of slow real time strategy games are really enjoyable to watch unfold. Wish I was better at them.

It's a game from the Gungriffon series. The first two games came out on the Sega Saturn, but these clips are from a sequel on the PS2 and are thus technically not /vr/ material.

Power D.O.L.L.S., every game but the first hasn't been translated, but the designs are pretty cool. Would like to see some of the later titles get translated, but I'd gladly take 2 or 3.

Maybe you guys can help me.
Way back when I was a kid, so maybe early 90's or late 80's, my dad was a PC gamer and played this mech game that I was never allowed to play.

You hired mech pilots and you yourself had a mech, and I remember some alien guy my dad would 'hire' said he ate humans or something like that (which freaked me the fuck out).

It was pretty crude and early fake 3D stuff I think, and ran very slowly. He could never pass a part where he had to get past a mountain range or something in time but always ended up blowing up.

I've looked at mechwarrior 2 and all those typical things, that one 90's mech game that had animal-like mechs you could switch around to each cockpit and pilot, but I've never found this one.

the full title is HI-MACS simulator, it's a fan game for the Gungriffon series. Which there are two games for the Sega Saturn (IE: retro) if you want to check them out as well.
