Is PSO considered low poly?

>> No.4692763

>>4692483
Yes. There are a lot of DS games that have all of the good parts of low poly with the benefit of years of experience in 3d.

Really the only thing that lets the DS down is resolution on occasion, a lot of games really shine with a higher resolution in emulators wince you couldn't make out their true quality in native res.

Dreamcast games probably at or near the limit considering it came out when the PS1 and N64 were still around and the graphics on the console at the time reflected this however towards the end of its life cycle you had games with graphics that were on par with the PS2. The DC's greatest strength was the ability to render sharper textures than most other consoles at the time.

Never really delved into it, but as far as I can remember I'd say the DC could pull off the geometry complexity of the average PS2 game, but generally couldn't provide the buffer/screen effects that spruced up the latter's (bloom and whatnot) so the games overall looked more crude and less impressive at the time. Also no normal mapping and that kind of stuff

I'm probably catastrophically off, can somebody offer some insight on the actual differences?

The DC wasn't nowhere near the ballpark of the PS2, but it was set up like a traditional cpu + gpu renderer and a very strong one at that. So people could get good performance out of it very easily. Games like Dead or Alive 2 already hit the maximum polygon cap the system can push.

It's gpu also uses a completely different approach to rendering, which made it have an extremely high performance/cost ratio. But doing something it was not meant to do was difficult; and iirc the Sega devkits didn't ever expose low level programming to it. So people couldn't get smart with it. The smartest they ever did was calculating some effect in software and rendering them as polygons - Jet Set Radio for example does cel shading by rendering each object twice, once normally, once as the cartoonish outline around everything. It had to brute force any special effects.

PS2 had a nonstandard cpu/gpu setup (weak cpu, two strong vector compute units, and a broken gpu with little memory that was 16x faster than the competition including Xbox). It realized special effects in the same way as the DC, brute forcing them. However the vector units and the fast gpu meant that it could get away with doing a LOT of this.

The big downside of the PS2 was that it had less video memory and broken hardware AA, so games had to use smaller framebuffers and worse textures than on the DC. Until they figured out that they can use video memory exclusively as framebuffer and transfer over textures as they are drawn, because the system is fast enough to do this. This is why DC games were sharper and had better textures.

Also the DC needed more memory anyway due to a design quirk. The PVR2 gpu needed to have every polygon of a frame uploaded to start rendering, since it used tile based deferred rendering, not traditional framebuffer drawing. I'm not even sure if you could then alter the framebuffer, so no intelligent "pixel shading" and stuff.

>> No.4700242

>>4700239
Later hardware had pixel and vertex shading on the GPU, so you could tell it to modify pixels before they are drawn. So they could do things the PS2 could in hardware, while the PS2 drew things 20+ times if need be to get some effect going. It was inefficient but it was paired with so much bandwidth that it could afford to be inefficient, enough so that it could hold its own vs Gamecube and Xbox.

Dreamcast was nowhere near as strong as the PS2 and it was limited in feature wise, but it was extremely efficient at what it did. This and early PS2 games looking like ass is what made it have such a good reputation.

Mulaka looks like a bunch of random shit some freshman hipster would put together for his graphic design course (I know the story behind the game but that's what it looks like). The lack of textures make the game look bland and boring. Also the charm from low poly comes from how cleverly modeled the world is using as few polygons as possible because of system limitations, just because you modeled a tree that looks flat and ugly with visible polygons doesn't mean it's a low poly good model.

I enjoyed the game a lot mostly because of its mysterious and calm atmosphere. It's a very slow burn so if you're the kind of guy that likes to explore a deserted castles and read books about a ancient lore then you'll enjoy the ride. Most of the puzzles are no brainers except for the dumb sewer puzzle in the mid game that I accidentally brute force my way through. The environment is nicely modeled but the characters look derpy as fuck except for the sorceress which I found hot as a kid.

That's one of the reasons why some people didn't N. Sane Trilogy. The redesigned artstyle and color palette king of gave the game a washed out play-doh and didn't have that quick readability that the original game had with its sharp 3D models. If ever get a chance read the making of article for Crash and you'll realize how much thought and effort had to be put into the look of the game not just on an artistic level but a technical one as well. It's something that I don't think a lot modern developers think about because the technology allows them to afford not to.
