Are there any games on N64 that are just to "dated" to enjoy? For example I want to pick up and finally beat Perfect Dark, but everyone keeps telling me it's to dated to play (framerate, etc.)

>> No.4687212

Who's "everyone"? If those people tell you to eat a dick, will you do it?

*too dated to play

Meh. They're just obsessed with having things look closer to reality and muh frame rates. Fuck 'em. Enjoy a great game.
And not really.

>> No.4687242

The worst thing I've ever read about Perfect Dark on this board is that it's the pinnacle of FPS games and you're just wasting your time if you even attempt to play another FPS game (unless it's on the 64, those are the pinnacle of gaming too).

>> No.4687248

For PD in particular, someone has rigged up a specific emulator for it so you can have mouseaim and 60fps. It's pretty OK, and suddenly you can notice the other problems with it.

Perfect Dark does have framerate issues, but it's otherwise a fantastic game. I'd recommend it.

The 360 rerelease doesn't have the framerate issues, and it allows for more players in multiplayer. Some of the new textures / character models are a little weird (Elvis especially), but otherwise it's the better version of the game. No idea if it's available on XBone.

Also do NOT play Perfect Dark Zero, it sucks.

The Rare Replay version is the X360 one.
I think playing it on the n64 is still fine as long as you change the default controls.

play the 360 version of PD HD, its 60fps, although the art is slightly off

Perfect Dark is great, still a lot of fun to play, but it's hard to get other friends to play it. The only game I've gone back to and felt let down by was Jet Force Gemini. Maybe the controls were always bad, but now they seem REALLY bad.

Get a CRT, a real N64 with a real controller, and enjoy the games as they are. Many N64 games (and other 3D games of 5th gen and before) have sub-30 fps, but the games were designed with that in mind, and most of the times the framerate is constant.
I believe games can be "dated" but still be enjoyed. If they were good back then and enjoyed by people, there's no reason not to enjoy them now just because it isn't 60fps.

You guys know about changing the control scheme to Expert on the options for JFG, right?

>> No.4687621

After playing the 360/Xboone ports, I can't bear to play most Rare games. I could deal with the framerate on Banjo, Tooie and Conker as a kid, but after playing them on Rare Replay where they're literally just the same game but at better framerates with (arguably) better controls, going back to the originals is a direct downgrade.

Can't think of anything else, though.

It is actually the pinnacle of *console* FPS design. People are just trying to protect you from playing garbage like Halo.

Man, that's a shame if that's true for you. My best friend and I went absolute apeshit on the 360 version of the game and beat it all on the highest difficult. God damn is that a hard game. Then we set out to do all the challenges. I think we got into the 30s or something before it got so difficult we finally stopped. Those bots are no fucking joke.

Strafing with horizontal c-buttons, changing items with vertical c-buttons, aiming with Z and being forced to use inverted look is cancer my man.

I always marvel at how life-like they managed to make the models in PD look. I know they basically just took a photo of somebody's face and slapped it on a model, but they are impressively realistic. Mr. Blonde in particular looks really good.

>> No.4688143

>>4687549
The problem with the 360 version is that the high framerate can actually make the game way harder (and also the 360 controller sucks for the game - dem deadzones).

It's a little bit like how slowdown can lend a hand while trying to 1CC a shmup.

You're not using expert controls then. You change weapons with A and B and usa all the C buttons to move in any direction while aiming, also Z is the fire button and you enter aim mode with R

>in case of perfect dark, only the controls suck nowadays
Move with dpad, look with stick, aim with L, use/change weapons with A/B, shoot with Z. Pretty much no different than a modern control scheme. You can even get a raphnet adapter, use a GCN controller and it'll be almost identical.

>> No.4688405

>>4688143
The 360 version blows honestly. Art style is a lot different, they made a lot of the weapons look like shit, the lack of the old magnetic auto aim gives the game a totally different feel and makes it seem loose, they replaced all of the old bot faces with shitty soymale faces, each character no longer has their own unique set of hands, etc. 60fps and the improved textures are nice, but I'd rather just play the original.

>> No.4688417

And often fucked up in the process. Take Banjo-Tooie on 360 for instance. The cutscenes don't have any fucking audio sync and the cute dialogue font of the original is FUCKED beyond belief

I'll take a bit of slowdown for the developers original vision over porting turds.

Here we see a typical brainlet armchair opinion from somebody who isn't even familiar with the library beyond the basics. The vast majority of its best games haven't been ported, and even those that have were pretty much butchered in the process.

It's true in one particular aspect

It's so satisfying to kill dudes in that game because of the sound design and death animations. Now everything is just a blood squirt and rag doll. I love to see them fall on their knees and die like a bitch, their world slipping away by my hand. Actually deserves the M rating and It's probably a good thing no games let you savor violence like that.

I’m not convinced. Satisfying aiming makes for a satisfying shooter. If anything it adds challenge, ie the reverse of RE4 Wii. Auto aim was probably due to having a 240p, resolution, although I haven’t tried the 360 version so don’t know how bad the deadzone is.
