I tried the original sonic on genesis and it's boring as shit and stopped playing in the first 15 minutes, but the 3D ones really got a hang on me.

there's your mistake, sonic 1 isn't a very good game to begin playing sonic with
don't get me wrong, it's still a good game, but it has a much more niche appeal due to its much blockier level design and no easy boosting techniques like spindash

2, 3&k and mania are better entry points, cd is too divisive to be easily recommended either

The Tails levels aren't that bad and the Amy ones are tolerable, though her campaign is way too short. Even E-101's part is worth it for the story, though his levels are clunky.

I really enjoyed Gamma's levels. Fast time attack shooting, kill as much and as quick as you can for a big time bonus. Fun to replay.

I liked the game when I played it as a kid. But I've replayed it recently and noticed all the bugs the game has. Still fun to play just for the pinball mini game in the casino level.
