How come they never took it to 3D?

>> No.4683320

An attempt has been made several times but each time it never gets greenlit or it becomes something else. Fighting Force is the most interesting example.

Because Capcom didn't make a decent Final Fight 3D for them to copy

Because they did something better.

I don't get why they should keep doing SOR over and over again when they can just create a new series.

Still one of the biggest travesties.

I am honestly surprised beat'em ups died when polygons really became a thing.

God hand, Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising. Those games being good or bad is irrelevant. The genre isn't dead.

>> No.4683726

>>4683505
Those are all single player titles though, a big part of beat em ups was co-op play

>> No.4683740

None of those are like Final Fight or Streets of Rage you stupid faggot. That's like saying Mario 3 is like Mario Galaxy or 64.

It really doesn't work in 3D. Something about beating up hordes of enemies in 3D gets really repetitive and boring. It doesn't feel like that in 2D.

pic related was originally meant to be a 3D streets of rage game for the saturn

As for today, Yakuza series is pretty much a 3D streets of rage, with cinematics

This.

You know literally nothing of genres.

Only if you didn't play Devil May Cry 3.

Mario 3 is exactly like 64. 3D beat em ups are exactly like 2D beat em ups. I assume you want something like Crash Bandicoot that is just a 2D game where you walk forwards instead of Sideways.

DMC, MGR etc are all awesome but I'd have loved to have seen more games with God Hand's "tank controls + dodges" setup. It's got that sense of being "in" the action. More first-person brawlers like Breakdown would be cool too.

>> No.4684881

>>4683432
They didn't, they're still being made today. They just evolved into action/adventure hybrid style games like Devil May Cry etc

Yakuza is closer to River City Ransom than it is to Streets of Rage god you're fucking stupid don't ever let me catch you posting on my board again.

Soul Fighter on Dreamcast is like a medieval SoR. Its gets redundant as fuck though

I'd agree with Yakuza being similar, with basically being a blend of that and a JRPG.
Would like to see them expand they gameplay into even more settings and styles if that North Star game takes off.

If it had gone 3d, especially back in the day, it would have been laden with cheese, ugly graphics and bad gameplay gimmicks. Also why i'm glad they never made a sonic game for saturn...

>> No.4690034

How to make Streets of Rage 3D now, and have it be popular in 2018:
>Take the Yakuza Dragon Engine
>Rip out all the RPG bits
>reskin with Axel and Blaze
>get Yuzo Koshiro to do a soundtrack
>sell it for $15 on digital platforms
>sell a $60 limited edition with a vinyl LP soundtrack and an art book
