Is it our fault that Americans hardly used C64s and Amigas even though they were the blokes that created the things?

Oh we did, it's just that our computer gaming was more along these lines

One of my favorite games on C64

Just look at that graphics!

I agree; it's got nice details in there

‘One of the major distinctions between Monty and Willy, is that Monty requires a deal of luck in certain situations, like the crushers. While this might be thought to reduce the playing skill element, it does add one of sheer thrill and nerves. The graphics, design and animation of all the moving characters is excellent, amusing and attractive, and that adds quite a bit to the playability of the game. Whether Monty Mole is better than Manic Miner will have to remain a question of the near future, and more hours playing. I suspect it might be better by a touch; better than Jet Set Willy? I don’t know that either, pretty much as good though.’

Essentially that Might and Magic was a typical US computer game of the time while Giana Sisters was a typical Euro game.

Computer gaming here was/is much more neckbeard than Europe.

>> No.467735

>>467715
Euros didn't really have game consoles in the 80s which is why they did arcade stuff on computers.

I don't know how true that still is in Europe today, although American computer gaming is still pretty much the same (centered on simulations, strategy, RPGs, and adventures)

That sucker was on two disks and MM2 (the C64 version) took three. Britbongs sure wouldn't want to try it on cassette tape.

>> No.467772

>>467761
Many of our 8-bit games were single load, rarely bigger than 64-128k. Tapes aren't much fun but the British market got completely priced out of disk drives.

'Murrican here, the C64 was my first PC. Still got mine at home in the closet.

The VIC-II had a nice pastel color palette. If you did this on a PC of the period with EGA graphics, it would look hideous with those Day-Glo colors.

Sierra was great at pixel art, but even they could only go so far with the EGA/Tandy palette.

The issue isn't specifically the EGA palette. But the EGA palette combined with low resolution. Palette limitations are much easier to deal with when you have larger resolutions.
Using dithering, and combined with a higher resolution, this is what the EGA palette can do.

>> No.474443

Thing is those backgrounds were actually VGA, the game dithered them in real time. That's why they look cool.

Here's the same palette when done at a small resolution. Scaled up for comparison purposes.

I'm getting one of these
But with an SD card interface instead of disk drive, for convenience.
