I dunno, I prefer a standard d-pad like the SNES one, or if I want a different kind of d-pad there's the Saturn/Genesis model 2 one. PS's d-pad always felt weird to me, not terrible, but it prevents the PS' pad from being among my favorites.
As for the R2/L2 buttons on PS3, I agree, I played too much bayonetta (I know, ps3 is worst version, I still platinum'd it), and my R2 became loose as fuck.

I've never liked the Playstation d-pad. It feels mushy and whenever I've extensively played fighting games on it my thumb gets sore sliding around it so much.

But that's just me. I know people who speedrun using things like PS4 controllers in sidescroller games and people who are competitive with the range of Playstation controllers in fighting games.

My fav controller is the Xbone controller. I love that d-pad.

The steam controller can map mouse controls to the gyro. Think like aiming in breath of the wild but for everything. Truly a hybrid between keyboard and mouse and the controller.

I just decided to test both a PSOne Dualshock and a DS4 (V2) with retroarch.

I can consistently do diagonals accurately with the DS4. The PSOne dualshock keeps just not doing it most of the time. I'm not sure if it's because I'm using one of these. I'm not sure about input lag, it feels about the same.

The PS controller is decent for Street Fighter or Gundam Battle Assault type of fighting games.

I'd never use it for a Guilty Gear type which utilizes a half-circle roll a lot. Shit's near-impossible for me, I'd even rate the GameCube d-pad as being more responsive as I have played the Wii version with it.

It's a nightmare using that thing to watch a movie on the PS3, every time you set it down the bottom shoulder buttons touch the surface you lay it on and it rewinds or something. Regarding desyncs: I have an NES30 that after about 10 minutes of usage starts having up to a full second of lag.
The FC30 i own doesn't have that problem so I'd assume the other one has a defect but still, they're definitely not the best ones out there.
