Sega's marketing was silly then, and it's silly now. What Kalinske did good was deciding to bundle Sonic with the Genesis, losing some profit from the game, but getting a lot of traction in system sales.
Teenager-tier advertising doesn't do the trick, games do, especially when they're bundled.
Also, I don't think Kalinske was in Sega anymore by the time N64 came out.

He basically was pushed out for believing in the 32x route. His theory was that it was more important to keep backward compatibility and build on the success of Genesis than to "break out" with a new and complex super system like Saturn. Was he right and a world where the 32x launched along side a stand alone 32xCD "Neptune" and no Saturn existed have given Sega the edge they needed or was he just an egotist too proud of his own success to move forward? We'll never know for sure but what we CAN be sure of is that launching both the 32x AND the Saturn was straight retarded - but Sega gonna Sega.
