While I find PS2 the most aesthetically pleasing game in the series when it comes to designs and music, I realize that it didn’t age that well and can be tiresome to play in this day and age. So you can skip right to PS IV. It is the best in the series and one of the pinnacles of 16-but JRPGs. You won’t miss that much, just occasional references to past games that won’t confuse you.
If you like IV, then play previous games. Especially I that IV is most connected to.

Should I play the Master System version or the Sega Ages PS2 version?

PSI is pretty fine to play on a Master System emulator - look for the options to enable FM sound (I can't remember if it's a patch w/ retranslation or not). The game is leagues better than FF1 with far less in the way of glitches and the like. I haven't played the remake on the PS2 but I hear it's ok as well.

You should. The remake is awful.
This is the translation you want. In addition to being sane English instead of 80's All Your Base gibberish it is based on a version of the game that has FM sound. The FM sound is absolutley worth playing on an emulator for even if you have a real (non-Japanese) MS.

>I just want the version of the game with the least glitches and such.
There are no real bugs to speak of in the original, but the remake is an entirely different game with entirely different mechanics, so it's difficult to compare any gameplay problems they may have but I dislike change for the sake of change so I say the new one is shit and the old one is fine.

Part 2:

When Rhys chose Marina, Lena, her engagement null and void, returned to her home kingdom and married another man, with Lynn as the result. As opposed to her 150-cm [~5'0"] mother, Lynn is 180 cm [~5'11"] - as tall as Ayn. (And even taller than Rhys!) One imagines her father must have been tall. So who was her father, anyway?

Rumor has it that he was none other than Rhys' older brother. It is said that the younger brother stole the right of succession from the elder - because the elder, perhaps, was not the son of the king's wife but instead an illegitimate child.

When the legitimate son abandoned his kingdom, cancelling his engagement to the princess of the neighboring land, Rhys' father (Saiki Sa Riik) made a difficult decision to preserve good relations with his neighbor.

Until now, to keep up appearances, the son had probably been raised in a dungeon. (Saiki seems to have a fondness for throwing his sons in jail.) Since that dungeon was most probably Riik's prison, perhaps Lena, when she came to rescue Rhys, encountered a certain tall and unfortunate man there.

A fallen father and a mother who was jilted by her fiance - no wonder Lynn has such a violent temperament. It is also in a dungeon, then, that she chooses to confront Ayn - Rhys' son and the symbol of all her resentments. It is there that she wishes to make her feelings known and settle her grudges once and for all.

I like Wren and Mieu. On paper the idea of a royal line of succession battling the forces of darkness and a century spanning war is great. The notion that the different offspring would have different adventures is ambitious as fuck. It's just that nothing ever really clicked. Even mechanically the game is just dull and artistically everything is so drab and the music is boring.

All of you anons bring up excellent points, and probably the biggest reasons I don't mind going back every so often to slog through it. I almost feel like Gen 2 is where they ran out of time and money to pour into the game, which led to the haphazard Gen 3, whose only difference(as mentioned) was your starting party and location. I don't know if other games of the time were doing better at this point, but the lack of meaningful dialogue was criminal as well. I maintain that if we could get a true remake of this, it might be able to finally stand tall amongst its brethren, perhaps even next to PS4.

>> No.4698713

One thing that I didn't like about PS3 was how the world were so generic. once you hit Frigidia, you've seen almost all of the tilesets in the game. All of the domes are meant to be radically-different environments, but they all use the same three tilesets, with most of them using the grasslands set.

I'd redo it so that the domes become more technologically advanced to represent your journey to discover what your world really is, with it ending in Terminus being a mix of PS2's Motavia and the Ruins in PSO (to represent Dark Force having taken it over) and having no signs of the medieval stuff seen in Landen and Aquatica.

>>4698540

Yeah, the gameplay needs some work. Offensive techs are useless, some of the characters are utterly fucked in terms of balance (Warrior Kara is useless and Gwen has no inherant tech damage boost) and Wren will be using the same multi-hit gun for most of the game because of how strong they are, even late in Gen 2.

This thread made me want to finish Phantasy Star 1. Started it last April and just couldn't be asked to trudge through it half the time, but soon enough I just gave in and sped up the emulator I was using and it's made the game a lot more bearable.

About to fight Lassic and have been grinding Fishmen and everyone is around level 21-23 (Although Noah is apparently a level behind according to the PSCave).

Phantasy Star is a love/hate kind of game for me, I love the dungeons, the music (even the shitty non FM music), the graphics and the characters, but hate the fact I have no fucking idea where to go and have to resort to a guide 80% of the time, the encounter rate in dungeons (especially when they're mazes with pitfalls) can be frustrating and tedious and the game in genreal is just slow.

I prefer it to FF1, it's kind of dated but hey if it wasn't for /vr/ I wouldn't have played it. Pic related made me take interest in the series and I saw it poster here years ago.

I think PS1 is overall better than FF1, but FF1 has the edge in replayability with the class system. You can do some pretty crazy stuff with its classes.

>> No.4701572

>>4701537
That's true. I finished FF1 in February, and it took me a good 20+ hours or so. I did it with the Warrior, Thief, White and Black Mage and while it was tedious to play since the Warrior was the only useful party member for 70% of the game it eventually got better and I could see the appeal of retrying with 4 Warriors or White Mages for added replayability.

As of that post, I did just finish PS1. The fucking final boss having RNG attacks was bullshit, took me 5 tries to beat him just because I got lucky with the attacks he did (he did 1 damage to Alis twice in the fight).

Hoping PS2 is a bit more straightforward in regards to where to go. I know it gets rid of the cool 1st person dungeons, but I'm hoping it makes up for it some other way.

>> No.4701593

>>4701062
That's fair but I don't think it's an adequate metric to judge the soundtrack by since it negates all the work the composers put into the less remembered tracks like this one:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iUmsE9yiFO8

It's an incredibly epic song that you only get to hear once and that's if you chose two of four possible outcomes for the game.

Dark Falz is possible if you turn Mayu into a dedicated healbot while the other attack. If he dies then you might as well reset unless you've whittled him down by a bit because there's no way your healing items can ever hope to keep up with the damage he does.

And if you think PS1's dungeons are bad, wait until you see PS2's.

Not him, but a better way to put it would be "mixed bag". While there's some good stuff in there, a lot of the common music is irritating. I mean, I love PS3's town theme and a few misc. songs, but I'm not going to praise it as a kickass OST because of them.

Phantasy Star's real strength has been in graphics, not music. PS1's graphics are still impressive, and PS4's manga-style cutscenes look better than the "cutscene with stiff and/or janky animations to convey drama" you see in most jRPGs even today.

>> No.4702602

>>4701572
You hated Dark Falz in PS1? Oh, you're going to LOVE him in 2...[/sarcasm]

Protip: He is the single reason you have to power level your party. See, he has two 'attacks': one is an AoE that can hit all or a few of your party. The second attack is the bitch, because it applies a status effect on someone THAT YOU CANNOT REMOVE WITH ITEMS! So, you can have Rudo 'consumed by greed', and he will spend every turn going through your item bag(he doesn't use anything, thank Algo, but that wouldn't be so bad if he did). You can also, and just reset if this happens, have your entire party 'gripped by fear', which has your party unable to do shit while DF tears them to pieces.
However, randomly, a weapon you get just before the last area will cure your party of those afflictions. However, as it's random in activating, you can just as easily get fucked hard while it does nothing for you.

>> No.4702704

>>4702602
PS2 is such a cruel and dark game in every way, which is why I love the contrast with the upbeat happy technology utopia music it has. You hear "Death Place" in all those hard boss fights where your party gets killed one by one, and also when you fight Mother Brain, knowing you are basically plunging humanity into the dark ages by doing so. You hear the happy city music as your party is unjustly accused of treason and imprisoned. Not to mention the whole Palma thing.

I know the general consensus of PS2's ending is that the party all dies but I can't imaging my team of god slayers couldn't massacre a bunch of sick earthmen

PS3 gets shit on a lot and it's understandable since the game got rushed. The storyline gets thin halfway through, the battle scenes are missing frames and the battle techniques completely lack any strategy (you just attack every turn and that's pretty much it).

But PS3 had by far the most pleasing aesthetics of the series. The music is in my opinion the finest music ever produced in a video game. The call and response harmonies are like an enlightenment in video game music, far superior to anything before or even after it was put out. I listen to the soundtrack on it's own, each song tells a story in it's own right and helps portray the emotion and tension that early video games just couldn't do.

The graphics, while being obviously incomplete in certain areas, were much more pleasing to the eye than any other game in the series. The other 3 installations, while far better than their FF counterparts, were cheesey in comparison.

PS3 was also much more straightforward to play, without the huge mazes and difficulty. It's a great place to start the series, to get into it without needing maps and walkthroughs. PS3 is my favorite game of all time, I like 2 and 4 as well but they just didn't have the soul that 3 did. 3 had the most potential to be a great game and it is truly sad that Sega screwed it up.
