game collecting tips

>> No.4666684

Buy games from the last two generations while they are still cheap. Right now PS2, PS3, Xbox, 360, and Wii are wide open. Gamecube has already closed.

Yard sales and thrift stores are not good sources. You want to go to a junk store. Some guy with a bunch of dirty dishes and moldy furniture sitting out in front of his shack by the side of the road. You go inside his shack he'll have a shelf full of PS2 and Xbox games for $2 each.

Collect passively and enjoy the hunt. Have a route of thrift stores, Goodwills, and Salvation Armies you go once or twice a week on the way home. Buy whatever interests you and you find along the way. You might not find something this week, but next week who knows?

I do my hunts this way and I find great stuff all the time.
NES Toploader: $40
F-Zero/Acro the Acrobat: $30
Mario Golf Toadstool Tour: $5
XBox The Duke and NES controller: $5
Super Scope: $10

Tip 1: Be rich, this is easy mode for game collecting.

Other than that, scour everything, garage sales (ask if they have old nintendos, ataris, segas, drop the big names). Facebook marketplace and craigslist. Marketplace at least here is drying up for people not knowing the value of what they have. It's getting more common to just be ebay prices now.

Know the value of your game on ebay and price charting because that's what game stores and a lot of even pawn shops use now. Know strategies for telling them why you should be able to haggle it lower than ebay prices. Don't be afraid to mention you have cash today and sitting on overpriced stock for years doesn't make cash exchange hands.

>>4666672
Be discretionary when buying from mom and pop stores. 90% of their shit will be overpriced but you can occasionally find cheap stuff, don't be afraid to haggle.

eBay is your friend, fuck Amazon. Learn to develop a discerning eye for quality and detail so you can tell when a game is in good condition and worth purchasing. Pay close attention to every aspect of the item description.

Don't ever worry about buying anything on eBay. If it comes broken, you file a return. If it arrives and it simply isn't as good as it looked on the photos, tell them it doesn't work and file a return. eBay will always side with the customer.

Never be afraid to send offers to people on eBay, if they don't have a "best offer" option. They will almost always be willing to sell it to you at a lower than listed price because they want it gone. Could be a difference of $5 or $50, but every bit counts.

Take your time. Never make impulse purchases. If you can't find a game of in the range of quality and/or price that you want, wait it out. Chances are, new copies will pop up overnight.

Go to yardsales and flea markets. These places are a treasure trove, despite what anyone might tell you. Look up when your local community yardsales are happening, wake up early and be the first one there. These people usually don't have any idea what they have and will sell it to you for literal pennies.

Don't collect just to collect. Buy games you legitimately want to play and leave time to relish them. Don't turn into an obsessive hoarder that blows all of his money on decaying plastic just for bragging rights.

If you don't appreciate the hardware and aren't willing to give it proper care, maintenance and storage, buy a modchip or everdrive instead of physical games and save your money.

>> No.4666873

>>4666697

Face it, your once obscure hobby has been adopted by normies. It will never go down in price and you'll be paying inflated prices for the rest of your life. If you like playing games and not worshiping decaying plastic and cardboard, sell what you have now and don't play into the "collector" market. Flash carts are for people who play games, if you're an autistic "collector" you deserve to pay inflated prices. Think of it as a sanity tax.

You could have a job working at McDonalds and have enough money to amass a gigantic video game collection over the period of just a few years.

I am a filthy ebay reseller. Every week I go to three thrift stores and see what I can find. Most of the time I don't buy anything because I only buy games that are worth more than $20 that I can get for less than $10.

But I know if I went and spent a mere $20 a week on video games at these places I'd soon fill my house if I were not picky about what I was buying. Most of it would be fourth generation and later stuff, but it would be a massive game collection nonetheless.

I fell for the collectorMeme too I'm afraid.

Before that I just downloaded individual roms and played them on my PC with a keyboard. Then I got into real hardware plus real media. Then PVMs, then spending 11 hours at the weekend out looking for games, spending so much on crap I will never play. Then I got flashcarts. Then I got tired of fucking around trying to get all the settings right for each game. Sold it all and got my money back.

Now I have a media center PC my friend gave me for free hooked up to my TV with a frontend, full of roms and an xbone controller so I can sit back and play with a beer.

Honestly I think the normies are most woke. Just downloading a rom to play a game for fun, no OCD collecting or autistic shit, just enjoying a game for what it is.

a few tips off the top of my head:

if you ever buy og xboxs, take out the clock capacitor immediately or only buy xboxs that already had that done.

always make sure to check out the pins on cartridge based games before you buy, if you are buying off of ebay or amazon ask the seller for pictures of the pins to see their condition.

clean the dust out of all your shit that you have already.

you can look at ebay prices via sold listings and judge how much you should pay for any given game, if buying at a store take off what would be shipping and ebay expenses to gauge how much you should pay at a store, realistically. them shop owners think they can pull some exorbitant ass ebay prices for some of their stuff sometimes and you gotta pull out the carfax and try to haggle them.

sega saturn is expensive. get a japanese saturn and an action replay 4m plus. it will cost the same as getting a u.s. saturn. so thats the best deal to get the whole sega saturn package, imports and extra memory and ram and cheat codes. do it. save some money.

dont buy disc only. dont buy stock imaged listings.

People need to understand that there's a fine line between being a real "collector" and an enthusiast who enjoys playing games. There's absolutely nothing wrong with having a few consoles and every once in awhile buying a new game to enjoy and add to your collection. It's a fun and enriching experience that can be used as a good excuse for traveling and making new friends. The problem comes from trying to use collecting, as you said, to fill a void. It's when you stop caring about your other hobbies and do nothing but collect games. It's when you stop caring about actually enjoying games and start collecting games you'll never even play just for the sake of collecting. People who have these giant game walls filled with collectibles and hundreds of games have a legitimate mental illness, but there's nothing wrong with collecting games so long as it doesn't impact your living space, wallet and social life.

I collect games i actually want to play, rather than shelf candy. So lots of my purchases are disc only (ps1 collector, btw) so that saves a lot of money.

I also keep what i want in mind, and wait out the more expensive ones till i find a deal. Like, i got a copy of megaman legends 2 for under $30, because i didn't jump on the first one i saw.

I'll also go on buying sprees of cheapies. Like, i spent $110 on a bunch of $10 and under games. I just make sure they're ones i'll play. It's important to keep that in mind, since it can be easy to end up with tons of garbage, because it was cheap.

The important thing with a collection is to be able to either create a goal like a list of specific games, or admit to yourself that you're not willing to stop at a specific point and be honest with yourself about it. Why? Because if you really WANT a fuckhuge collection, but force yourself to stop after a specific point, you'll just make yourself miserable.

Also build your collection as intelligently as you can. Start out with your favorites, price allowing, and get the blind buys later on.

If money is an issue, then buy what you can when you can. No point in going on spending sprees if it'll put you in a bad place financially. If a $5 cheapie is all you can afford this week, then get one you like. Or save up that $5 until a later date and use towards another game. Whatever. Just plan ahead as needed.

That's all i've got.
