Nice, I hope this sticks around, would be cool to help encourage more discussion about the SS.

I guess I'll throw in a little story. I had an N64 and PS1 as a kid, but didn't own a Saturn. Around 2009, I was at a friend's place and saw that he had one laying around. I asked him if he still used it and he offered to let me have it for free, gave it to me along with Albert Odyssey, Clockwork Knight, Galactic Attack and Gex. Wasn't the absolute best lineup but it got me started and I fell in love. It's a testament to the quality of the console that I still enjoyed it so much despite having no childhood nostalgia for it.

I just bought a copy of Shining Force 3 the other day, still waiting for it to show up. I'm ashamed to say I've waited this long to play it, but I'm excited. It's one of those games where I've heard nothing but good stuff about it but I've sort of purposely avoided reading/watching much about it so I wouldn't ruin it for myself. What am I in for? You’re allowed to develop an affinity for a console you missed out on when it was new. For me, I wasn’t even aware of the Saturn’s existence until late 6th gen, and I personally consider it the most worthwhile 5th gen console to own physical games for right now since it has so many unported exclusives and had shoddy emulation until mednafen came along.

Granted, someone not willing to put up with Japanese or else lacking a Scrooge McDuck-style money vault may not see things the same way, but it’s possible to like something while acknowledging that it wasn’t the right product for its time.

>Has it progressed to a decent extent in the last few years?
The old Japanese emulator SSF always worked fine for many games, but the major development of the last few years has been the Mednafen Saturn core, which is under active development and already has the best compatibility and performance as far as I know.

>is there a way to pirate games decently on real hardware?
Cheap modchips exist and are easy to install because they plug into a ribbon cable, so there is less soldering involved. There is also an expensive drive-replacement board that lets you load games from an SD card, but it is hard to get.

It depends on what you buy. If you flash PseudoSaturn to an AR, you have RAM cart support but no save support. If you get a Saturn Gamer's Cartridge, you have save support but no RAM cart support.

There's supposed to be a cart in the pipeline by the SGC creator that will unify both featuresets called Wasca, but its progress is about as opaque and slow as that of the Satiator ODE, so you'll potentially be waiting a while to see anything come of it.

Alright guys, so I've got a question. I just bought a Saturn and it's in pretty good condition, but it has some scuffs and scratches as is par for the course. I want to make it look beautiful again. I've looked up plenty of guides and videos and the like, but most of them just tell you the common sense shit like q-tips, rubbing alcohol, washing the plastic, magic eraser, etc. I'm looking for more advanced methods, maybe ways of helping to obscure scratches and restore the sheen of the plastic, things like that. If anybody has some resources or suggestions I would be highly appreciative.

I thought maybe there was something you could do to give the plastic to give it a smoother finish and obscure the rough edges of the scratches, like a special coating or spray or whatever. I know it sounds kind of silly but I'm sure something like that must exist. I've seen some people use WD-40 for such a purpose but that would probably fuck up your plastic over time so I'm looking for more of a proper alternative.

Ended up picking up a Saturn last year for cheap only to realise I had no games. Got Bust-a-Move 2 and Sonic 3D Blast for cheapness sake, only to say "Fuck this noise," and followed it up with a CIB copy of Burning Rangers. Then the console stopped reading discs.

Spent more time looking up the console's inner workings than playing its games. Found out it was the laser assembly acting up, so I just bought another jacked up Saturn to swap out laser assemblies. Second one came in box with the booklets, Saturn stickers, demos, and Christmas NiGHTS. Before it arrived yesterday I tried fixing the first one; turns out I just needed to adjust the focus or whatever. So now I have a working Saturn and one with a fucked up VDP1 chip for no fucking reason.

The first Saturn wouldn't spin the disc, which could indicate an issue with the laser, which was the case, as it just needed to focus. The second Saturn reads the discs and displays the 2D graphics correctly, but only the 3D graphics look garbled. I checked the laser assembly, it seems fine, the VDP1 chip looks like it either overheated or someone tried resoldering it and failed. Now it just shows Saturn logo (with more heavily garbled 3D behind it) and blackscreens.

Morning Saturn General,

As a kid, I had both an NES and Genesis. Though I had a ton of NES games, the Genesis always won me over because of the Sonic games.

I was never interested in a Saturn as a kid, but for some reason, for the past 3-4 years, I've kinda been wanting a Saturn.

I don't know what it's best games are (I only know a few off the top of my head: Sonic CD, Battle Monsters, uh...), but I kinda want one just to have one.

But also, I heard a few years ago when I was really into /vr/ that the Saturn can be made to play Japanese games. I really like how the JP Saturn cases look like and have heard that they have way more games to play. I mean look at them!

Sorry for blogposting but I will know explore the links in the OP.

Morning anon. So I was actually in a similar boat for awhile. I grew up with a PS1/N64 and didn't even know the Saturn existed until about 2008. Around that time I started developing more of interest in niche consoles. Started doing some research, and the Saturn immediately stuck out. I tell you all of this so that you know I'm not speaking from a nostalgic standpoint when I say that it's a great console and definitely worth owning. With that said, there are some things to consider.

So first off, games. Many of the console's best games are arcade ports, or at least very arcade-like in nature. If you like fighters, shmups, racers, etc., this is the console for you. With that said, there are plenty of other great games: good ports of Quake and Duke Nukem 3D, platformers like Rayman and Clockwork Knight, RPGs like Shining Force III, and even something of a Zelda-like in Legend of Oasis. As you mentioned, you'll want to import Japanese games, as the western library is a bit smaller and a lot of good Japanese games didn't make it to the west, but there are plenty of good NTSC-U games regardless.

There's one catch: price. As consoles go, the Saturn is one of the more expensive to buy for. Typically speaking, a CIB copy of most games will range anywhere from $80 to $300. So, your best bet is either to get a modded console that can play burnt games, or buy loose discs (which are much cheaper).

If that doesn't turn you away, this console has a lot to give. It's an incredibly sturdy machine, it has built-in memory, perhaps the best 2D controller ever made, a really cool system menu, and there are even a few games that support online play. It's really a nifty little system with a lot of cool quirks.

If you have any particular questions or want game suggestions, let me know.

>we were talking about missing animations and framedrops,
And I mentioned some and you derided that I am just nitpicking.

Metal Slug has half the animations missing and some graphics lining up wrong. Marvel Super Heroes is missing 2/3rds of the frames without the card, runs at 5fps with it. Waku Waku 7 has 8-bit backgrounds. Marvel vs SF has flicking sprites whenever there are too many on screen (do a win with a team super), and it frequently drops the framerate of the game to half to keep up with the action. When you win with a team super, and it shows the attack name, sometimes they don't even fit in the screen due to the resolution. X-men vs SF may have all those problems too since both games are practically just character and background swaps.

All of those games use the RAM carts.

>We weren't talking about "arcade perfect"
I was, from the beginning.

All those Saturn ports were great FOR THE TIME, back when a typical arcade port ran half the resolution, half the colours, used either 1khz samples or FM synth sound, and had voices/characters/backgrounds missing. Coming from all of those, from the 16bit era, the Saturn arcade ports are a gigantic step up. But they are NOT perfect, they have tons of flaws and changes from the original games. We have actual arcade perfect ports now on more modern systems, as well as the ability to perfectly emulate the arcade originals. So praising the Saturn ports as "perfect" in this day and age comes off as nothing more than just buyers regret over your hundred-dollar-plus games not playing as good as you'd expect them to be.

I was talking about you nitpicking the sound/screen ratio of Vampire Savior, which doesn't have any missing animation or framedrop. I was never talking about "arcade perfect". >> No.4672961

>>4672936
>Who the fuck even notices or cares about this kind of thing?

Missing animation messes up hitboxes. But more importantly, one of the biggest charms of Metal Slug is the absolutely incredible 2d animation: taking out half of that is taking out half the game.

Not that it matters because the game has MASSIVE slowdown on Saturn. Any time you have more than a few soldiers on screen, the game runs at 10fps. Yes, the original MVS version has slowdowns too, but not even half as much as the Saturn port.

>>4672947

I just don't get people who don't take care of their shit, video game consoles or otherwise. It takes 30 fucking seconds to take a rag and give your console a little wipe down every week, and once every few years take it apart and give it a good cleaning. It's not hard. I come back to the Saturn emulation from time to time, but no matter how many times I go through its catalog there's just nothing to play. There's barely anything left once you take out the arcade ports which are better played on Mame/Model 2 Emulator and the games which are just better or more convenient to play on their PS1 versions. And I already played the likes of the Panzer Dragoon trilogy, Nights and Fighters Megamix enough back in the day. Compared to the Mega Drive, for which I discovered a bunch of great games over the years, the only hidden gem I found for the Saturn (that's still fun to play today) was Bulk Slash. It's a shame, because I have a usb adapter for the controller and the idea of playing those chunky games appeals to me, but once I sit down to actually do it I realize I'd rather play something else.

This HAS to be bait.

I am a big Zelda fan and Majoras Mask is my favorite game. I am playing through Oasis right now, and I can tell you without a doubt it holds up far better. No one can disagree that OoT is adored, a classic, a popular childhood favorite, but you need to take a step back and look objectively. It is a VERY unanimous opinion that the 5th gens early 3D games did not age well at all. Are there some good looking games? Yes, but most 3D games of the time were very blocky and not too detailed. To compare it to a 32-bit 2D video game is no contest. Even 2D 16-bit games hold up better than 64-bit 3D games without a doubt. Pixel art is detailed, colorful, sprites are big, and they are easy to pick up and play without figuring controls out.

At the end of the day, Oasis plays more like ALttP than Ocarina does. Is it a 10/10 game like it? I don't think I would say so, but it is definitely a great game worth playing if you enjoy overhead Zeldas. This dude is either stupid or baiting, no sane person in 2018 would use logic literally 20 years old. Pic related, incredible sprite art with levels of detail you just won't find in Ocarina.

Anyway, it's silly to make aribtrary statements like "all 16 bit games are inherently better than any 3D game". I often prefer 2D, but it's not a golden rule.

I wasn't saying that being 3d is the sole reason OoT is so much superior, but it's a good example of why Oasis really wasn't neat when it came out. By 1996, there were more than a dozen zelda clones. By 1998, when oasis came out, I remember thinking "wow another one." Yes, it's nice looking. But is ANOTHER fucking 2d, top down zelda clone, and it's from 1998. That's pretty late to be making 2d zelda clones. It's an ok one.
It's not quite in the same category as something which commonly gets ranked #1 best video game ever made. Or, the entire world is wrong and a few contrarians on 4chan are right and Oasis is beautiful and not just a 6/10 forgettable zelda clone on a shitty console, willfully ignored by the rest of the world.

Dipshit, you're completely missing the point. It doesn't matter if it was neat when it came out, it's not 1998 anymore, it's 2018 and nobody gives a fuck about what happened 20 years ago. If it's fun to play today, then what the fuck is your problem? You just felt the compulsive need to come into the thread and start shit for no reason, all because somebody was enjoying a game that wasn't Ocarina of Time. I happen to love OoT, but this retarded mindset that you can't like two entirely different games purely because one might have seemed more impressive 20 years ago is severe autism on your part. Nobody is going to tell you it was more unique or revolutionary than OoT, it's just a fun game and it has its own merits. Stop being an insufferable faggot and get over the fact that people might actually enjoy playing a game that isn't widely considered to be the best by popular consensus.

This will be my last response to you, and I suggest everyone else ignores this clown shoe and his inevitable reply so that we can actually get back to good discussions instead of dealing with a mentally disturbed troglodyte.

It's just not that cool of a game, considering it was 1998 by the time it came out. If asterods came out today no one would care, you can make 3d FPSs in Unity very quickly. That's an extreme example, but by 1998 no one cared about 2d zelda clones. In 2018 you should care even less. Oasis will always be a forgotten game, just like the dozens of 7/10 zelda clones that would follow it.

Stardew Valley was another example.
Unfortunately Oasis didn't innovate very much, it was decent quality but overall disappointing considering the number of extremely similar games. If Oasis had offered something more to the Zelda formula perhaps it would have been a success or fan favorite, but instead it's pretty forgettable.

It’s been years since I installed my modchip but it was easy ,you might be best giving it to someone with some soldering experience though.

There’s a program called Sega Saturn region patcher which is useful ,it lets you patch an iso for whatever region your system is,and since your system is still region locked it’s useful to have a action replay cart to play official imports.

I'd take this comparison with a massive grain of salt. Price and not having to make it an either/or decision for RAM vs. save functionality. It comes at the cost of not being plug-and-play if you need to get another Saturn, though.

That said, considering how a SGC is $80, it would honestly be cheaper just to get a flashed AR, replace the internal battery, and periodically backup the save data to a memory card if you're paranoid about messing something up while chipping. The total cost would come out to between $20-$30 less than getting a SGC.

Nah, not really. PC is only good for id and Blizzard games. Outside of that, there really isn't much worth mentioning. If you beat the game you can play as Serena later. Or use the dip switch code to unlock her right away. As for the UK? No. Not outside versus mode anyways. In that thing you can play as everyone that has a sprite. Even the mouse.
