I'm not young, but I'm just now getting into these games. I have been playing a ton of R-Type Delta and Einhander. Can anyone recommend me some other good ones? What are your favorites? Why did no one ever tell me that the FFTactics composer did music for this type of game?

Are you just looking for stuff on PS1, or are you open to emulation? Either way, PS1 had some good ones. Here are the one that I can verify are fun.
The Raiden Project
Raystorm
R-Types
Thunder Force V
Raycrisis, I guess. Some people swear it's great, but I thought it was average.

I don't know if you're a buyer or an emulator. Here are the good import titles I've played.
Harmful Park
Zanaz X Zanac
Gradius Gaiden
Donpachi
Dodonpachi

The two Cave games are arcade ports. If you want to experience them better, you get MAME running. In general, I'd suggest going on MAME, downloading a bunch of stuff you think looks interesting, and trying them for yourself. That's how I found a lot of my favorite stuff.

For beginners I recommend: Gradius V, Axelay, DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu, Mushihimesama, Jamestown, Crimzon Clover, Sine Mora and perhaps Ikaruga.

If you like Danmaku (Bullet Hell, Maniac Shooters) CAVE shooters like DonPachi, DoDonPachi, ESPGaluda, Mushihimesama, Deathsmiles, Muchi Muchi Pork & Pink Sweets, Ketsui and Akai Katana are amazing, easy to play but hard to master and have cool scoring systems. All the Touhou Project games are fun too, but to brutal hard for the beginner.

More great STG to consider: M. U. S. H. A. (Aleste), Space Megaforce (Super Aleste), Raiden series, Darius series (Dariusburst is great), Battle Garegga, The Guardian Legend (Adventure/STG), Parodius series, eXceed series, U. N. Squadron, Chariot, Time Pilot, Sonic Wings (Aero Fighters) series, 19XX, Salamander series, Last Resort, Space Harrier, Gaiares, Thunder force series, Fantasy Zone series, Ibara, Panzer Dragoon series, Batsu trilogy (Batsugun, Batrider, Bakraid), Zanac, Kiki KaiKai series, Iridion series, Bio-Hazard Battle, Radiant Silvergun, Sigma Star Saga (RPG/STG), R-Type series, Summer Carnival '92 Recca, Xexex, TwinBee series, Xevious, Star Soldier series, Zombie Nation, Flying Shark (Sky Shark), Hellfire, Raptor, Jets' n' Guns, Syder Arcade, Castle of Shikigami series, Twinkle Star Sprites, Cotton series, Dimahoo, Pulstar, Cho Aniki, Prehistoric Isle series, Strania: The Stella Machina, Blazing Star, Gundemonium series.

This guy, listen to this man. Every last one of those game he mentioned are great, except Cho Aniki and Hellfire. Cho Aniki is average and stops being funny somewhere around when you've seen outrageous muscleman #99999 and realize that it's telling the same 4 jokes over and over again. Hellfire is bland.

Also, Batsugun has nothing to do with Batrider and Bakraid. They're good games, but the first one is unrelated to the second two.

Cho Aniki is just for laughs only, if you need to play a kusoge STG game, play this one.

Hellfire is average, but fun. Personal choice.

The Batsu trilogy, isn't official, "spiritual sequel" is a more accurate term. Three great games with several elements in common.

Welcome to my life.

Also in Einhander, all the guns you've ever equipped are unlocked as a starter gun pod when you game over. So on a fresh save I like to do an unlocking run, just grab every gun pod type you can find, game over, make a save, then do a proper run. The Grenade is a fantastic early gun to unlock because it fucks bosses up very quickly.

Yeah we can all just list every game we know you fucking plum but it's obvious to me you know little about actual play, suggesting pink sweets makes it obvious whilst not mentioning ddp daioujou and akai katana is not amazing at all with deathsmiles being far superior and a great beginner game and progear being much better if you want a hori danmaku. NO THEY FUCKING AREN'T you abosolute cock womble, why the fuck does vr know cunt all about anything? where the fuck does your retard brain get this nonsense info from? batsugun was made by toaplan who disbanded and formed into other companies (cave for one) and has absolutely NO relation to garegga which was inspired by gun frontier (yagawas fav game), No relation to batrider which was a garegga sequel of sorts and NO relation to bakraid. Look guys, All I want to talk about is Einhander.

>> No.4661959

I am looking for a shmup (regardless of how obscure), that would fit these criteria:

- horizontal (euro?)shmup (vertical is ok, if fits other criteria, but horizontal is vastly preferable)
- mandatory ship momentum simulation (no "raw" arcade-style controls)
- as few Gradius/R-Type references of any kind as possible
- level layouts built just so to be occasionally utilized as cover

Longer version of the request:

"I am looking for a non-shit (regardless of however obscure) HORIZONTAL SHMUP (vertical could be fine as well, but horizontal is preferable), that would fit these very specific criteria:

1) Software-side MOMENTUM SIMULATION on a ship. "Raw" acrade-style controls depend on usage of arcade stick - and the games, that use arcade-style raw input, are simply, in my opinion, unplayable on keyboard, due to it being discrete. Shmups, where the momentum is simulated by the game itself, not by the movement of a stick (be it arcade stick or thumbstick) ARE perfectly playable using discrete controls.

tl;dr: I want to use KEYBOARD, I need SIMULATED MOMENTUM physics in the game in order to do that.

2) No multiple, no force, certainly no Moai heads or patterns copied from Gradius. In general, AS LITTLE GRADIUS/R-TYPE COPYPASTE AS POSSIBLE. The game needs to do its own thing gameplay-wise and artistry-wise.

3) Not a "what the fuck is even happening" flash/explosion-stravaganza, simple, apparent hitboxes (so, please, no cute anime witches on brooms from some doujin), no 5-frame input lag, certainly not a fucking bullethell. Some interesting level layouts requiring precision of movement, usage of cover and precisely calculated and timed attacks are preferable.

4) It should be playable and (gasp!) somewhat fun, regardless of how obscure it is."

Any suggestions?

You got this bro! wait until you get to the elevator.

Have you found the juno or the flash yet? Keep looking for secrets, you do know how to find them, right?

You gotta shoot anything with red paint/coloring or a series of things that show up in a line

U wot m8. If you want to disgust them away from the genre forever maybe.

>> No.4669853

Also Gunbird on the Saturn is another good beginner's shooter. It has 9 difficulty settings, the lowest being monkey for the shittiest of shitters.

Make sure to remind him where to find Mosquito and Phyton. Those two only exist in one place. Flash and Juno got 3 different places to be found.
And always stock up on Wasp, you need to destroy the background object and popcorn enemies fast.

I'd give Mosquito being garbage, but Python is useful for peeling off the monkey shortly, so that the better weapon, Flash will be easier to access.

but its available earlier, why wait until monkey?

Well, another Flash is always a good thing, considering the boss of the stage is quite hard.
And if by chance he missed the secret, the Flash in monkey is easier to get.

I had to put the controller down tonight after too many deaths to the yellow laser crab. Fortunately I've unlocked the ability to start every new life with a subweapon of my choice somehow. Next time!

Hog the grenade then just spam the fuck out of it at the nigga's legs. You're destroying its legs by the way, not its head. The legs will catch fire sooner or later.

You are destroying the core, like all einhander bosses.

>> No.4671797

Just finished Cyber Core. Pretty easy game until you get to the fourth level and it actually starts to get a bit challenging. Otherwise the game play was great, had a pretty cool theme, even if the backgrounds were a bit lacking. Gonna try it on hard mode next time. Been trying to get into Override but holy shit this game gets ridiculous similarly at the fourth level.

Oh shit thanks for mention MUSHA now I have to download that sound track

>> No.4673560

Just played a bunch of Winds of Thunder. Very cool game. I love the theme, and I love the plethora of different enemies and details. The entire game is polished ass fuck.

Anyway, I beat the game using each of the four armors (weapons) for the entire playthroughs. Some of my thoughts.

Earth: Widely considered the best armor. May as well be, considering how absolutely damaging it is. On the other hand, you need to be very close to enemies, making you more vulnerable. The bomb is powerful, but is not completely reliable for defensive uses because it drops from the sky, so you might get hit before the meteors neutralize the enemy bullets.

Water: Very useful against normal enemies thanks to the backward shots and the rapid firing rate. However, it's the weakest weapon by far, especially against bosses. Worst weapon against bosses, but great during the stages. The bomb is great. Instantly wipes out enemy bullets and still does pretty decent damage. Some sites claim that this is the best weapon, but I disagree. Once you know the enemy patterns then getting flanked is not a problem.

Wind: Very underrated. Think of it as the Water armor with less versatility, but more damage and stronger on bosses. Way better than Water against bosses. Best weapon to use against the triple crystal boss. I think people don't like the Wind armor because the diagonal shots are weak, but think of those as just the cherry on top. This weapon is highly useful with a single upgrade. The bomb is great for defense but does the least amount of damage. I expected this weapon to suck, but was pleasantly surprised by how good it actually is.

Fire: Strong as fuck. Obviously not as strong as Earth, but pretty close. Less damage than Earth, but more coverage. Also... the bomb. The Fire armor's bomb is a boss raper. Nothing else comes close when it comes to killing bosses.

Of course, you can just face fuck everything with Earth, but the other armors are perfectly viable (and safer overall).

Any shmups with a health bar? Preferably vertical. Already played Tyrian, Raptor and Demonstar.

UN Squadron on SNES has one but it's horizontal. Axelay on SNES has what's basically the equivalent of a health bar and it's a mix of vertical and horizontal. Both are fantastic.

Just credit-fed my way through RayCrisis

I'll never understand these games, I guess.
Like with most of them, I didn't feel like I was missing out by not trying to 1cc it. Didn't seem to be must to the game itself and trying to 1cc it would be a way to act like there was substance there when there isn't

I beat the first level in R-Type Delta without getting hit! ... and then I proceeded to lose all of my continues and game over when I hit the point with the fish and the bees underwater. If you die once there, forget about it, because then you have to go through it without a good weapon.

There's tons of stuff which is actually damn great. The emulator makers, especially MAME team have made exceptional job to preserve the digital heritage of arcade games. Without these guys lot of games would fall into obscurity as the arcade machines get old and trashed and their boards die etc...
I used to have a habit to play one or two games at the time, just a little bit at least every night but it's been many months since I picked up any shmup. I'm still at Dodonpachi and Battle Bakraid. Bakraid was relatively easy and I enjoyed it, could lap it easily but Dodonpachi on other hand, I have never 1cc'd it.
I'm on Win10 (with good specs) and using just the standard MAME ui with DS4 controller. I feel that there is slight input lag but I can't be sure if it's just the emulation and the way it's supposed to be played. It's especially present on Bakraid.

It's because you aren't a bright person as witnessed by self assurance of an stupid assessment without experience. When you've stopped being a ugly feral man child dad bod noodle armed CUNT and actually sit down and start THINKING about what you're doing you'll find quite rapidly that you need routing and strategy and with it comes a wealth of depth and nuance that simple can never be recognized without experience.
