Main guy at oldunreal has an NDA for UE1. he has source code for versions..

220, 224v,(225f was lost/overwritten by 226f) 226f, 400, 432, 436, 451 and some unreleased builds of UT. upak.dll source was never dug up by epic -- "we dont have the bandwidth to..." so it's just a dummy dll where the original intent of the code was rewritten in uscript.

For what its worth, when Tim says the middleware in UE1 is a problem -- it's not. Galaxy source code was given to the devs from the original creator, and all renderers and such were made by the community. This also includes some new audio drivers.

Best I can think of that might be blocking is some proprietary intel SSE/gamespy shit still in the source code. Intel SSE instructions have C++ equivalent code -- so they can be stripped easily.

also, UE1 is surprisingly similar to UE4. More or less UE4 has a better rendering system, better audio system, and less... hacked physics/actors. The core workings of the engine (actors, subsystems) are largely the same.

UE4 still has unrealscript, it's blueprints now, there is no uscript compiler as /vr/ knows it, but you could theoretically reimplement it if you had UnCorSc.cpp

I'm curious, what is stopping him from releasing those unreleased UT builds, just part of the NDA?

>> No.4670965

he sees it as UTPG's job to release UT builds. Those guys still have an NDA for UT, but basically do nothing. Apparently, nothing very important was changed between 451 and whatever version... 468? he has. It's been a while since I asked about it.

Another reason is that he sees releasing a half baked build with no real bugfixes as kind of insulting to the community. Enough time has been spent on U1 alone that I can't imagine him working on U1 and UT at the same time.

Pretty sure you can just change your inis to support it -- or use "setres 1920x1080" (or res of your choosing) and use "fov" command to support widescreen. I don't know if there's a limit on FOV with ultrawide res

enjoy your tiny ass hud/text though, not really shit that can be done about that at all from what I understand.

remote execution can be disabled by making your System folder readonly -- sucks if you want to save servers as favorites or something though. I guess you could explicitly make your UnrealTournament.ini and User.ini not read only.

With the free Unreal Gold I decided to finally give it a try. Here's what I like so far.

Weapons are very fun to use. I wish the automag could fire as fast as I could click though. What people say about the flak cannon is no joke though. It's really satisfying and really fun to use. I like it even more than the eight ball. Enemies that are able to actively dodge you are awesome. Makes it a challenge, but not annoying.

What I don't like:
Lack of a windowed mode. Many people don't like that but it's something I look forward to in a game since windowed won't mess with my monitor resolution or possibly crash the game when I alt tab. If there is a mod that implements windowed mode I'm all ears.

many upak only maps were in the original SP campaign, but cut, and slapped back in as a secondary campaign with some extra levels thrown in.

You should give the beta campaign a go to see if you like it any better. Unfortunately some maps are clearly not polished very well due to being cut seemingly early in the process, but to me it felt more complete overall as maps were connected to eachother in a more elaborate way

Quake is a game about individual self-expression of mappers through layout design and basically saying "Fuck you Romero, I design the way I like".

Unreal is about layout design ending up environmental design's bitch, and individual self-expression being sacrificed for the "higher vision" of the single project director (Schmalz). The struggle of individuality versus conformance is reflrected in the ingame content itself, with conformance ultimately winning.

Continuing in the Quake's direction was, however, pretty much impossible since it, alongside Doom, achieved exactly what it aimed to: spawned the modding scene the way we currently know it.

Following Quake and empowering individual mappers, would've turned Unreal into a simple copycat, while going full out on the coherent aesthetics even though it meant employing censorship on the mappers, made it stood out, even if only for a little while.

In other words, Unreal's downfall was rooted in the fact, that capitalizing on aesthetics was a way to make it un-Quake (no pun intended), pretty much the same way Marathon's downfall was rooted in the fact it was basically hipster un-Doom with "le story" (Pathways into Darkness had way less resemblance in relation to anything made by id pre-Doom, Wolf3D included, than Marathon had in relation to Doom - and Halo actually has way more of Pathways in it concept-wise, than of Marathon). Half-Life, having been made on Quake's engine of all things, however, did something different, but as for right now, I am unsure as to how to describe it. For one, in constrast with Unreal, it WASN'T a direct response to Quake.

Quake as a whole, however, is NOT a work of art. It's a TOOL for creating works of art and the medium through which they can be accessed by the audience. And, at the same time, it frames layout designing as genuine artistry.

> Half-Life, having been made on Quake's engine of all things, however, did something different, but as for right now, I am unsure as to how to describe it. For one, in constrast with Unreal, it WASN'T a direct response to Quake.

Half-Life was the Quake 2 done right. Gaben fixed all its flaws in both single and multiplayer and added it's own story, which was narrated in a pretty innovative way, making it more cinematic yet still immersive experience. That wasn't unique feature, all companies wanted to do that, but they were still thinking in the box of text-based narration. Unreal, like System Shock tried to tell story through texts left for the player in a almost empty world.

One closely follows Quake's mold and in the end creates out of it essentially an interactive painting. Another one literally uses Quake's engine in order to created an interactive Hollywood action movie.
Subsequently the first one flies off the radar shortly thereafter, and becomes a semi-obscure singleplayer addition to the multiplayer series spawned from it, while the second one rises to become a smashing hit.
Like, I don't claim Unreal is a pushover, but the difference in reception and in legacy between it and HL is evident.
I don't think HL being all movie-like is the only reason that would account for that difference.

Moreover, HL2 also went "interactive painting" route with Antonov's art direction. However, it still felt to me very much UNLIKE Unreal at its core. In what way exactly, I can't currently tell though.

>all this wankery to excuse Quake 2 for having one of the most forgettable singleplayer campaigns in any FPS
Come on, the game was tedium in digital form, it was obviously a MP experience with tacked-on SP content. HL1 and Unreal are so ahead of its design that it's not even funny. The only Quake with good maps that actually utilized the 3D capabilities in interesting ways was Quake 1, though it suffers from lack of cohesion the first three episodes had great maps.
Honestly, I have a hard time forgiving Q2 for starting the whole industrial-warehouse-complex-with-crates design philosophy that was so common in mediocre FPS from late 90s/early 2000s.

you can turn off the texture filtering, the mouse smoothing, and the vsync in the updated opengl dll at least. though in my experience you would want to cap the fps or it would go superfast at least in singleplayer

1.) Download the latest OpenGL renderer for Unreal Tournament.
2.) Install the renderer by placing it in the System folder within your Unreal Tournament folder.
3.) Open the Unreal Tournament/System/UnrealTournament.ini with your text editor.
4.) Add these lines under [OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice];
HighResTextureSmooth=False
LowResTextureSmooth=False
UseTriliear=False
UseAA=False
NoFiltering=True
UseMipmapping=False
SwapInterval=0
UseVsync=0
FrameRateLimit=60
-and then save.
5.) Open Unreal Tournament, then Options, and then preferences.
6.) Under Video Driver press the Change button.
7.) Finally press Show other devices in the bottom right and then select OpenGL Support.

also works in unreal as well

This is a great setup, it looks very similar to software.

I've always had a problem with how dark UT maps are though. I'm fine with atmospheric gloominess in a singleplayer game, but in MP I like to see what I'm doing properly. Increasing brightness to a comfortable level just makes it look washed out - I confess I vastly prefer the 2k4 aesthetic. Is there anything like a visual mod that makes the game a bit more colorful?

Took /vr's advice and began Return to Na Pali and while I enjoy it far mroe than i thought I would I do have some gripes that I want to know if I'm alone at or not.

For starters the new weapons seem too standard compared to the imaginative ones already implemented in Unreal. the assault rifle is a bullet hog, grenade launcher seems underpowered and the rocket launcher had already existed (to an extent) before the expansion.

Also the spiders being a new enemy is a bit of a stretch as the only new thing about them is their projectile weapon which appears the same as the goo gun. Also for some odd reason the mini-raptors scatter when they're solo but go into death mode when in packs... it makes sense but stood out at the same time.

Overall I'm all for more gameplay but wish the new weapons were more on the level of what Unreal already cemented.
