Is there any kind of list of Top down action or action-rpg games? I'm in the mood for some, and I'd like some kind of guide.

Ones I can think of:

>Zelda seires
>Soul Blazer
>Illusion of Gaia
>Terranigma
>Willow (nes)
>Crystalis
>Neutopia I+II
>Ys series
>Crusader of Centy

Do you want RPGs or action adventures, because most of those aren't RPGs.

Came here to suggest this. Just started a playthrough of Alundra haven't played since childhood and loving it.

In practice these are basically the same. The only difference is you can level up or equip more items. In terms of gameplay they're the same.

Isometric action > top-down action

Is Seiken Densetu 3 worth playing?

Mind you, I got bored of both 1 (Final Fantasy Adventure), 2 (Secret of Mana) and never played the others.

I HATE Isometric. The view angle just seems so incredibly unnatural. It's very difficult to do anything with precision. They control very awkwardly.

If you got bored of Secret of Mana, I don't know what this game would offer. The gauge that needs to fill before you attack is gone, though there is a much shorter time until your attack is automatically ready. The game is much more focuses on melee combat than SoM's magic spam.
You can freely choose three out of six characters, changing your story (final dungeon and boss, more or less) depending on your main character (two characters share the same storyline). There is also a class system where you can choose "light"/"dark" branches for each character twice as you level up, ending up with four endgame classes for each character. But there is no weapon system like in Secret of Mana.
I don't know what exactly bored you about SoM (never played the first), so I'd say give it a try and dabble around until you get your second party member (doesn't take too long) and see if it catches your interest.

I dislike how many of these games have either cheap or terrible combat. There's something about Zelda games being fairly simplistic, but not so that you lose freedom to move around and use other strategies. In many of these games I don't see such thing, I see something more repetitive and slow. I liked some of the games on the list by OP but I must say out of all of those, Terranigma was the only one to satisfy me on that level, because even though it had a combat system that was overly simplistic and magic was almost unnecessary, it still was fast paced enough.

If you want to go obscure there was this pain in the ass and fairly difficult SNES game. I've gone back and beaten a lot of games that gave me trouble as a kid but this one...well, it's a licensed game called King Arthur and the Knights of the Round based off of some old cartoon show. The combat seems easy enough at first but then as you play you quickly get lost since you have 12 characters to choose from and AFAIK the game never really tells you you need to have a certain one in your party to fight the first boss, which is also a fucking dragon that breaths fire with shit tier hitboxes

Completely not-retro but the Rune Factory games give you the option to use both weapons like swords or axes and other items like a hammer or a hoe to beat monsters with. It might not be as varied as most Zelda games but maybe you'd like it.

Rune Factory is buggy but a solid title.
2 didn't leave much of an impression.
Frontier is widely considered the best entry in the series. The "balancing Runeys" mechanic is a bitch though.
3 is better than Rune Factory 2.
Never played Tides of Destiny, but my sister did. It's garbage. Doesn't feel like a Harvest Moon game.
Never played 4, no comment there.

Frontier > 1 > 3 > 2 >>>> Tides

One issue all of them suffer is that by the end dungeons pay well enough that you might as well not be farming.

I'm playing RF4 and it feels like a culmination of Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing and action RPGs with some neat things added like leveling up some specific stats and catching and leveling monsters like in Pokemon. It might come off as a "jack of all trades, master of none" at first glance and the story isn't anything special but it's surprisingly addicting and the gameplay is very varied.

That being said, it's not /vr/-related so I will sage my own post.
