Any gushing/recommendations for retro rail shooters/3D Shmups/whatever you want to call them? I'm a big fan of this genre, and already like stuff like Space Harrier, Panzer Dragoon, StarFox, etc, so personally I would prefer to know more about some lesser-known titles in this genre, especially ones for the PS1. Also, of course, discuss and argue about your favorites.

Sin and Punishment for sure.
It's my favorite along with Zwei and SF64. It doesn't have alternate paths like these two, but it's twice as crazy.

I never expected such a game to be found on the 64. S&P is definitely my favorite game on the system.

Rez is my second favorite in this genre

Panzer Dragoon series is the only good one desu. Space Harrier is also fun, but a bit dated.

>>4653567
That's a Cabal-like, not a rail shooter.

Get a load of this faggot. Not enough cringe anime characters for you or what?

Same as the on-foot missions on PDII. OP's screen is basically cabal.

>> No.4653832

wait if the games where you move your ship are rail shooters, what are we calling these games where your ship stays on a rail and you only control the gun sight?

Light gun on-rail shooters.

It doesn't use a light-gun. Are you still going to call it a light gun on-rail shooter?

In Star Fox you can move up and down, how is that Cabal? In the Cabal genre you can only move left and right
"A main character is viewable in 3rd Person, capable of only left and right directional movement;
Additional maneuvers such as jumping or ducking are acceptable, moving forward or backward is not;"

Not quite. The unevolved dragon stages in PD Zwei still have you moving forward constantly. In S&P you make constant pauses to fight waves of enemies, which is how it works in Cabal-like shooters- you spend more time standing still (or rolling/strafing to the side) than you do moving forward.

Gamera 2000 was already mentioned, I really liked it and I have also enjoyed Vanark.

Both of them are quite short and easy though.

Interesting. I never actually went that route (and looking it up, you get rewarded less points for going that path). Still, that's the only time it plays like a Cabal-style shooter, so I would still classify it as a 3D shmup/rail shooter, unlike S&P.

>> No.4655413

>>4655402
s&p still has a lot of on-rail parts.
These games all have their own unique quirks (Pd lets you rotate in 360, S&P gets crazy and the last level has a side-scrolling section too).
It's hard to classify these games, they are "3D shooting" games according to the japanese game boxes

>> No.4655454

I've always preferred the term "chase view shooter".
