When was the last time an ODE for any system cost less than $150? It's still a new technology for consoles and mostly in the "garage kit" stage.

Also, is the consensus for maintaining GD-ROM drive longevity to not burn games at all? Or is there a widely accepted "low-wear" setting that games should be burned at to avoid wearing down the laser?

Also would strongly recommend adding a link to a boot disc ISO like Utopia or Codebreaker for future threads if possible. A lot of games are noticeably cheaper in NTSC-J format, including low-text games such as Capcom fighters.

>When was the last time an ODE for any system cost less than $150? It's still a new technology for consoles and mostly in the "garage kit" stage.
Good point. I remember the x360 ODDE being prices similarly.
>Also, is the consensus for maintaining GD-ROM drive longevity to not burn games at all? Or is there a widely accepted "low-wear" setting that games should be burned at to avoid wearing down the laser?
As far as I know, you should only use “good dumps” and burn at a slow speed to not get any errors. “Good dumps” are dumps with a dummy-file, for smaller games, so the laser is working more on the outside of the CD.
>Also would strongly recommend adding a link to a boot disc ISO like Utopia or Codebreaker for future threads if possible. A lot of games are noticeably cheaper in NTSC-J format, including low-text games such as Capcom fighters.

Thinking about going into dreamcast.

Look onto the downside of the console. There must be a 0 or 1 in a circle for it to be capable of playing burned games. Consoles with the number 2 aren’t capable to play burned games, without a modchip, as far as I know. Luckily, the number 2 consoles aren’t very common.

The price for a console varies, depending on its condition and accessories. 40€ for a console + controller and VMU, and the TV cable seem fair, imo. If you want one now, that is. I’ve seen them even cheaper too.
You can snatch up pretty good deals if you keep your eyes open. I paid 100€ for a DC, with 4 controllers, 4 VMU’s, some extra accessories such as rumble packs and so on, a mouse and keyboard and a fuck-ton of games.
Buying local might be your best bet.

That’s all that I remember for now. Someone might add sth to look out for.

On top of what's already been mentioned:

- Don't plug in/pull out controllers while the console is on, you will damage the fuses in the controller ports and potentially kill it outright
- The internal battery of your console will most likely be dead, while not relevant for 99% of games, games dependent on accurate RTC like Seaman will not work properly unless you replace that
- GD-ROM drives and their components are not cheap or easy to repair/replace, be sure to follow the points in >>4652685 when burning games unless you like buying multiple consoles or sinking 2-3 Dreamcasts worth of money into an ODE
- If your Dreamcast's original shell was not either white or black, it's Japanese. Be mindful if picking up a colorful DC from online

I don't, but I can't imagine the games loaded on it would work all that well since they're being read through the serial port. The port has about half the data transfer bandwidth of reading discs from the GD-ROM, which is why no one has bothered trying to develop a serious ODE using it.

It was released well before the other 6th gen consoles. The modern controller hadn't been standardized yet. Sega was still doing well in arcades, so they designed a console favorable to arcade-to-console conversions. That's why a lot of the games are short-lived wacky stuff, the sort of games you would find in arcades.

Nice find on the internal VGA mod. I already have a USB GDROM and PicoPSU mod so this looks like the next thing I'll tackle. I love the fact that it has the ability to turn it on and off.

By the way, I'll add my buying experience on the USBGDROM. You pay the guy, then hear absolutely NOTHING from him. In about a month and a half, it shows up on your doorstep with no fanfare. The whole ordering process seems shady, but the guy does deliver the board. As far as I know, he's never ripped any individuals off, and in a niche market like this, if he had, you would hear about it. He had some issue with stoneagegamer.com, but I think it was just too much demand for him to keep up with. English isn't his first language, which might be why you won't hear a word once you order.

Again, it looks shady as fuck and is pretty nerve wracking while waiting, but you will get your product in a month or month and a half.

In Japan, Sega did some really cool things with Dreamcast that no other company had tried before. Look at El Derado Gate: It's a capcom 7-disc RPG that was sold bi-monthly for $30 for each disc/chapter. I don't know how long each chapter is, but it was still a novel idea. Unfortunately, chapters 4-7 are literally unplayable now on anything other than a legit Japanese Dreamcast and burns of them do not work.

As someone who picked up a Dreamcast in mid-2000, it was a really fun system. It was so far ahead of anything at the time and even though the PS2 launched in late 2001, it took well over a year for PS2 to get any really good games. I was having a blast with Dreamcast with my friends who also had them because they were so cheap by 2002 when Sega pulled the plug. We had burns of every game over the next two years.

I miss those days

Nice. Ive had the gdemu for a while now. The usb board looks nice. I like the idea of having all the games on 1 hdd/ssd conpared to 6 sd cards. I could just get one giant sd card but these were cheaper at the time.

I also ordered some 3d printed fan housing of ebay. It lets you fit a small noctua fan in place of the loud stock dreamcast fan. Waiting to install it as soon as my new system clock battery holder comes in. So i can do both at once.

You’re right about El Dorado Gate. One of the better hackers out there now took a crack at it and he couldn’t get it working either. Capcom tried a ton of different methods of copy protection over the course of the Dreamcast’s life. It’s odd that they didn’t apply the one in El Dorado Gate to everything since it worked so well.

When you replace the drive with a drive emulator the power supply runs too hot. Without a load to the drive it outputs 14v constantly. You can remove the 12v rail which pretty much fixes it, but it still gets hotter than it should. The picopsu/dreampsu solves the problem. You can get 3d printed power ports so you don't have to drill holes in your console.

Maybe one day Capcom will re-release it but it's likely never going to be played again because of the copy protection.

Every dreamcast system out there is at least 17-20 years old and their drives are failing. N64 is cart based and has no moving parts so those systems could probably last for decades just like the NES and SNES have. At this point, any CD-based retro system needs to have some form of emulation that works well because they will 99% all be dead over the next 10-20 years. A workaround is to get the system to read roms from a SD card instead of CDs which lowers the amount of moving parts.

You can. Even better you can just burn games to CD-Rs and play them in an unmodified console, which you obviously can't do with an N64.
The extra stuff not necessary. The drive-replacement stuff is for people who want to load games without burning discs, so it's like the equivalent of an EverDrive for CD-based systems.
DreamPi is for connecting to the internet without needing to have real dialup service at your house.
The PSU thing is stupid, just another mod for people who have already modded their DC so much that the original power supply isn't suitable anymore.
The VGA mod is just because the highest quality video signal the console produces is VGA, but the cable that uses it is expensive. It's simpler than the RGB mods people do on other consoles, more like just adding standard video ports to your consoles so that you don't have to use the special A/V port cables most had.

It's like pretty much any other mechanical device. Some are lemons and some aren't. They are more likely to fail in the first 5 years than in the second 5 years. Any machine that has worked for a long time without any problems is more reliable than a brand new machine, because you never know if the new one will break down tomorrow. Some Dreamcasts surely had problems and stopped working long ago, some recently. But most of the ones that are still alive are clearly "good eggs" that lasted this long. We'd need a lot of data to produce a failure-rate curve that we can extrapolate into the future, but it's safe to say that at least some DCs will keep working for many more years to come.

Makes no difference. You are still increasing the volume of the console by 50% for no good reason. I love that the Dreamcast is essentially portable. It's already a very compact console, and the fact that it uses only a simple power cord makes it even better.

I know that the replacement PSU is better with certain mods, but if it were me I would consider modifying the original PSU instead. If leaving the 12V line unloaded causes it to overheat, maybe you could just put a large resistor across it (or something, I dunno, that's probably so simple that everyone would do it if it worked).

Your time must be worth nothing if you have nothing else to do except sit there and watch a disc burn. Confirmed it's worthless because if it takes more than a couple minutes for the biggest game your a "burn at the slowest speed" tard. Must be even more wortless since your an underage bandwagoner who didn't burn everything years ago.

Not at all, like I said the only reason for it is that the Dreamcast VGA cable is expensive. If you are the kind of person who solders and has connectors and a dremel tool lying around, you can mod VGA yourself and avoid the cost. If buying all that stuff would cost you more than $50 anyway, just use the cable.

My money is on recased. While I can't find it right now I know I've seen that color of dreamcast shell available on ebay before. And while it is a nicer one with the logos and everything I'm pretty sure there was never an official console in that color. There were controllers made in translucent yellow though. Because china had them beat the moment sega stopped producing them. It's not expensive to get a fake shell. Though it does cost as much as a dreamcast does to pay for the goods and shipping.

I've heard of people extending the lever in case it becomes weak, but why tape it like this? Dreamcast doesn't need disc switching really.

I removed it after and it worked, but due to her old age, she stopped reading a bootleg half-life dc disc mid game, so she's better but it still pains me to see her fumble

Thats odd. Not sure but maybe some of the old tricks of getting it to play imports needed a quick disc change. Just a wild guess as im not sure how all that worked.
As for reading the game, the dreamcast i keep and play in the garage usually needs me to give the disc a good spin as it cant get it going on its own. Never had it give up on me mid game though.

Vga to hdmi for quality. If your tv has component inputs, you should still be able to use composite cables.

Then use vga. Especially since your tv has a port for it you wont need to fuck with a converter box. For the few games dont support it just keep a composite or scart cable handy. Look up the non vga list of games online to see if it even affects you.

I think it's a pretty cool game, but the controls are odd. It's in a time before controls were standardized and it's pretty strange. Right now I'm just using S-Video on a nice consumer model CRT, but I'd like to do better. I do own a VGA cable, but right now I don't have any VGA monitors. Buy a pal Dreamcast and use an import enabler. For a japanese console you’d need a voltage converter, or get another PSU for your DC, depending on where you are from.
