I've played a lot of Dungeon Crawlers, but I figured that it was my duty to go back and play some of the games that started it all. I've played a lot of new ones, like Etrian Odyssey, Legend of Grimrock, and Demon Gaze (Shit like that.)

I figured that I owe it to the crawlers to go back and play some of the games that started the genre. But before I do, I have a couple questions.

>Any tips for a newbie whose trying to get through these games?
I started playing Wizardry I, and this shit is hard as fuck. I'm getting used to navigating the menues, but I'm not always sure what's going on in combat. I'm also getting used to mapping out the dungeon on graph paper.

>What are some "Need to play" dungeon crawlers that I should add to my list?
I've got Wizardry I, II, and III on my list, what else should I add? I'm alright with newer stuff, too. Just any first person dungeon crawlers like these. I've heard them called "Blobbers" as well. But any game where you make a party of adventurers and prowl a dungeon, slaying monsters.

Also, now that I think about it, there are a TON of these games in Japanese that never got released over here. Are there any of them that have been translated?

Wizardy's combat is pretty simple I'm not sure why you're having trouble understanding what's going on. My main piece of advice is every time you enter a new floor, have your mage or bishop or samurai cast "dumapic" so you can see what part of the floor the staircase you entered the floor from is in for mapping purposes. It actually doesn't align with the other floors. i.e. the down stairs from B1 could be located at 10 x, 5 y, but the upstairs on B2 it leads to could be at 2 x, 17 y

What was the first Wizardry game to feature a minimap? That's the one thing I can't get around. I like the highly lethal combat and stuff, but don't really feel like breaking out a pen and paper.

Black Onyx is one the firsts Dungeon crawlers but it gets ignored a lot,The gbc remake could use a translation since it looks interesting also you can kill civillians
>>4640270
All the ones I played had a map spell,Never really needed a pen and paper map in a single Wizardry game I played but I played the Nes,Gbc and Snes remakes

Black Onyx from the sega sg-1000 got a translation not too long ago. This translated rom was also ported to the colecovision and the rom is public

>What was the first Wizardry game to feature a minimap?
Without counting any of the Japanese ports, I believe it's Wizardry 7.

Counting the Japanese ports, I know the PSX version of Wizardry 1 already has mini-map functionality. Maybe the SNES version has it, but I'm too lazy to check.

Bards Tale - Pretty much old wizardry with nicer graphics.

Might and Magic - open world blobber, earlier games have turn based combat akin to wizardry.

Dungeon master - The original real time blobber and best among them.

Those series should occupy you for a while.

It's easier to convert SG-1000 games to the Colecovision than vice versa because the Colecovision has a toolbox ROM with functions the programmer can call while the SG-1000 doesn't. That and games that use the numeric keypad on the Colecovision controller would be problematic because the SG-1000 has a controller more like the NES.

Worst part is how the interrupts are structured on the CV--it ties the VDP interrupt flag to the NMI line which is not how it works on the SG-1000 or MSX. You have to read the VDP status register to acknowledge the NMI, but at the same time you also can't do it while attempting to access any VDP control registers or you'll get a screen full of garbage.

RPGs are one genre the Colecovision really lacks other than Temple to Apshai which isn't really an RPG per se;

This guy is way off when he said there's no Arabian on a Z80 system--not only did the arcade game use a Z80, but there were computer ports on the Spectrum and Amstrad.

There should be a pdf of the Wizardry manual online, it does a very good job explaining how the game works. It's relatively uncomplicated, there's just a lot of options to work with at first.

Hey, does someone have any suggestions for good action-oriented, isometric view dungeon crawlers in the vein of Gauntlet, with a particularly fun 2 player co-op? Thanks!

I'm gonna need same kind of pdf for Dungeon Masters. I got no idea what those little icons mean for example.

Dungeon Explorer, though it's more of a shooter than anything. Has fucking 5 player co-op and is fun as all hell.

The SFC port of Wizardry 1-3 came out in 2000, after the PS1.
5 on the SFC came out in 1992 and should have a DUMAPIC map.
Wizardry Gaiden for the GB in 1991 would be earlier.

Is this the best or at least a good version of Wizardry I-III? I want to get into the series and this version of I-III looked to be pretty good.
