What the hell happened to these threads? Last time I saw them they were on /v/ (despite all the games being /vr/ material) and now they've vanished completely. Some of us were doing them and having fun.

If anyone knows whether some mod made them bannable or some trite crap like that, please let me know.

Traditional OP post follows anyway, in case others wanna be doing this now.
------------------------

Welcome to the Retro Game Gauntlet, gentlemen.
1336433524841

The screen dreaded by most gauntleteers

Start at NES, and work through in the following order:

NES
SNES
GB/GBC OR Sega Game Gear
Megadrive/Genesis
Turbografx16
DOS
NeoGeo
GBA OR Sega Master System
Commodore 64 OR Commodore Amiga
Playstation 1 OR Nintendo 64

You have three days to complete the game without assistance (each game gets three days, though RPGs are allowed a week due to length). Select your system here:

http://s3kr.it/gauntlet.html

You can also do it manually if you don't trust the random number generator:

http://s3kr.it/systems/

AND BRING ME SCREENSHOTS PARKER

Howdy OP. Married father of four, playing when small folks allow. Things i have learned:

>Go house to house
>collect bones in each level to access the next
>they are small and sometimes hard to see
>4 hits = dead
>sleep bar is a timer, runs out and you go to dreamland
>dreamland is tougher, spookier, but you get better abilities then just a punch
>random FREDDY'S tm COMING midboss fights
>level bosses are freddy bits (hand, head and soforth) on ball snakes, so far

It isn't actually as bad as I was first thinking. Does the "chump enemy knocks you in to pit" thing pretty often though...

>what happened to these threads
They died due to lack of interest. People get tired of rolling crap games, and very few people actually feel like subjecting themselves to the crap games.
>well why don't we improve the lists?
Because there's autists who complain and whine and bitch if you even consider removing the shit games from the list since "hur that's part of the challenge!" So we stick with full lists of mostly shovelware, people roll them, say "fuck this" and abandon the gauntlet, and yet another gauntlet thread dies with less than 50 posts and 10 posters.

>> No.4639068

I support this, but if I don't have the console on the list, can I skip to the first one I have?

The last few threads on /v/, nobody seemed to have these problems for some reason. Some poor lad rolled Nobunaga's Ambition for the NES, someone else rolled Genghis Khan 2: Clan of the Grey Wolf or whatever it's called for the SNES, fun was had watching them try to work said games out. About 8 people over the course of 2 days rolled AVGN kusoge (Dick Tracy, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, etc.) and some poverty JRPGs were discovered that ended up being quite fun.

My wife rolled Sweet Home and has been enjoying it greatly.

Yeah, that's usually how it starts. Then the shit I mentioned in my post takes place, and the threads die off. Check the archives if you don't believe me. I wonder why we don't have a "gauntlet redux" sort of thing, where the lists are more curated for shovelware and and like. Maybe limit it to, say, 100 or so titles per console, keep the best, worst, famous and infamous? That way if you want the raw core, go original flavor, if you want something else, go redux. Would that work, maybe?

Also, i'm the Nightmare on Elm Street guy. No screenshots at the moment, sitting on six game overs, but getting better. Amusingly, my teenage daughter has show interest in this crap, and being that she's better then me at various retro games, might give this a try. That's a really good idea, in my view. As long as the original lists are available too!

Also good, your daughter is on the right path. Progress-boosting off of others is a SIN.

>>4640873

I'm trying, but I feel like the penalty for death is so harsh in this game because the patterns are brutal! I'm not really a shmups guy, my biggest achievement in the genre was 1CC-ing Perfect Cherry Blossom. How I wish the slower movement speed was bound to holding a button like in that game... the Select pushing really throws me off, especially with the HUD absent during boss battles.

A big problem of mine is that even on the slowest move speed I find it hard to follow the middle of the Stage 1 boss without dying. If I go into Stage 2 devoid of powerups it becomes a desperate scramble.

Furthest I've made it is the Stage 2 boss so far.

>> No.4640985

I can tell you exactly what happened.

Skips, going back a console instead of restarting, and people straight up ignoring rules and rolls because they didn't like them ruined the tension that the gauntlet structure provided.

All that, combined with people either absolutely flooding the thread with far too many screenshots per game, going in the opposite direction and only posting completion notices, and only talking about the games they were playing instead of discussing the thread's games in general killed engagement.

The end result was a split thread, with some people wanting adherence to the original rules and berating the "I just want to have fun" types for needing a hugbox, and the fun-folk railing against stick-in-the-mud old guard.

That having been said, I used to have a lot of fun going through and beating the games people broke rules on to skip/reroll.

Post an ending screen, generally. As for screen frequency, if you hit major events, like an insanely hard boss, or after you've died in the same goddamn place hundreds of times. Maybe one or two more when you start and stop if you play in blocks as well.

As for worth, it comes down to you, really. Are you the kind of person that finds personal reward and accomplishment after beating a game, or even a section of a game, and doing so on your own merits and experience? Then it's worth it with or without the thread, the thread is more for banter and checking in, like your friends on the couch behind yours in the basement, dicking about on another game as you work on yours.

Someone should really clean up the lists for the Gauntlet.

The list includes so many games that are straight up chore and boring shit to play. Not because it's difficult or anything, just time confusing. It's not fun to talk about or play, what's the point when it's even devoid of any challenge?

Gauntlet is a fun idea but it needs to get some work done. There's a good reason these threads always die out.

I lied, freddy's house is long as shit. The ninja is hilariously useful, the only ability with any kind of moving attack, and makes the various "bounce around the screen" bosses chumps. Things I have issue with:

>first three levels are the same, but the house you enter to get there can change
>the entryway into the levels from the street area is INSANELY touchy and frustrating
>attacks will sometimes randomly deny you invincibility frames and hit you 2-3 times instantly
>avoiding various enemies is a better idea then fighting 80% of the time, unless you're in an enclosed space or small ledge with homing enemies

I think doing so will split up an already very small community. 4chan in general, especially /vr/, has a very elitistic community and creating two different lists will create a toxic community based on that. Based on trying to make this more popular I think it's better to keep it to one list to keep us more united and relatable discussion.

Honestly I think the Gauntlet would be a lot popular if it was some kind of yearly event or something. I can honestly imagine being a big hit on Twitch.

Don't quite understand the darkness mechanic. A torch costs 5gp, but you have to go into your commands to use it every step you take. When you do, it marks the area you're in on your map, but once it goes dark you can't use your map anymore. It becomes "Useless Item" after using it about 5 times. I feel I'm not using it right.

Or visit a temple and keep making donations until you are blessed, which gives 500 units of light in Might and Magic 2, might be the same for M&M1. Until then, once you hit darkness just use your torch until it dies, and you'll have 5 units of light to work with at a time.

I think it's better to have a small community rather then no community. There's been zero threads for the gauntlet in months, even if there's a clash, it's better then nothing. And i'm sure you're right, but it seems speedrunning is in vogue at the moment, plus speaking of toxic community...

I'd rather a small, if slightly fractured community that can make periodic comfy threads. The gauntlet is there, but in total honesty it's a retread of the /v/ gauntlet. If an additional list helps bring life to a not toxic, but nearly dead community, all the better. One man's opinion, anyway.

This. The autists complained about editing the lists, and the Gauntlet died. Let's stop listening to the 1CC-I AM HARDCORE GAMER, BAD GAMES ARE PART OF THE FUN autists, and clean the lists up to attract people.

Well they are some pretty nasty dudes.
This game is really basic, even by beat'em'up standards. You have one punch and one kick, with a jumping and crouching version of each. Outside very specific circumstances, you will always use the standing kick because it has the best range and the fastest hitbox. The standing punch doesn't knock enemies back so you can hit them repeatedly, so that's good against non-boss enemies that take more than one hit, but the first boss in the game can be stunlocked by getting him in a corner and spamming kick, the second boss can be beaten by crouching under their (always jumping) attack and then kicking them, the third and fourth bosses both get stunlocked by alternating punches and kicks to break their blocking AI (but always do kick first so you can guarantee you interrupt the boss's attack, punch is slow and doesn't always connect in time), there are some motorbike enemies on Stage 3 that can only be beaten with a jumping kick, and the final boss seems to only be damaged by jumping kicks, every other fucking move just phased through him. There are like five types of non-boss enemies and half of them share the same AI and just do different damage. There are only five stages in the game, too. I probably would have beaten it in ten minutes if I didn't insist on making it a 1cc as it's an arcade port, it's just very easy to manipulate due to the simple AI and sparse move list. I wouldn't recommend it, unless the arcade version was just a lot better than the TG16 port.
>>4641976
Most people don't care about FF3 because we didn't get it in the west until the Nintendo DS era. FF5 might've gotten shafted but at least it appeared on GBA and PS1. People just don't have nostalgia for it and few people are going to try it out unless they've played other FF games, including probably 5 which is admittedly a better version of 3's main feature, but that doesn't make 3 bad in the slightest, it's just older and less polished.

Final Fantasy 3 is the single-best RPG on the NES. Granted that might not seem so impressive when 4th and 5th Gen had so many stellar RPGs, but the amount of shit they crammed into that cartridge is nothing short of awe-inspiring. I was playing through the FF games in order (still haven't gotten to 7 because I don't like PS1 emulation and fiddling with plug-ins), and seeing how much 3 progressed compared to the first two blew my mind and destroyed my penis. The floating continent is pretty much about the size of the first two game maps, and then you get off it and there's just this giant sea of nothingness while melancholic music plays and you get lost, until you find a tiny island and get the next plot hook and realize the game's basically just begun.
In fact, if I were to rate the mainline FF games I've played, they'd go 5 > 6 > 3 > 1 > 4 > 2 and I don't think "it's not as good as Final Fantasy 5 or 6" is that scathing a criticism.
And I liked the final dungeon, both how insanely big it is, the fact that there's another optional large dungeon tucked away inside it, and the boss rush at the end. The only actually unenjoyable part of FF3 to me was Garuda.

I would say Dragon Quest 3 was superior, but I do agree that FF3 is underrated compared to 1 or 4. It's basically 1's spell system made more generous with a somewhat janky job system. Not as good of a job system as 5, but it was interesting.

The problem comes from the job system, and how the game seems a bit like a first draft. You spend what, 33% of the game with the first batch of jobs? Then you get a bunch of also-ran jobs with the physical job upgrades, and then misc classes until near the end when they give you the magic job upgrades RIGHT before they give you the two ultimate classes. There's almost no reason to switch to those two prior classes, since you lose all your job level bonuses and you'll be able to upgrade even more in just a little longer. Thus you can either run with the same opening jobs for your magic users until endgame, or you can switch and spend even more time grinding to get them back up to speed, just to do it again when you get Sage and Ninja. Why they decided to leave you with a handful of classes for nearly half the game, I can't imagine. It wouldn't be a huge issue if you didn't lose all progress in a job whenever you switch, but that mechanic makes experimentation with classes a complete waste of time. Who cares if one class kicks ass against a certain boss, when you'd have to cripple your team just to switch for that battle?

That weird lack of balance and jerky progression is also visible with the airships. You get two later in the game, and have to switch between them depending on where you are going, since the final airship being capable of all didn't come up in development? And the level design is beyond bland. The entire final dungeon can be described as "1-tile wide path, some turns". The dungeons felt like placeholders they put there and planned on coming back to work on. And the areas where you need to be Frog'd or Mini'd is just a kick in the dick to anyone trying to playthrough without magic users.

Alright, I admittedly forgot those existed, that was a shitty part of the game. I still haven't played DQ3 either, only the first two, so I suppose if nothing else I have something to look forward to when I get around to it.

>> No.4642179

>>4642156
DQ1 was acceptable when it came out, trash since the second game. The second game is just a bitch. Don't get me started on The Cave to Rhone and everything past it. But DQ3 is a damn fine RPG where you can configure 3 out of 4 people in your team any which way you wish, and re-class them once they hit level 20 and you've reached the temple of Dhama. You can reclass your Cleric into a Wizard, and he'll keep all his white magic spells, or level a Wizard up to get all his spells, then reclass him into a Knight so you have a tank who can use black magic. You also get a dragon to ride for traveling. Shit is cash.

If it wasn't for FF3's weird balance/first draft nature, I'd consider it superior to DQ3. But I gotta admit DQ3 feels a lot more polished, and the class system isn't quite as limiting as FF3's. As it is, I feel FF3 is the second best NES RPG. FF1 and 2, and DQ1 and 2 don't come close.

I would recommend it over FF1 or FF2, since it's a bit less wonky than those two. FF1 has an interesting plotline, and it was impressive for the time, but it's bugged and glitched to shit, and the DnD expy magic system doesn't do it any favors. FF2 is weird and experimental, ymmv. While FF3 does lack polish, it's still decent fun and worth playing. I'm sure some purists and fans of the first two games would disagree with me, but this is my opinion as someone who had played FF1 back then, and FF3 only recently.

Complaining time.

See this guy? Well fuck him and his wildly flailing arms. They are literally unpredictable, and you can only hurt him by hitting him in the center. He kills you so fucking fast its unreal. And the best thing is he is on level 19 which takes you at least 20 minutes to reach. And if you lose all your life you get dumped to the starting screen, all over again.
I actually managed to kill him once but I was on 0 lives, and of course I got ass fucked in the incredibly hard level after. But even better thing is, turns out this game has 39 levels, which means I barely passed the middle. I'm doubtful I will manage to beat this one, matter of fact I'm sure I won't be able. This is probably the most serious focus I've ever put into a shmup. Not usually my genre. Really enjoying this one but it's a very, very mean-spirited game.

I've decided that I'm going to settle for beating the 4 "normal mode" stages and leave the 7 "hard mode" ones alone for the purpose of this gauntlet. My defense on this matter is that hard mode is fucking hidden and requires a soft reset on the ending screen.

Honestly, I'll probably return and try my hand at hard mode later. This game's rather charmed me.

Okay so this game can actually be cheesed, and I think it'd be impossible to get this high score without cheesing it.
Powerups drop when you hit the lowest block on any column. That of course means you don't want the ball to jump up above the blocks and hit them rapidly, but instead keep it low so you can grab as many drops as you can. Any power-up that isn't an increase/decrease in lives replaces the last one when grabbed (and grabbing a life also removes the last one) and most powerups give about 200 points. Negative pickups, however, give 2000 points each. Because the negative effect goes away as soon as you grab another powerup, these are the most desirable pickups.
Now let's talk about level design. As said above, you want to hit the lowest blocks. The first two stages (second one not so much because there's a big open gap on the right side) are good for getting a lot of powerups this way, while Stage 3 and beyond have unbreakable blocks around the bottom. These blocks count as the "lowest" so any block above them can never give any power-up, and some stages will have almost zero power-ups as a result despite the increased difficulty. Fortunately, however, one of the negative power-ups is "go to the last stage you were on" and getting it on the first stage restarts it.
I think you can guess the strategy from here. Playing slowly, grabbing every negative power-up, AVOIDING good power-ups that would complete the stage faster (like ones that make the ball ignore collision or move you forward a stage), and looking for the red X power-up that moves you back one stage so you can play it indefinitely. You also get more life pickups this way due to the increase in total drops, meaning you last much farther than if you tried playing the game legit. Man, Dino Riki is genuinely tough. Still haven't been able to make it past level 3. It has that Gradius syndrome where losing powerups screws you over really bad at certain points, which wouldn't be so bad if there weren't instant death pits around those very spots.
Not sure how many levels there are, the manual's plot says your mission is to kill a Tyrannosaurus (the stage 2 boss), a Pteranodon (the stage 1 boss), a Monster Fly and a Giant Cobra, but the enemy section of the manual adds a Triceratops to the list as well.

>> No.4643573

>>4643565
Oh, and here's a really annoying design flaw: When you get hit Riki will start flashing and be invincible for a short period. However, his life bar will not go down until AFTER this invincibility period ends. As a result, if you get hit and then take a quick look at the life bar to see how many hits you have left, it will display one heart more than you actually have.
Terrible design.

>> No.4643589

Gotta say I like that the plot is literally just "Riki sets off to beat the hell out of a bunch of dinosaurs because he wants to prove that man is superior", though.

Final update for today.
I think I'm approaching the end of the game. I arrived at my childhood home to find it burnt to the ground with only one survivor, who then told me that the demon lord has the other 3 rings of power and that the time for us to fight is nigh. According to the world map I have only one more town to visit before I hit the villain's castle so final boss fight should be coming up soon.

Before he died however he transmitted coordinates to a science base at the edge of the mapped galaxy, implying we would find answers there.

I really like the fact that you can do research before travelling such as looking up the facility at those coordinates and even getting dossiers on notable staff. Oddly enough the captain who warned us isn't coming up on any records.

Your characters level up separately, each needing a 100 crystals to go up a level, which rises your HP and attack. Every point in the map is a mini stage that has several drops of health refills, a single crystal and a large crystal that counts for 10. It takes a while to get one of your characters up a level, two is a chore.

And you have to level up.

Everytime you defeat a boss, all enemies go up a level, also having more health and attack. If you don't grind enough in the beginning, you're going to have a tough time farther in the game.

I'm done with it for today. I'll give it a shot tomorrow.

Aaaaah, you seem to be having fun with it, I'm so glad! And yeah, sadly playing THE CHAD CAPTAIN sometimes results in a suboptimal mission score. You can get away with SOME Chaddery though since, well, you're fucking Kirk.

My memory of which missions are in this and which missions are in 25th Anniversary is hazy - Judgment Rites is essentially the sequel to 25th in that it uses the same exact engine and everything, just has a new set of missions and some cool new stuff like redshirts and combat improvements.

Also figured out this spot is actually really easy - if you wait in the area where you get the wings until the enemies are gone, you can grab the wings and walk to this spot, then hang out here until the other side comes into view, then make a quick flight over to the other side, minimizing the enemies that can knock you out of the air to almost nothing.
It requires you to make two jumps at the end of the level, but they're fairly easy. MUCH less riskier than having to risk getting hit in the air over a pit and falling.

Making progress in BN 5 and honestly so far it’s, uh, kinda shit.

Asset and enemy recycling is rampant to the point that it feels like a so-so romhack as opposed to an official BN sequel. And that’s saying something given that asset recycling was everywhere in 2 and 3 as well. The map I’m on right now is supposed to be an abandoned island but they clearly just reused the campground from 1 and just moved things around.

Also it feels rushed as hell at times, especially evident when bosses have no buildup whatsoever as opposed to the older ones where they got to at least heel out and show off their gimmick a bit before getting slapped down by Megaman and pals.

The gameplay is still strong enough to carry it but my god if I had played any of the others recently I would have burnt out immediately on this one.

You won't beat it. Not without a guide/walkthrough, and that's against the rules. There is no way you will possibly locate the water crest without one, since the only hint to it's location is easily one of the best hidden secrets in the game. There was a game where you play as a mutant combination of Rayman and Brock Lesnar where you go on a rampage against crystal orks to save your waifu, and on top of that you grapple everything like Los Tiburon and rip fully aged trees out of the ground to use as a club before throwing them into swaths of enemies.

Well I only beat the first chapter and this is already my favorite game in the entire gauntlet so far.

Changes for the /vr/ Gauntlet v2:

1.) Lets fix the fucking OP. GBA has no place on /vr/'s gauntlet list. Get rid of the OR's or balance them properly, it's lopsided to have people play NES then SNES, then Genesis and have the choice between the Master System or another Nintendo console. Also, unless we are going to go full retro PC's, can we pull DOS, Amiga, and the C64 off of there? I love retro PC gaming, but it is a bit more complicated to get setup and working properly, which makes the Gauntlet lose a bit of the pick-up-and-play aspect. And if we ARE going to go with stuff that can be harder to get into, like the Amiga, then why the hell isn't MAME on the list?

2.) Lets either get two sets of lists going, or at least one list that isn't just "Everything including unbeatable and unplayable shit LOL!" And before one of the autismo's wants to play the "B-b-b-but that's how the gauntlet is supposed to be!" card, by all means look through this very thread and see the number of people who quickly abandoned shit games. Shit games bore people, and that's why the last Gauntlet thread in Aug 2017 died off fast.

Games that should be removed from the lists:
>Unplayable/Unwinnable or High Score goal games.
No one has given a shit about beating "the high score" since 2014-ish, since no one ever bothers to upload their high score anywhere. People were supposed to upload scores to the Wiki, but no one ever did, so they basically became "play until you die, move to next game". And shit like Action 52 or any other multicart shouldn't even be there.
>Edutainment games
Don't get me wrong, I got nostalgia for a few edutainment games, but they have no place in the Gauntlet.
>Japanese games that lack translation
This should be self-explanatory.
