The story of Yamamoto is weird.
The stuff he supposedly plagiarized isn't even note-by-note the same stuff. A lot of the times it feels more like influence, rather than straight rip off.
Also, it was Yamamoto himself who came out and admitted he was plagiarizing, but again, it seems kind of like an exaggeration.
To this day I'm puzzled.
There's a lot of other video game music that sounds EXACTLY like other music (Yuzo Koshiro has lots of this), but nobody makes a big deal out of it.

The question remains, why nobody pointed at Yuzo Koshiro (love him, and I think his forte is being a sound engineer, rather than a composer, same as Yamamoto).
Yamamoto got crucified for being a thief, when in reality, when you listen to this >>4643473, the resemblance is obviously there but it's not what I'd actually call a ripoff, the songs are different enough, especially the melody.

Whereas yamamoto persisted, for a long time, and into anime also. He got crucified more for this than for 16bit stuff, that was more a retrospect thing.

Yeah, from what I've seen, most controversial stuff seem to be from the 6th gen games onwards.
But I still think the whole drama is a bit blown up out of proportion. I was just checking some DBZ forum thread about this, and people just started looking for really farfetched similarities with songs, like actively trying to find similar songs to Yamamoto's stuff. If you try hard enough, you will always find similar songs, it's actually hard to find a completely unique chord progression or melody.
But anyway, this thread is about arrangementes, and that's where Yamamoto's expertise lies. Guy wasn't the original composer of Cha-La Head-Cha-La, but he's the original arranger. Guy is a legend, despite what anyone says.
