If you want a smoother progression without having to farm (or farm much), go Holy Shock. You will deal tremendous elemental damage even when swinging a crappy weapon, and all you care for is being able to hit enemies (Blessed Aim mercs, Angelic set help) and hitting really fast, so fast weapons are your forte (look for Crushing Blow, IAS, and maybe some multi-elemental damage to help deal with immunes later in the game).

If you want a traditional physical Zealot with Fanaticism, you have a rockier road ahead, but even if you find nothing good, you can still upgrade some of the solid Normal or Nightmare uniques (Butcher's Pupil, Bloodletter), spam blacksmith vistis until they sell you a Cruel (+300% Damage) weapon, or even save all Chipped gems and try to roll a weapon yourself with the recipe. Check every single good rare weapon because even a Normal weapon can drop some sick rare mods like 250-300% ED and that'd already be worth upping in the Cube. Physical Zealot is doable (very doable with a single point in Vengeance and a solid weapon), just might have a rougher road.
>Which items should I look for and where
I advise you to just play the game and not backtrack until you hit a roadblock, you can find runes / items organically. Identify all magic and rare weapon and check blacksmiths often, physical characters live and die by their weapon and you want a lot of ED% on a good, speedy one-hander. Especially on Normal there's no point in running anything except maybe Countess for some runewords, but you are set on that front. Nightmare and Hell, you might want to stay a bit longer on Andariel, Countess or Mephisto, or just run Baal a lot. Cows can drop a lot of runes, gems and Exceptional/Elite plain items. Otherwise, just play the game, sell shit that's worth a lot of gold (plain javelins, rings, amulets, plain heavy armor, sorc/necro items) and use the gold to gamble circlets, gloves, boots or to merchant-run.

You are on Single Player. Generally a lot of poeple play Single Player with the mod that lets you use Battle.net Ladder Runewords. If you don't, you're not missing out *that* much, but if you do, there's a patch out there and it's easily installed and doesn't fuck up saves. Runewords you want:
>Strength = Amn + Tir on a weapon
Poor Man's CB source.
>Black = Thul + Io + Nef on a weapon
Put it on a Knout when you hit Nightmare. Io can take a bit of NM Countess farming or just can be found off the ground sometimes. Another CB weapon.
>Ancient's Pledge = Ral + Ort + Tal on shield
The game literally tells you how to make it in Act 5. Good resistance source on a Pally shield.
>Rhyme = Shael + Eth on Shield.
Grants Cannot Be Frozen and a lot of useful stuff that adds up to a solid item.

All of the above are cookie-cutter non-ladder runewords a Zealot can use and that require fairly low level stuff. When you get to Hell difficulty, a Holy Shock Zealot can also benefit from Crescent Moon (Shael + Um + Tir) weapon runeword, the only expensive / rare thing to find here is the Um rune; Physical Zealots don't have nearly as convenient late game runewords, but they do benefit a lot from the aforementioned vendorable 300% ED weapons if they find nothing else.

Any of you guys ever played the Diablo II mod 'Back to Hellfire'? Its pretty fucking awesome if you're a fan of Diablo 1. It combines Diablo 1 and 2 into one game, basically - recreated Diablo 1 and Hellfire in the Diablo II engine but uses actual Diablo 1 assets - and then continues with the Diablo 2 story after you finish the D1 acts, but its changed up from vanilla as well. It even includes the Diablo 1 classes, although the sorcerer model from D1 looks pretty janky in D2 and just uses the sped up walk cycle from Hellfire for running.

HIGHLY recommended for D1 fans.

PlugY. For SP, get it and get it now.
In addition to the enabling of ladder-only runewords, all its other features you don't want to live without once you try it!
There's shared stash, practically infinite stash space, item level shown on items, two more pages for the character sheet showing pretty much ALL bonuses from MF to elemental absorption, free respeccing at will (if you're into that sort of thing), etc.

Skills are kind of an issue. My intention is to go for a Zealoter that uses Fanaticism, but being a high-level skill is kind of an issue because I have to depend on some other problematic skills while I reach Lv30. Sacrifice was my main attack source but I had to stop using it because it destroys me before the enemies actually get a chance.

I'm going to run Andariel on Players8 for a while to see if I can get something interesting.

The standard-issue way of rushing Normal with a Paladin is to max out Holy Fire (or even Holy Freeze if you're already past level 18) and respec once you hit either level 30 or Nightmare.

I don't know why I never thought about it, but I just tried and using Sacrifice along Prayer and the Malice Flail seems to be working just fine. Gonna do a couple of runs killing Bloody Raven, Rakanishu, Griswold, Countess and Smith before starting to do Andy Runs. Wish me luck.

In Act 2 I just rushed to get the Horadric Cube because it has a ton of space with the GigaInventory Mod and that's pretty much it.

Now that I think about it, charms are another topic I'd want to get into. Which charms are a must for a Fanaticism Zealodin?
Right now, all of those in the picture, are charms that give health, dexterity, + max. resistances, attack rating and poison damage and a single one that gives fire resistance because I forgot to put it in the stash.

I think the d1 sorcerer only uses d1 spells but they have been tweaked to suit play in D2. Not 100% on that though, its been a while since I played it.

So, what's the general concensus on Countess runs? Totally pointless for rune hunting nowadays (i.e. 1.13)?
Better off doing The Pit or Lower Kurast chests? Cows?

Pic related - every single rune drop from running the Countess 40 times. Among those are a handful of runes from killing the occasional particularly interesting-looking and quickly killable mob (e.g. Wraiths) along the way.
Noteworthy drops:
Mal, Pul, Lem, Fal, Ko, Lum x3.
Ran with a lightning sorc. Decent Forgotten Tower map atm (though could be better), average run time from pressing 'h' on difficulty selection to hitting 'save & quit' is around 40 to 45 seconds.

Its not pointless since you get guaranted rune drops generally low-mid tier you either use for crafting, low mid tier runewords or just cubing them up to form HR in future. Keep in mind its best to run countess on /p1. There are also few armor/weapon racks along the way that can drop something interesting even unique item.

Countess runs are always good if you are bored of running things you listed. Lately i got IO and 2x lums from 9 runs from her not bad but i never expect to get anything really high.

Yeah, I'm doing my Countess running on /players 1 to maximize the rune drops.
And same here, I go down the tower ruins not expecting high drops, but consider those a nice bonus if they do happen. She's supposedly capable of dropping runes up to Lo on hell, but that Mal is about the highest I've gotten myself (IIRC, I might have seen an Ist drop once...). Ko feels like a certain cut off point past which the drop chances really start decreasing.

Yeah, that comes from her unique dual item drop behavior, consisting of a regular item drop and a special rune drop. When run on /players 1, the chances of her dropping non-rune items from the regular item drop are the lowest, hence increasing the chances of her dropping more runes from the special rune drop.

The key, IIRC from my d2jsp days, is just to find an eth armor with a high roll on the base defense score. Superior +ED armors always have this maximum roll on their base defense value but won't work in the cube. Perfect non-super eth sacred armor is 600 -> 900 def, then bugs to 1200.

Yeah, definitely go with PlugY for single player. The amount of sheer convenience tweaks it brings is so big you don't want to go without after trying it once.
The infinite stash space + shared stash for item transfers between characters, all runewords available, rune transmuting beyond Dol, killing Cow King not closing cow level, item levels shown on items, unrestricted respeccing any time you like, 2 extra pages for the character screen showing pretty much all the data, etc.

In the years since I moved to single player, I have done maybe 50 hours of hard running LK and have found a Sur rune. That's it.

Now you've been posting all kinds of rune drops every few hours and I'm thinking this is really fucked up. So I config 3 sorcs up for LK and turn them loose botting LK overnight, and an entire god damn infinity drops, pic related. I don't know whether I should keep it. It's very tempting.

I just wish I could find this stuff on my own. To get vex runes like in your pic, I classic-rush three games full of mules to hellforge and cube the guls and ists. Takes about 6 hours I guess; also made an Ohm that way, which took about 18 hours. Have to do it that way since vexes and ohms don't appear for me. Total horseshit.

What say you: best places to farm chipped gems in SP?
Got a metric fuckton of Thuls and Amns but strapped for chipped gems to cube them. It would obviously be normal difficulty, to minimize the chances of non-chipped gems dropping, but what would you think are the best spots? Cow level's got good numbers of enemies present, but the cows like to drop higher tier gems pretty frequently, due to their monster level...

Been doing some Countess running in the last few days. No major jackpots or anything (as one would expect), but nonetheless some pretty decent drops.
Pic related, got a quite good Gheed's fortune drop yesterday! Perfect +MF roll, almost perfect reduced vendor prices, but poor extra gold modifier.
Other than that, aColdkill, Wall of the Eyeless, a couple of Iron Jang Bongs. Nothing that special, or things I didn't have already.

Note: not all runes in pic related are from these last couple of days' runs; it's that's that character's "cubing-up stash screen" and I didn't realize to screenshot the recent drops before dropping them in. Notable recent Countess drops are that Mal, Um, Pul, Fal, and a couple of Kos.

playing d2 for the first time in like 10 years, can someone help me understand some of the ingame terminology? weapons that have things like "+50% damage to undead" or "+x-x [elemental] damage", does that shit apply only when you make a normal physical attack or does it add onto damage dealt through spells or abilities too?

mods can be tested by equipping the item, readying the skill, and seeing if it changes the magnitude on the character sheet (C). +skill is about the only commonly-occuring thing that affects spells though. There is no one-stop source for all documentation related to magic modifiers. And the rules can be complex.

For instance pic related has a shitload of rules. The +302% Enhanced Damage applies to skills/swings that use the weapon's damage rating, and only affects the portion of the attack involving the weapon's physical damage component. "minus x to enemy lightning resistance" affects lightning damage dealt directly by the holder of the weapon; it will affect the chain lightning proc listed there and more importantly if a sorc carries the weapon, her lightning spells will be affected by this mod. If a sin carries the weapon, her traps will not be affected by the mod, because traps are considered a separate actor from the character. It does not break lightning immunities either. But the conviction aura does. Its magnitude will be reduced to 20 percent normal when breaking an immunity. But with the immunity broken, the "minus x to enemy lightning resistance" DOES start working, at full effect. Really simple game, diablo 2.

I'm no good when it comes to games with so many options and especially with minmaxing. Anyone share some fun builds (D1,2 or any other similar game) and how they work? Do these games ever do interesting spell/skill interactions? Do they carry well into late game, and if they don't, then what's the point?

Like in the non-retro PoE I once played for a bit, I only got into it after finding someone's posted build of a Heavy Metal Marauder/Barbarian. Core concept was using a massive AoE hammer that casts a short debuff on striking the enemies; if they die with the debuff on, they explode, carrying the debuff on all those around them while also hurting them bad, resulting in chain reactions of explosions. It really had me gleeful with delight, but barely survived one playthrough before becoming gimped.

you really gotta babysit the merc otherwise he'll get btfo constantly and eat your gold. kite backwards with teleport and attack until the pack is a more reasonable size i.e. until he can fight without constantly losing big chunks of health. make sure he has lots of leech too. tal mask is great for that, stealskull is a cheaper option too. maybe lose some of the mf, you start to get diminishing returns, i feel like anything over 200 or 300 starts to get to that point

definitely a hammerdin, maybe the strongest build in the game, even though it used to be better before being nerfed. max hammer, max concentrate, then i'd say max vigor and split remaining points between holy shield and blessed aim based on what amount of blocking you expect. max block is probably a waste imo but you can get a fair amount. also don't forget to put one point in redemption, it's incredibly useful.

a shout barb might be fun, it's pretty tedious till you get geared up, but it's not very item dependent, i had one in hc sp and it was the only barb i ever finished because most other builds are too item dependent. the most important things to get are just dual spirits and a merc insight. it doesn't do crazy damage but just attacks super fast and does decent aoe so it's good against packs and can mf decently because you have find item and can wear a decent amount of mf gear since you don't have to worry about life or res that much because of bo and natural immunity or whatever. attack rating is totally irrelevant and everything gets permastunned so its very tanky too. could maybe run pits or something with him to build wealth.

In the early days the MSLE's would send out these huge-ass, high-velocity charged bolts in the cardinal directions, bigger and scarier-looking than the regular lightning enchant, which served to just clean out the HC ladder. Blizz is amazing, but it needs all the fucking synergies, so your only realistic backup option is firewall. IMO Blizz is for early-ladder meph farming and tp-ing past CIs.
FOrb is obviously the god skill for multi elements and lets you pick whatever. I've done fine on hell with just CLit 20 and LM 20 and ~9 +skills, in fact I think it's better with shit gear, otherwise your 1 point lightning will do more damage than your maxed CLit.

Be a snowflake and use blade fury. Just know that it has a lot of weird conditions that are never explained anywhere.

Even with a good map roll it takes much longer to reach the entry map than going through the portal, and coming up the stairs from inside, you'll pop up right on Pindle and his minion pack, who can really fuck you up quickly depending on your character. as a Rogue you should be putting almost all of your points into dexterity, and ideally you should have a high enough natural AC from dex that you don't need an AC prefix on your armor in order to not get hit. Naj's plate is certainly a choice armor for spell-heavy Rogues, but really any chain mail or splint mail with resistances and +stats on it will do just fine

Honestly recommend getting the v 1.12 installer floating around the net and putting D2SE on it. Lets you switch versions and use multiple mods without having to copy paste every time you wanna switch.

Eastern Sun changes quite a bit yet still feels like D2 overall. Some of my favorite changes are making Energy actually scale magic, elemental, and summon damage which gives it an actual role instead of the universal dump stat.

If the stock game works fine for you, it isn't essential per se (and PoD adds stuff and tweaks existing content to boot), but like with PlugY, you end up never wanting to play without after trying it once.

And to make matters even worse, even if you manage to fix the stupid Windows/Diablo problem, you come into another problem which shows just how little the PoD developers know about Diablo 2. Why in the fuck do you need a specific version of Diablo 2 for this? It forces you into having 1.13c or d, which makes sense since you obviously need that to play, BUT WHAT IF I JUST WANT TO DOWNLOAD THE FILES? NOPE, fuck you, gotta update your Diablo 2 (but not too far, because now there is 1.14) and hope you don't accidentally create a new "master" Diablo 2 where everything else redirects, inadvertently fucking over your other installed mods.

Yes, that is the power of PoD. Instead of taking 10 seconds to install a mod, it introduces an hour long involved puzzle where you have to figure out the perfect confirmation of files to allow for installation. Truly the thinking man's game. A shame the actual mod is bland: the skills are either vanilla with no changes, very mild changes or "new" skills that are basically just vanilla skills.
