MK9 is way better than X because it doesn't have those shitty background interaction elements and feels like clunky, there's a lot more colour to it too instead of all shitty dark browns. The story mode is actually really fun and well-written until it shits the bed in the last chapter as opposed to MKXL which is up there with MVCI as the worst story mode in a fighting game. It also has a far more complete and bigger roster whereas MKXL just crams in horror movie icons.

I think MK9 also had a lot more secrets, especially in dat krypt. Even the challenge tower was fun!

While all the animal looked bad in MK3 the “new characters” in Trilogy animals were the worst, just the fucking worst and the animations were child like color crayon.

Scorpion was a penguin and Cage was a Kangaroo. If you get a chance look them up, the animation was sooooooooooo it if place it was done in under 3 seconds.

Ultimate Mk3 in the arcade wa the high point of graphics and sound. MK trilogy for the N64 was the high point for gameplay.

MK2 was great when it came out but MK3 was better simply because of the run mechanic and combos. MK2 is horribly slow. Compare it to trilogy on N64 and it’s no contest as to which one is he most playable.

This, I hadn’t played an MK game since Ultimate 3 when MK(9) came out in 2011, and it was a legitimately great fighting game. So great I thought “maybe I really was missing out all these years”, so I went and played 4, Shaolin Monks and Armageddon. And they were all awful.
X was okay but 9 is still he standard bearer for the series imo

Yeah, except it copies the basic SFII fundamentals of 2D fighting games. Except it really clunky ways. Commands don't work in a fluid manner. To perform a basic projectile with you kang you don't do a qcf in a swift movement, you have to input each directional, and diagonals don't matter.
It's a charming franchise because of the characters, lore and most of all the violence and the digitalized photorealistic graphics that made MK stand out.
It's not original enough to not be included under the SFII school, but it didn't improve on it and in fact made controls worse. It's still not a bad game, a bad game is I would say rise of the robots. MK games are fine, definitely playable, but I don't see how anyone would prefer this to any capcom or snk game. Or eveb other lesser known fighters like yu yu hakusho or gundam endless duel play a lot better than MK

Not really. Each character has the same hitboxes, trades don't exist, way more characters have projectiles.

MK was an answer to SF2, yes, but it became its own beast due to a lot of the design choices. Fatal Fury has more in common with SF2.

Fatal Fury actually went further and implemented the plane-switching mechanic, as well as desperation attacks (a much better and gameplay-focused element than fatalities). FF also went further with grab mechanics and commands, while swift like in SF, are still different enough to make FF and KoF games have their own distinct commands.
