You can take lillypad plugin from pcsx2, put it into ePsxe or pcsxr.
Lillypad has very nice deadzone and anti deadzone adjustments which works wonder with games like Crash Team Racing or Gran Turismo.
You can select necgon from the plugin menu and bind your controller to axis and analog input.

After this, all those games that didnt support analog like first wipeouts or ridge racers, can be played with analog input and games that had shitty analog support like GT2, can be played with no fucking deadzone.

In case of ridge racer, you have to open in game controller menu and press start, then you get to chose maximum and minimum input limits, otherwise analog input will be twitchy as fuck.

Since I´m not a hardcore simulation fan I liked the fun in intuitve gameplay a lot. Also the graphics were kind of good back in the day.

Last but not least we played it via LAN against each other lots of times.

Another good racer from the time is "Moto Racer"... for the very same reasons!

You might get similar FPS on a faster Amiga with the same patch(es) to unlock the frame rate.

But you're right, I first played that game on a vanilla Amiga 500 too and the frame rate was usually somewhere below 15 fps. But just like many of those vector graphics games it run much better on later Amiga models. Even my unaccelerated A1200 run the game much better thanks to it's processor cache that was very beneficial for that kind of early 3D graphics (and double the CPU speed of 14 MHz also was a huge factor).

Shame there's so little Racing romhacks. Imagine some creative tracks, and compilations people could make.

Gran Turismo or Wipeout wouuld be great as romhacks.

Wipeout has really specific proprietary file formats where people just now know how to read and making a track layout and scenery takes a lot of time
same with Gran Autimso

I grew up playing racing games. Some of my favorites were

NFS: High Stakes
NFS: Porsche Unleashed
NASCAR Racing 4
NASCAR Rumble
Destruction Racer
Twisted Metal Black
Test Drive: Eve of Destruction

Few other demo derby games I can't remember the titles of. And I had this one other game on PC I only played a few times because it was kind of buggy I think but it let you design your own car which was sick.

Not retro, but you guys should really really check out Ridge Racer 2 on PSP. It's a compilation/remake of all the good RR games off the PS1.
It has tons of tracks from R4, Rage Racer and even some arcade only Rave Racer tracks are thrown in, all at silky smooth 60 FPS. The original soundtrack is a killer too, has a track by the katamari guy and loads of remixes of the old tracks by the original composers.
Oh and it also has tons of music from R4 (yes, even the pac-man one). Grab ppsspp and the rom and go nuts muh niggas.

I'm not a fan of racers. They've always felt a little boring to me.

I'd go with Demolition Racer over that.

I'm not much into racing specifically. Carmageddon 2 is my favorite game with cars and racing, but I've never actually participated in the race itself. I think I probably had the most fun with the Tokyo Extreme or Rush series in terms of just racing.

Your bad son, racing is one of the finest things that ever happened to gaming. The two just mesh well together.

I'm enjoying Wipeout 3 SE right now and while it's absolutely great, the soundtrack is a disappointment.

Oh boy. I just heard so much about it, being great and licensed from popular UK artists, but then again, I had also heard that the third one was step down as the didn't get the artists. And yeah, listen to WO1 right now, I enjoy that more. Not that I didn't enjoy SE, just not a lot.
And don't think it holds up against 1, Ghost in the Shelll or Ridge Racer. >>4649145
