Super Smash Bros Melee
When you know what you’re doing it jfeels really really good to just move your character around, and that’s what I look for most out of a game. It’s easy to change the game’s options to suit your mood, so it’s a game I can play with friends while goofing, with friends who like to play serious, I can do training on my own or just go through a singleplayer mode for fun. Don’t play it too often these days but it’s a game I can always go back to. Used to resent tourneyshit like l-canceling and wavedashes, but now I like them for making movement more fun, making the game faster, and for just adding another layer of mechanics for me to focus on.

If we’re talking /vr/ only then I don’t know. Maybe Mischief Makers or Metal Slug X.

My favorite retro game is System Shock 1 but my favorite game overall is Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey

For System Shock 1 while it's combat is relatively simple fps fare it just floors me with its atmosphere and its overall aesthetic is so appealing to me that I just never tire of it. I'll be honest though, even I can't defend those controls, mods are essential in my opinion if you want to play it today. I'm sorry but I just can't get into that original control scheme.

At this point it's probably Dawn of War 1: Dark Crusade/Soulstorm
It's just an excellent RTS with a huge number of different factions, units, maps, game modes, community mods alongside some smart game mechanics (resource gathering is dependent on map control AND takes into account how long you've held certain areas/generators), good voice acting and a long campaign. Pretty much perfect, it's a real shame that it still hasn't been surpassed

I'll add to what I posted last night. Doom is kind of like a shmup in a way. Being able to pick it up and play instantly is one of the draws. No one needs a lengthy tutorial to play. It's simple, yet if you want to, you can "git gud" or play at higher levels.

The pick up and play for 5 minutes or several hours is nice and probably has a lot to do with it's popularity. I'd say study or play a few shmups to see the similarities.

I guess it's kind of like a fps that's boiled down to it's basics without a lot of fluff.

Jagged Alliance 2

It's the perfect sequel that improved upon everything the first did, and then went 200% beyond. Incredible depth and variety, and imho the pinnacle of turned based strategy games. Fantastic setting and tone, very easy to immerse yourself in. Lots of custom options, and a n overwhelmingly awesome modding community that made an already great game legendary. And oh my God the gun porn...

I'm probably going to reinstall before the end of the week now.

it's by far the game i have played the most in my life, so it'svery nostalgic and comfy, but also still extremely fun. Megaman was in my youth kinda like Sonic was for a lot of kids, I think. (watched the cartoon, played all the games, actually drew fancomics, etc)

im a big fan of the series, i used to watch my older bro play this game alot, and i stole (i mean, he lived downstairs so he could have just walked up into my room and taken it back) his resident evil 1 game and fell in love with it, when my mom pressured him into handing down his 64 because i was being a whiny brat, i fell in love with the 64, at the same time he gave me his dreamcast too, with CV. i felt that it was the best route taken for the re franchise, its updated visuals, the camera movements, i didnt mind steve as much as everyone else, and the locations specifically i think were the most detailed and, well, just great!

cant elaborate too much on a favored piece of nostaliga, and a longing to have any connection with my older brother. whom i dont see very often at all anymore. code veronica reminds me of him.

>Have you played any other bofs?
Sorta. I got a decent way through the first one but realized it was pretty generic as fuck. Sometimes I visit the semi-regular BoF threads here and without looking at spoilers, get a gist of the rest of the games and how they were like. I like BoF: Dragon Quarter mostly because it's a dungeon crawler of sorts and those are my favorite sorts of games. You really get a good sense of atmosphere from the oppressive, fucked-up environment that incarnation of Ryu and Nina are living in from the dialogue and the actual art style it self and it compliments the game immensely. I also appreciate the new take on the actual mechanics in order to up the difficulty so that dying itself was a necessary mechanic in order to beat the game and how the devs wanted to try something different after BoF 4 was so easy. It really reminds me of the experimentation of the SNES through the mid PS2 era when it came to many game genres and how unfortunately that type of shit isn't possible anymore due to the rise of AAA gaming.

/vr/ Favorite is either Puyo Puyo or Diablo 1
Non/vr/ would be either Pikmin or Mass Effect 1

I love puyo puyo because it's incredibly satisfying to get chains. I love it so much I still have fun while getting ass raped by japs online

Diablo 1 captures a feeling of openness that the later games in the series lack. It's raw fun combat, cool graphics and sound, and exciting loot hunting.

The original Pikmin has phenomenal music and atmosphere. It manages to feel horribly alone despite you having hundreds of Pikmin to do your bidding. The control is somehow perfect and the combat is incredibly fun once you get used to it. The first one has such a mysterious vibe that got lost in the other games.

ME1 is totally not vr in any way, but it has a depth to it that the later games lost.

-controls wonderfully
- music really hits the spot.
- played the levels countless times so they've become second-nature to me and so extremely comfy and de-stressing
- loved the crash franchise as a kid, so I love the character selection too (shame we couldn't play as N.Brio or Koala Kong though)
- time trials and relic races continue to be challenging to this day
- on the ps1, which is my favourite gaming platform and controller
- my brother shares nostalgia for it so we still have a lot of fun in multiplayer

I really hope CTR gets a HD remaster like the N.sane trilogy. I don't own a modern console, but I would immediately get a PS4 just for that game.

Megaman X.
It has everything I love in a video game; top tier aesthetics, great enemy design, perfect stage layout, fast, fluid movement and replayability, no need to point out the 10/10 soundtrack. The reason why I pick X over X2 is because I feel the game is already perfect. X2 only adds very few features that really don't change much and the rest is just more of the same. I'll have to say though, Bubble Crab's theme shits on any song from X1. The same goes for X3, except this one has awful level design and color palettes.

Game gives off a feeling of adventure that no other game has ever given me before. Closest I ever got was Pokemon Sapphire when I was a child, and this game beats it out of the water really. It's hard to explain just what makes the game have a feeling of adventure, but if I had to guess I'd say it was that the world is mostly blocked off so it feels quite large, as well as the fact the locations differ immensely when you play.

Character, Music, Story and even the models look great today.

Final Fantasy 8

I like it because it gives you a lot of freedom and options. Lots of potential builds and challenge runs, lots of optional content, the card game alone is an entire game worth of content in and of itself and i just really like the characters, story, music, and everything about the game.

It helps that, unlike most people, i wont let a single nonsense plot point that takes 10 minutes to get past (and then forget about entirely) ruin a 40 hour long game for me, and i don't use guides to cheat the game into "broken" status either.

Oh, i also understand that good junctions trump literally everything else. So, unlike most of you idiots, i won't bitch because using magic lowers stats, because i have the right shit junctioned at any given time, and am doing FAR more damage than via using spells.

But whatever...

You faggots can all go play FFIX and pretend that having no customization options, variability or replay value at all makes a "great" game if you want.
