Why is this game so incredibly stressful? Every time I play I feel like I'm close to having a stroke, especially during the tough platforming sections like the start of 4-2 and the end of 8-1. Beat it once in my entire life.

I used to think that the whole SMB1 is hard thing was a meme, but now I'm not sure anymore.

Well, to answer why it may be more stressful compared to later mario games like Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World, It's because of the jumping physics and the way the levels are designed. Many levels in the game are flat and there's a lot of high falls and long gaps between the base ground. Mario can't turn when in midair and the arc of his jump lifts him off the ground really fast and then he falls again like he's an anvil in a looney toons cartoon. I still have a great time playing it but it's very spasmodic. A lot of clones that were made soon after it came out are programmed a lot worse though, because if the screen doesn't scroll properly with the character you can't even see a death coming. In this game more than any other mario game I feel like the deaths come out of nowhere, but the control is so well programmed for a game of its time that it never felt unfair for me. I used to feel that hammer bros and bowser were impossible but the game encourages you to not overthink and just keep running a lot which saves you from most of the times you'd otherwise die.

this. mario is incredibly slippy and his acceleration is weird and you can't stop on a dime the way you can in SMB3 and SMW

Remember anon, beating the game with warps, the 1-up trick, or any cheats or save states is only half the game. Once you're able to beat it all in one go without skipping levels or exploiting glitches, you'll have truly understood what Super Mario Bros. has to offer.

Going to 4-2 and then 8-1 gives you SIGNIFICANTLY less lives than going in sequentially. What you're describing is a much easier way of beating the game.

This is what makes SMB1 better than those games.

This alone is enough to ruin the game for me. The physics are fucked.

If you run out of lives you have to start over from the beginning. I like that though, it makes both victories and defeats have more impact.

I recently set out to beat the game, as I don't think I ever did as a kid.

It was TOUGH! Much tougher than I thought it would be, and I was doing the warp route. I think it probably took me 50 attempts.

I was either emulating or playing all stars, depending on my mood. I have a real NES now, so in going to try warpless on it, and track how many tries it takes me.

>> No.4615726

OP here, I beat it again just now. The weird thing about platforming in this game is that it often feels, as somebody here mentioned, spasmatic. The jump that doesn't pose that much of a problem at first may completely jeopardize a run another time. It rarely ever feels unfair, but there are some questionable glitches. For example in 8-2 there is this cannon that stands in the middle of a bottomless pit. One time I tried to jump at it, but when I was already airborne it shot out a bullet on which Mario accidentally stomped and bounced over the cannon and into the pit, outside of my control. That was pretty unfair.
8-4 is kinda funny. When you're small the underwater section seems like the easiest one. The Bloopers can't reach you when you're at the bottom. However when you're big or when you have a fire flower, it's really easy to get hit.
All in all, the relative difficulty and arcadeness doesn't take away from the fact that this game is still very addicting.

OP here again. Sorry to all who more or less agreed with me, I was being a massive retard and a faggot. All I had to do was to git gud. Reached 8-4 warpless today, still having some trouble with Bowser when powerless

yeah, I always thought laser point precision movement in platforming games was dumb. that shit is needed for run and gun games where the main thing is dodging bullets, or action platformers where enemy placement is its usually where the difficulty lies.
