I just tried Dance of Death. It's not really that good of a map and it's ugly. Anon, you need to replay doom episode 1/2/3 and make small/medium maps based on them to get better at mapping. Don't just focus on zdoom things until you get better.

I play a lot of games, really. I alternate a lot between SNES/PSX/N64/PS2 games and community-created stuff like Zelda Classic levels and RPG Maker games, though.
Lately I've been digging through the Megaman franchise. The Megaman 11 announcement has me unreasonably excited, I've never been big on the franchise outside of the SNES games. But I kind of just wanna play through all of the games, now, so I've been going through the X series.

So why do people here dislike QC:DE so much? So far it seems fun, but it has flaws.
Issues I've noticed myself:
>Single player is broken because enemies have extremely aggressive AI that breaks intended level design (i.e. enemies that are supposed to lie in ambush rush after you, or what is meant to be a circlestrafing big arena fight turns into everyone surrounding you and pounding you to death
>Some maps are broken as due to big hitboxes, not all champions can walk through all corridors. That affects both single player, and decreases amount of maps viable for MP
>Competitive balance is all out of whack. Some abilities like BFG or Menelkir's minotaur are WAY better than useless shitty ones like Bitterman's armor gain
Also personal nitpick:

I don't really like DBT's stance on cvars and customizing the experience.
I also really fucking hate how the graphics look--the portraits are shittily scaled down, pixel ratio mixing is all over the place, and the weapon sprites are just one frame moved around.

As far as gameplay goes, it's fine outside of the usual balance shit, but it's easier to post about the stuff I hate than the stuff I like so I complain about it more often than not.

It's got a lot of Quake in it, from the environments to the movement. Quake 2 and 3 specifically, it's really got that techbase feel. Once you get a high fov in there, and start strafejumping, the game feels fun as hell. The only problem is that you need to play on a medium difficulty, if you play on nightmare the hitscanners make you want to kill yourself. The cool shit you can do with a chainsaw, and the charge mechanic on the BFG are huge highlights. The enemy design is cool. Lots of pluses, but a couple minuses.

Play through it, make your own opinion. But, at least get a higher fov working before you really dive in. You have to put sv_cheats 1 in the run commands through steam, but after that, you just hit ctrl+tilde to pull up the console, g_fov ___ for your FOV. It's pretty simple but you might need to tinker a bit. Have fun, bud.

I'm way more okay with Russkie Visor than I thought I was gonna be, even if instead of a secretive first-in-a-line-of-clones Arena Eternal warrior he's now a CS:GO-speaking cultist child-killer who was number eighteen or something in a series of failed experiments. Master Levels is the fanmade .wads, and really, only part of it is fanmade, the 21 main levels it comes were all made under contract. Some of the Master Levels have quality that is on par with the IWAD levels. Beware though, the other part of Master Levels is basically D!Zone.

Final Doom is a collection of two commercial Megawads, which can be run as IWADs. They're practically equal, if not better than the id levels. If you're going to play Final Doom, consider Perdition's Gate, as it was going to be part of Final Doom. Perdition's Gate is the bootleg tape of Final Doom.

FDA - Ultra Dis by Glaice (Mr. Chris)

A quick E3M8 replacement by Glaice. Honestly, not too much to say about the map. It does what it needs to as an M8 replacement and is pretty damn easy.

It takes places in a big, marble arena and once you kill the spider mastermind it's GGs. The arena itself looks nice with it's extremely high ceiling and gigantic windows. It makes me wish there was a bit more gameplay to make use of it.

Like I said in the video, I'm always happy for more maps from Glaice.

An E2M8 replacement from Glaice turning the Tower of Babel into an actual tower and a very tall one at that. The maps shtick is that as you ascend the tower each time you round one of the corners you take ever increasing hordes of monsters.

It's another fun little map but I don't see myself going back to play it again. That's not to say it's bad but rather there won't be much difference in your second playthrough.

Maps like this further reinforce the idea in my mind that I'd love to see full episode replacements from Glaice.

The third and final(/first) map in Glaice's M8 replacement series - Ultra - replacing E1M8.

The map description as per the readme is: "The conclusion to Phobos Anomaly in a slightly grander scale in terms of design and end episode opposition." This sums up the map 100%. Same concept (bar dying at the end) but on a bigger scale. The arena looked good but again, not much gameplay. You circle strafe 28 Barons with your rocket launcher then exit the map.

I understand the concept that it's taking E1M8 and expanding upon the original idea and that's pretty cool but when you play it you're left wanting more. The same goes for the rest of the Ultra series.

I'm not a fan of Plutoniaguy's retreads over the Doom shotguns and slightly different saw, but everything else in the kit is good fun. The revolver is nice, the machinegun feels good, and the plasma replacement is a powerful hitscan weapon to fulfill your inner Chaingunner fantasies. Then there's the grenade launcher where things can go hilariously south.

I suppose having a SSG that's largely similar to the vanilla one is more appreciated when you compare it to what the contemporaries are in each class. Like shit, BTSXguy's own has as much range as it has PS3 games.

1. What it takes to make a fire/blood system like Brutal Doom? Specifically speaking, the wall blood splatter?

2. I saw this guy's map that could load certain sectors only when necessary and unload other parts to save memory. This was triggered by the player opening a door, which created an awesome effect of openess. How is that possible? Is it hard to implement?

3. How could I create a projectile Parry+deflect system? For example, imagine if doomguy could deflect fireballs by punching them.

Strife had some really gorgeously drawn graphics among the pre-rendered stuff.
The animations on a lot of those things are very smooth and consistent, some real love and attention went into those parts.

For it's flaws, I think it's a shame it got sandwiched between Duke Nukem 3D and Quake (wonderful games), because I think more people should have played it.

There's always drama in every community, the Doom community isn't unique in this regard. There's always people that don't get along, sometimes for entirely made-up reasons, sometimes for extremely exaggerated reasons, and sometimes for justified reasons.
The only question is if you dig deep enough to find it. But I can assure you, 100% of the time, it's never worth it.

FDA - Operation UAC map03 - 'Biochemical Lab'

The strongest of the 3 maps of Operation UAC I've played thus far, both in visuals and gameplay. I like the small touches like beakers etc in the chem labs as well as the roomba enemies. The music track works really well with the map too.

This map is tougher than the first two but still very easy. The boss fight at the end might be broken where you can stand behind crates and just shoot it over the top of them.

Some variation in light levels would go a long way in giving this map more depth visually as it's pretty uniform in it's light levels.

Finally finished my map for Joel's mapping contest, after hours of polishing and balancing. My original idea kinda fell through the longer I worked on it and I decided to scrap it and started from scratch, and spent the past few days working on this map; I decided to try recreating a few maps from Doom 2 in name and theme alone and started with Gantlet, and then decided I wanted to try The Focus as well and ended up kinda stitching two maps together to fit the one map limit sue me for using a technicality loophole.
The ending's kinda rushed and a bit of a joke on Joel since I was running out of time but otherwise I think each half of the map came out really solid and well done. The first half is more focused on being a gauntlet (my idea was a boot-camp trial), so resources are scarce once you're in it and there's a lot of hell to fight off; the second half is more focused around twisting and looping paths with new openings in a tightly knit area. Any feedback is appreciated!

I can have it pretty bad at times, and I'd like to try cutting down on it some.
I like saving my progress and I'm not a pistol start kind of guy, but sometimes it's so bad I save multiple times per encounter, even if it's not even a hard one, sometimes.

If you went that route, you'd have to change basically everything in the game, like animations as you said, as they're all tied to that 35 ticrate. Door/lift speeds, crushers, hurt floors, powerup timers player acceleration/deceleration, gravity, movebobbing, light flickers/glows, scrollers, special Boom sectors/linedefs, screen melts, intermission text, ending sequence, netcode, etc...

Well I have some bad news for you: Decorate and ZScript is what's hogging down the most performance on GZDoom, and if you double the ticrate, all the thinkers and scripts and parsers would need to work at that ticrate, even if they are halfspeeded for compatibility.
Doubling the ticrate would cut your FPS by at least 40%, even more in cases where there's too much shit around and the engine starts chugging. That's too much performance hit for little to no benefit.

I am a bit of a Quake traditionalist. I specifically refuse to touch any version of Quake made past 1996, meaning I refuse to use any source ports and instead play in DOSBox-Daum (better frames than vanilla, where I get odd sound artifacts).

After years of doing this, I have gotten lonely, especially since the shovelware packs I have collected include mostly a lot of multiplayer levels that nobody else cares about. Eventually I found a friend willing to play my particular version of NetQuake and cater to my exact quirks.

So I have been trying to get Quake 1.06 to work in multiplayer without success. I set up Dosbox Daum to create an IPX server at port 19200. My ports are rather open from around 10000 to 29000, so this is within the range I set up.

Utilizing Tunngle, I got them to connect up to the IPX server. They are said to be connected. I load up Quake and set up an IPX server. They load and try to connect. They get an error and disconnect.

Now, I am not sure the exact error from memory, but I do know the server itself was shown with one player in the map and the name of the server shown. Which suggests the Tunggle side was working fine and that it is on Quake's end. So what exactly might be limiting someone from joining my Quake server? They have tried pinging the server, no change.

Does anyone have any experience with Quake 1.06, perhaps in a DOSBox environment, that could offer some insight? Perhaps NetQuake in general and a way to work around this while not utilizing source ports or anything made after 1996?

Brutal Doom is kind of harder than the stock game, but not dramatically so, and there's lots of wonky balance problems, like fragile cybers, and the code being a Rube Goldberg Machine. See, the best part is that it's not that Brutal Doom makes the game too hard, OR too easy.

It makes it both. As in, it takes the difficulty curve, tears it up, grabs it and fucks it in the ass until it squeals. Because of powerful hitscan weapons and headshots some parts become much easier (e.g. Archvile is changed so you can headshot him and his fire doesn't obscure the screen so much - which makes him MUCH less dangerous) - while some parts (e.g. spectres which become almost entirely invisible or agressive AI of hitscanners) make other parts much harder.

Some parts are easier, some are harder. As a result, levels have a janky broken difficulty curve that has nothing to do with original level designer intended.
And that's one of the biggest problems with BD.

The current design of Bombshell was probably a design that was created later in development of Forever, after the development 'rebooted'. Eventually they gave up on her and replaced her with Captain Dylan as Duke's sidekick for DNF.

And don't worry, they wouldn't create a design completely from scratch - if only because Bombshell (the game) was pretty much taking exisiting half-finished Duke game and releasing it at lowest possible cost.

Admittedly, some of the secrets can be pretty obtuse if you're not playing on easy (where half of them are marked with candles) and most of them require paying close attention to textures, with a few requiring awkward jumps to reach. I guess if anything, it's good for the people that like secret hunting even if it's difficult (don't worry about that fixed version, the 8th secret is just some extra ammo in a small closet meant to fill in empty map space in that Tom Hall "waste no space" way). And yeah, the SSG is a bit of a crutch so I tried to only reward it for one of the more abstract secrets (requiring you to hit a non-obvious switch), and instead gave the plasma cannon as a sort of fill-in power weapon (if you didn't find the rocket launcher before). The last room's "door" is a floor raised to 1000 units that starts as soon as you start moving, which translates to about 28/29 seconds, meaning that once your invincibility runs out you'll have about a second or two to run for the exit unless you want to kill the archviles; I figured that (since he hates archviles so much) Joel would immediately panic and start running around, to it's meant to be a kind of prank on him without being a dick about it.

With map 6 this mapset is definitely picking up the pace. The traps are nastier and and the arenas more impressive. Now you're getting locked in close quarters with cacos and mancubi and the archvile is introduced (albeit in an fairly painless fight). There's another instance of a scripted event, in this case a revenant killing an imp, during which the monster is invincible which looks silly.

The large lava area is quite impressive and has a few of the tougher enemies such as revenants. That being said it could use more of each enemy type. There's a hotel looking structure with some "rooms" occupied by imps when they all could be. There's two revenants on the top raining rockets down when you could easily have 4-6 up there.

The map culminates with a boss fight with what is essentially the maulotaur from Heretic. His attacks do a fair amount of damage but can be dodged without much effort. Monsters teleport in during the encounter however they are low tier enemies such as imps and lost souls. There's an invulnerability sphere that helps but I feel should be tagged for HMP and lower as without it the fight is straightforward on UV.

I'm glad these maps are ramping up and I'm excited to see where the next three go.
