Only played the translated SNES version of the original. It's pretty fun if you're one of the few who liked Lagoon, as the combat is similar (incredibly short range slashes at an angle). Some fun setpieces, but it really felt I was playing Ys Book I when there's a Book II that continues it sitting untranslated, where game elements are refined.

Meant to play the MSX versions sometime, they're translated somewhat. And Fray just looks 100% adorable. There's a section in the original that goes full shmup, so Fray being an actiony shooter rpg makes sense.

The SFC had odd changes to the combat. Normally you have a two style bump combat like Druaga or Hydlide where you need to hold a button in order to increase your attack at the cost of defense.
The thing about Xak is that the most effective way to fight is pushing enemies into walls.
