Ken's Labyrinth. Everyone was busy playing Wolfenstein3D and Doom until Duke Nukem 3D hit the scene, but Ken's Labyrinth was my shit back then. This game was everything Wolfenstein was and much much more. Live in-game maps on walls, vending machines with items, weapons, and powerups, all kinds of crazy enemies and secrets, and relentless difficulty. I was bored stiff playing Wolfenstein after playing Ken's Labyrinth once, and I never went back. If you like early 3D FPS games, you owe it to yourself to take a stab at this.

That was actually one of my favorite parts of it. It was like being trapped in a nightmare where nothing made sense. The live in-game maps that showed where you were at helped add to the surreal atmosphere, since they made no logical sense at all.
>coding guy in charge of visuals
And sound, and level design, and everything else. A full 1-man team shareware title. And speaking of 1-man team shareware titles:

Army(Campaign), pic related. Originally called Army, but it changed to Campaign at one revision for no apparent reason. A very simple turn based strategy game that used a dice based system for moving and attacking. You start the round by having your 5 dice rolled, then you moved your units across the map using the numbers you got, or attacked if adjacent to an enemy. The foot soldiers were the weakest, and moved 1 space for each number on the die, the calvary was medium power, and moved 2 spaces if I recall correctly, and the cannons were the heavy hitters but moved slow I think. Whoever had forces standing after it was all over won. Very simple game, but it was fun to burn time with now and then. Got it on one of those 100/200 in 1 shareware CD's full of 90-95 era DOS shareware and never have met anyone else who's played it before.

Kye

Everyone thinks of SkiFree, Chips' Challenge, Jezzball, and the other Microsoft Entertainment Pack titles when they think Win3.1 specific games, but I always go to Kye. This one I heard was pretty big in the UK where it was made, but I never knew anyone here in the US that played it other than me. Solid action-puzzle game that required good reflexes in addition to planning. Had a shitton of levels, and even came with a level editor so you could make your own. One of the best Win3.1 exclusive games, and unique for being a charity shareware title that you could send in your proof of donation to Save The Children and get instructions on how to remove the beg screen, plus additional levels.

Return to Ringworld. It got me into Larry Niven. It's got some flaws, some more serious than others, but I had fun with the CD-ROM version moreso than most graphical adventure games of the era. Most of the puzzles are straight forward, aside from a few early on that are just bullshit, and the voice acting is decent.

The best part is the computer console available from the start of the game until you reach Ringworld, that contains a game called Outpost Alpha. Pic related. The game is entirely optional, and can be ignored, or played as often as you want. You play against three AI opponents, who ever can build their outpost first wins. You need one of each 8 types of sections, and you need to put down framework before you can put up a section. You can only have one of each type in your outpost. Each turn you play a single build card if you have one, and then you have 8 temporary and 4 long-term effect cards, and meteor/rocket cards, agent/counter-agent cards, and cure cards reflecting the four long-term effect cards. If your opponent doesn't have the corresponding section of their outpost, you can hit them with a temporary effect card, forcing them to skip a turn. You can use the long-term effect cards on anyone, forcing them to cease building until they cure it with the right cure card. You can use the meteor cards to wipe a section of an opponent's outpost, or a rocket card to defend your own from a meteor card. And you can use Agent cards to steal a card from an opponent, or use a Counter-Agent card to steal a card from an opponent who just tried to use an Agent card on you. Games can be over fast, or last for ages, depending on the luck of the draw. I've probably spent more time playing this mini-game than the actual game, even though I beat it.

Time for more shareware.

Bolo Ball. It's a turn-based puzzle type game. Pretty basic, you just push one of your balls each turn down the playfield(straight down only, there are no angles), and attempt to land as many of your balls as possible without them going off the bottom of the playfield. The arrow blocks move the balls in that direction, switch directions, and the gray circle things are portals that drop balls out the other side. You can also get points for getting the yellow colored blocks on the playfield. On a long game, all balls still on the field turn into yellow colored blocks, and you get another round and fresh set of balls.

It's nothing amazing, and I'm convinced the CPU cheats, but it can be fun and was a bit more memorable than most of the flood of minor name shareware.

Games nobody else played?
Heh, easy mode for me.

Arctic Baron, a.k.a. Transarctica. You control a huge train in a post-apocalyptic world which is perpetually in winter. It's a strategy game with real-time combat which, unfortunately is pretty bad due to poor controls. After you fight the Union's trains a couple of times, you then spend most of the game actively trying to avoid doing that.

War, Inc. A sort of mercenasy company sim (though not in the vein of Jagged Alliance). You did research to unlock various vehicles/engines/equipment/weaponry, played on the stock market (could even buy out companies, and that added bonuses to various things) and did missions. The missions were pretty convoluted since you needed to make sure you didn't spend more money than you earned from them. You could (and sometimes needed to) have multiple bases, but the control scheme was cumbersome and the actual combat usually devolved into blobbing more and harder stuff than your enemy.

Interesting. Small-time company for sure, calling themselves Battle Sim Software. Their website was already dead by 99, so the only chance of a full version of this game existing somewhere is if someone spent the big dollar and bought the full version in the 2 years they appeared to be selling the game.

Unfortunately, given that it was a small operation, there's a good chance that everyone involved has long moved on, and all materials have long been destroyed. This is true for many old shareware titles that didn't come from Apogee or Epic.

You can get the ghosts to cluster onto one square and avoid direct conflicts by stringing them along behind you. This is normally pointless because enemies will just bunch up behind you so you'll have to fight them on the way back anyway. The ghosts, however, are not impeded by walls so it's possible to cheese their direct approach technique to bypass them both ways as long as you keep them fairly close.
Castle Chimaera has ghosts as well so you'll need to string them along and blow past them far enough to despawn them if you want to get any rest if you've lost /never found the cube.

I'd saddens me no end to see such a project go down like that. Nowadays games try to stick to proven and working designs instead of trying things out. This game however tried to blend 360° shooting and RTS elements, and the result is unique. The only games I 'm aware of that have tried that are Battlezone and Urban Assault.

The shareware version is worth checking out, although depending on the hardware you might need to find a way to FPS-cap it, because it seems to measure time in frames. Fast computers break the gameplay completely.

I still play this sometimes. It's just me, right?

Looks more like TK took (huge) inspiration from Alien Breed.

But I alway suspected that the Hotline Miami devs were fans of Dream Web.

Same anon, I couldn't have been the only one playing Microsoft puzzle games growing up.

>The disc includes ten all-new puzzle games, some of which were designed by Pajitnov, although it's never made clear exactly which ones

>The 7th Legion

I've never heard of anyone IRL or on this site who has played this game.

It's pretty crap, as expected.

The DOS version of Pac-In-Time. Came bundled in a value set that included MegaRace and a few others. I've never heard anyone talk about it. The rope swinging was actually kinda fun. The console versions are significantly shittier and different.

I got this for Christmas as a stocking stuffer surprise gift one year. I presume it was being dumped for like 5 bucks. Can confirm, it's shit, but I've never liked RTS games anyway.

I never managed to make my friends get interested in CC. They'd always go for stuff like KKnD/C&C and Starcraft later.

[pic] I'm sure i'm not the only one who's played it, but no one seems to know what i'm talking about any time I mention it. Maybe it just gets disregarded.

This game left a huge impression on me as a kid.

Creatures 2. I thought it was a pretty big game at the time, along with its predecessor. But I've never run into anybody who's ever played it, or even heard of it, either online or offline. Not since JRChat.
