I beat it, it was definitely my favorite so far. a big leap in graphics, sound, and story from 4 and even 5

next is 7 and I played it a while ago but I never got past disc 1 so I'm looking forward to that too

>> No.4608768

also while I really liked the ending cutscene it made me even more guilty for not waiting for shadow, which I didn't know was necessary

problem i have with six is that the story loses momentum and never picks up again. You just wander around finding friends and powering up, then challenge the boss whenever you feel like it.

Also found the battle system to be underwhelming. A few characters/abilities were overpowered and everyone could use magic. Depth could have been better I think.

yeah I agree with you but I still liked that part because it reminded me of the part of chrono trigger where you could go around getting the best equipment and stuff right before you go after lavos

>>4608783
I liked the combat because every character felt unique, but I also thought the freedom in 5 was overwhelming and didn't give the characters individuality

Okay. Not sure why this warranted a thread.

Where's all this blogposting coming from?

yeah cause /vr/ is so clogged up with superior threads.

It gets a lot of hipster hate around here but there's a reason it's as popular as it is.

never played a 16-bit FF, my introduction to the series was with VII (PAL fag). should I start with VI or go chronologically instead?

>> No.4609351

OP, you've made like 20 threads about this game while playing it. Tone it down a bit, OK?

Every time

trggrd (I'm a "PAL fag" too, just saying; this is way too common)

Yeah in ff6 I liked how Edgar had a OHK move, and then Cyan had a OHK move that auto-targeted an enemy, and then Sabin and a OHK move that auto-targeted and required a street fighter pattern on the d-pad. So individual.
Ok I am exaggerating but the first time I played it, I kind of wondered why bother with any of the other characters.

I don't know. I always recommend starting with IV. To me it is the quintessential 16-bit JRPG. Almost everything about the mechanics were in place. The game's story is a straightforward tale of redemption. Cutscenes are breaks in the action that come and go quickly.
The game is also very well balanced given that it does not allow the player to customize the party. The designers can tailor each dungeon to the specific spread of abilities available. The game is linear, but at various points you have freedom to explore the world.

I think FFIV is one of the most under-appreciated Final Fantasy games while FFVI is maybe a bit over-rated.

pay close attention to the story of 7. I would love to hear what you think of the plot turns and twists and if they are ham-fisted and artificial. Its been a long time since i played through it. So I would love to see if someone with a matured brain thinks the same.

thanks for the info, was already leaning towards IV as chronology pleases my autism

played most of the series post-FFVII, and the 8-bit games on Nesticle back in the mid-00s (also the DS port of FFIII, for my sins), but for whatever reason never got around to the SNES/SFC games. intrigued to see how balanced the gameplay is between the 'pure' early-JRPG style of the 8-bit games and the more heavily story driven games of the post-16 bit generations

4 has better battles, 5 has better character tweaking strategy stuff, 6 has better plot and pacing.

There's not much that suggests you should play in any specific order other than preferences. Though, minorly, there's a particular twist they all pull that's a little cooler if you play 5 last.

IV isn't bad but it's not quintessential at all. It marked the beginning of the more cinematic, linear, plot-focused approach some of these games would adopt from that point on, but this genre is so varied you can't really say it's quintessential. It's only quintessential for a small, yet popular subset of JRPGs.
>>4609468
>Nesticle
The memories. Pic related.
>>4610087
Yeah, pretty much. They recovered with V but the series got worse with each game after that with the exception of maybe IX. They began to cater too much to those that played for the story.

4, 5, & 6 are the pinnacles of FF games. the rest are just graphically updated with useless tweaks and changes to gameplay.

>> No.4610460

>>4610385
Nah, 1, 3, and 5 are the pinnacle of classic FF. 2 is a cool experiment and proto-SaGa, and 4 and 6 are the best plot-focused ones that are still fast paced enough to be enjoyable for the gameplay. Later games are too damn slow / plot focused / easy.

>multiple pinnacles
The only pinnacle is 15 because the original designer who came up with the atb said it was made to simulate real time action, which was how he envisioned the future of rpgs.
If you want to stick to old games, it would be 5 since that was the last of its type after 4 marked the major mechanical departure. If you actually like 4, then the pinnacle is whatever the latest entry is that still counts for /vr/.
