What are /vr/'s thoughts on Super Mario Bros. 2? I just started playing it, and it's certainly different from what I'm used to.

I like it. It's fun. Completely different from the others, and easier as well, but still fun.

I'm too young to know about the reaction to the game when it was released, so does any of the older /vr/ troopers have insight on the general consensus at the time? How did people generally feel about the different gameplay and style?

When I was a kid I thought it was ass compared to SMB3. Don't think I ever finished it back then, either.

Now, I still think not-so-highly of it because they re-skinned a game instead of just giving us the real one. But that's just me being jaded more than anything else.

>>460768

But no, really. As a game, it's pretty good, I just would have rather had the actual SMB2, AS WELL as the original that this one was based off of.

It was very well-received upon release, by both fans and critics.

I mean, to the people at the game this was only the second Super Mario Bros game. So, we had two games and they had two different styles of play. There wasn't anything weird about that.

I mean, heck, Mario was also playable in Donkey Kong, Wrecking Crew, and Mario Bros Arcade. All of those games were completely different.

We never thought anything of it. It was just a good game with Mario. The whole labeling of SMB2 as a black sheep game didn't start until years later when people realized it wasn't the 'true' Super Mario Bros sequel.

Put it this way. The game was popular enough to be released in Japan as Super Mario Bros USA.

Started as the actual SMB2.
Scrapped, replaced with SMB2J ("Lost Levels").

I first played the NES version (MARIO MADNESS) but it would always freeze or glitch on me.
Super Mario Bros. All-Stars (+World) was my favorite SNES game in general, so I may be a little biased but the game certainly looked better and never froze up on me. Plus I'm a huge casual so I like being able to save and choose what level to play.

When fighting Birdo his quick jumps make landing on the eggs way easier instead of Luigi's floaty jumps, then BAM you grabbed the egg in a fraction of a second and smacked that bitch in the eye with it before she could get another one ready

When fighting the eagle head that attacks you want to quickly grab the mushroom blocks and throw and if you miss it's ok you can grab again quickly

You can get two. The mushroom house hidden behind 6-5 always has one, and you can get the hidden one in 6-10 (though not as an item, ya gotta wear it). And then you can warp backwards to World 5 with them.

Not playing World 5 and most of World 6 four times each with all 3 whistles? Then, you should give it a try. It's fun on a bun. You can get 4 hammer bros suits as items that way.

There are also a few in World 7 (but you can't warp backwards from there). Two of the mushroom houses have a 1/3 chance of giving you one, and there is one in 7-10. Might be more.

I liked it well enough. If I were to break it down, I'd do so as follows:

Pros

- It turned Toad into a full fledged character in the Mario mythos and gave Peach that awesome flying ability (which is sadly seldom seen in official games).

- It introduced a plethora of new enemies and bosses like Mouser or Triclyde

- It continued the legacy of Mario, expanded upon it, and added much to the mythos.

Cons

- You can't kill any of the enemies by jumping on them

- Wart isn't as cool as Bowser

- It's all just a dream (way to make the player feel like they've accomplished nothing at all)

- Wart and some of the other bosses never return

With Bowser, you know by looking at that bipedal dragon with a spiked shell and metal arm bands that shit has just hit the fan. This guy was born to fuck you up.

When you look at that fat frog in a robe.... you kinda wonder if maybe you'd stumbled upon the arch nemesis of the Care Bears.

Wart is a much harder boss fight, but there's really no comparison. And Wart *never* returns except in a cameo in Link's Awakening and re-releases of SMB2.

It only further cements the game as the black sheep of the series when Mario can't kill by jumping and the primary villains never return.

Other than that, it's a solid entry worthy of the Mario name.

You smack them with veggies, or jump on them and pick them up and toss them at each other.

I always thought it was hilarious that Peach threw a bad guy at some other dude, and even better, hitting Birdo with his own offspring.

It's a good dose of your favorite food pyramid section.

Platforming, of course.
