I've been looking for other survival horror games or games that play similar to old RE for the PS1 or at least that generation

I'd like to learn more about JP-only horror games or more unusual stuff like hellnight or chaos break

I already know of and own some of these:
blue stinger
carrier
the ring
illbleed
overblood
chaos break
countdown vampires
TRAG
deep freeze
nuclear dawn/chase the express
hellnight
echo night 1 and 2
the note(though I know nothing about it)
silent hill obviously
koudelka
parasite eve 1 and 2

also the gamecube version removed that dude for some reason

alone in le dark, but they're superhard , you wont even be able to get passed the first frame

>> No.4601150

Deep Fear is pretty good
D2 is a favorite of mine
Aconcagua is japanese only and really good but for some reason they chose to use a point and click interface over tank controls even though the game plays exactly like survival horror
Devil Man is pretty cool if you're familiar with the story already

You should probably play some of the best ones at the same time you play obscure ones, OP. There's a LOT of these third person adventure games out there. It's not an exaggeration to say that 5% or more of fifth and sixth gen games loosely fall within this genre.

I've pretty much gone through the "best" ones, IE dino crisis, SH, PE, RE, and I'm looking for the lesser known ones

I've got a relatively firm grasp on the NA/EU PS1 horror/tank control library, but shit like saturn and dreamcast I don't think I've got a true grasp on

I did try to play deep fear on an emulator but the saturn emulaor I picked up didn't actually emulate games, and if it did I didn't figure out how

Check out Aconcagua and Devil Man they're Playstation games. Cry a tear for the bogging down of the Mizzurna Falls translation since it's complex and investigation focused. Anon mentioned Deep Freeze it's pretty fun but more of a tactical gunfighting game. Echo Night 2 was translated a couple years ago but it's first person. ...Iru! is another that's first person. Not translated but playable. You might want to check out Vampir Kyuketsu Densetsu even though it's even more an RPG than Koudelka or PE and it's untranslated but it seems awesome and is pretty obscure even here.

Deep Fear is okay. Technically very solid at least, unlike most RE clones. FYI there is a leaked NTSC-U version of the game going on, officially unreleased, so you can get the best of both worlds: English language and 60hz.

Truth it, don't expect to find a forgotten gem in RE clone.

You should at least play Alone In The Dark: a new nightmare; and try the Evil Dead game on PS1.

The best I can recommend are non-survival horror action games that do take a lot of inspiration from survival horror, like Vampire Hunter D or Deep Freeze. Deep Freeze is hard as balls past the 2 first levels though.

Nocturne for PC.

I haven't played it yet but saw some review that recommended it a while ago. It apparently is still labeled as freeware/abandonware so you can download it if you want.

D2 was so unique. Have you played D? If so, is it worth looking into? I remember getting about 5 minutes into the PC version before encountering too many technical issues to continue. It seemed rather different from D2 though.

D2 is the only of Kenji Eno's games that really stands up as a game. D and Enemy Zero have fantastic artistic vision and really use video games as a medium. D2 was kind of a "sell out" where he embraced a lot of successful mechanics that other developers had created but he still managed to make them feel unique and give the whole thing his signature aesthetic, if slightly diluted. His greatest game IMHO.

Why is Survival Horror considered a genre when none of these play alike?

Martian Gothic is another. It's clunky as shit though and the ridiculous puzzles+unkillable enemies make it a nightmare to try to beat. If you can get it for dirt though I'd at least give it one session.

Dunno, to me, Enemy Zero is the only really good game Eno made. And by far the most conceptual gameplay-wise.

don't you love the vagueness of the genre?
honestly at this point nobody actually knows what survival horror really is, just that if it's got tank controls and monsters it's probably survival horror

that fellow right there was the only change I noticed, but I'm sure there might be one or two more

yeah, it's PC and gamecube version, but I doubt the DC and GC versions are that different, graphics wise

though I haven't played the dreamcast version of 3 and don't know if they removed that long boy
