I think SMW has a lot of things that are pushed to show off what they can do on a super nintendo, like Yoshi, layer 2 shenanigans, etc. Mario 3 feels like a presentation of pushing the NES to their limit while SMW feels like showing off "here's what we can't do on NES". Depending on you roll, one will feel more comfortable than the other.

Mario 3 definitely has a lot more items but honestly, I'm mostly just using the leaf in that game. Just like how I'm most likely just going to be using cape in Mario world. they let you control your jumps people!

Level design in both them is excellent though for their respective systems.

Highly disagree. World is still the only Mario game with upward/diagonal up throwing mechanics, as well as its own distinct physics and controls that makes it the favorite of the romhack community. The New series actually went back to a more similar smb3 approach with the controls, as well as adding some new mechanics, but nothing like smw.
Both 3 and World are timeless classics.

I've beat demon souls to dks2 and I would consider smb3 to be on the same level of difficulty as the souls games.
They're not brutal, arcade hard, but certainly they take some perseverance.
A truly breezy game would be the gba klonoa.

I found enemy design in SMW to be annoying as fuck. Everything takes 2-3 hits to kill and bumrushes you like a cunt while respawning infinitely. Sometimes the game would literally just spawn an enemy on you with instant, unavoidable hit. Where were there even football players, what a random thing to have in a Mario game
