F-Zero if you prefer wilder, more aggro, faster gameplay.
Wipeout if you prefer more of a regular racing game that still feels pretty fast, and feels more like the machines are actually hovering (F-Zero feels more like a magnetic field is between the machines and the soil, which IMO is why it feels swifter)

WipEout by leaps and bounds. For one you actually have to employ the basics concepts of racing such as out-in-out, lane keeping around opponents etc. and hitting the walls is usually punished. The best classic installment for beginners is Wip3out (SE if you can get it) and the best modern installment by far is the Omega collection. Combines HD, Fury and 2048. HD and Fury themselves both containing the best tracks from Pure and Pulse.

F-Zero is also good, but it's a VERY different game that rewards different things. Don't even put them in the same ring, they're not comparable.

>>4586613
Turbo "weapons" in WipEout have a chunky kick to them in Pulse onwards. In the original WipEout HD/Fury, stopping your ship and starting the thruster again will cause a thump.

>>4586717
Try something faster than Vector or Venom.

>>4586610
Weapons can be toggled off in custom races in certain installments.

>>4586714
This, as I said

There's always the music too. F-Zero has memorable tracks just as WipEout has good picks from the era it was released from. WipEout tends to have picks from whatever British nightclubs were playing at the time, since the first game was conceptualised in one (They were playing that beach boys song, hence the name). I think the PS1 games even play their music in a CD player too, but I could be wrong.

hitting things is punished in f0, you just aren't good enough at it (not a dig at you) to play at a level that it matters

to beat master you need to not only drive perfectly, but also snipe the top 3 people in the points lead via a side attack (they'll beat you even if you drive perfectly on enough tracks that you need to dot this.) you might have to hunt to get that side attack for 4 tracks by lining up a perfect vector on a turn or straight to hit them. you might only get once chance

I like f0 because the emphasis is reaction time and adaptability. you'll need to change the vector of your turn/drift/line if someone is blocking you, if you need to alter it to snipe a person, if you fucked up your grip on the fun physics on the halfpipe/tunnel/cylinder

also air control

you still need lines, but you cant just put the track to memory, you need to adapt. there are also basically 2 styles you need to master, speed/grip and drifting/no grip

This is a stupid complaint. Setting yourself up for turns is a key aspect of any proper racing game because of a little something called physics, it's what makes the games fun memorization or not.

>> No.4587590

This guy screaming that F-Zero X is baby because of the wall stuff at the start (as if that was easy or trivial) seems to be judging the game by looking at some YouTube videos for a bit and that's it. Walls punish you except in that limited circumstance and even then only doing an specific thing, in an specific sliding setting (max accel). Mastering sliding is absurdly hard in that game, and it's not an exploit, it's in the manual. When you get to exploit-y flying tricks the game becomes insane.
Beating the staff ghosts with jumper settings (near max speed) and not abusing anything requires you to be really, really good at the game.

Don't dismiss Mario Kart. The first game is great and it and F-Zero have a core thing in common. Most racing games are about learning the optimal route and trying to execute it as well as possible each lap. Nothing wrong with that, but something that adds to F-Zero and Mario Kart's replayability is boost power and coins. In F-Zero tracks you often have to choose between a boost plate and an energy field, in Mario Kart you need to get coins to reach your true top speed. This makes it so you can't do the optimal route every lap and every lap is a little bit different. They finally brought the coins back in Mario Kart 8 but the items are so over the top in that one it kind of overshadows it unfortunately. But Super Mario Kart is a great game.

Nah, get the NTSC-J version. SE has weird floaty controls, while the regular wipeout 3 is tight. You can still do the p-mar project skip with the regular non-floaty controls (even on venom with feisar) if you boost enough.
Also the japanese NTSC version has all the prototype tracks. Gotta love that LS105/GP02.

Pretty much the only things wrong with Fusion was the track design really was bottom of the barrel, and the camera seemed a bit too low at times. The music is give or take and some classic teams were swapped out, however it's explained why in the manual. It sets up a great excuse for Pure a few years later to return to a more classic-rooted formula.

The original Wipeout had pretty cool characters, they had short bios in the manual and they had a win/lose reaction at the end of each race. Each team also had 2 pilots you could select, each with their own paint scheme and logo. Shame they dropped the pilots as playable characters in favor of just the teams in the later games.

"so fast omg" isn't an AG-racing thing, it stems purely from diehard fzero fanboys who regard it as the only racer. Nothing wrong with that, but it's an exception to the rule. For me, AG-Racers are about learning to control something very different and challenging compared to the real world (ie. cars) and learning the tracks that are designed for you to control them in. Each game poses it's own challenges and steep learning curves, and the skill carryover is far lesser than standard arcade or sim racers, which is why this little subgenre has always had the biggest draw for me. I feel like people who want everything to control like fzero, or people that want every new ag racer to be fzero, or the people who think the same thing but with wipeout, are kind of missing the point.

If your movement is limited and requires a learning experience to get the hang of, then you are actually completely backwards, because this means the developers of the tracks have to understand what the physics and movement are and aren't capable of, and need to make sure every corner is possible with every ship at every speedclass given these parameters. On a near 1:1 player input, your options are extremely increased as you are not limited by the physics of the craft. For my taste Wipeout simply has too many steps or stages of controls between the player and the game, whereas F-Zero is controlled more directly with 1:1 tactile controls. Wipeout is like playing Microsoft Flight Simulator while F-Zero is more like Star Fox or Afterburner. or Wipeout is like ARMA with negative mouse acceleration while F-Zero is like Quake. Or Wipeout is like Out of this World or Lester the Unlikely while F-Zero is like Mega Man or Sonic.

I thought you disliked this passive stuff. Why not forge your opinion by playing?
Snaking is a category, if you dislike that you can play Max Speed in GX, which is closer to a pure racing experience. I get what you mean, X and particularly GX are a bit "exploity" in high level play, but isn't so bad, and it still takes racing skill.

yes it fucking is, it's so bad that getting a great time is 100% dependent on doing said tricks.

Your criticism of relying too much on some tricks is quite valid. However, doing those tricks isn't easy nor dumbed down for plebs at all, just not your cup of tea (or not "pure racing skills"). It's not as if this was a long running series still going and babyfied by Newtendo, for instance.

Do you even like racing games generally? Learning your vehicle and how it interacts with the tracks is the biggest source of fun in 90% of racing games outside of a few VERY arcadey exceptions. Even F-Zero is at its most fun when you have to deal with limitations to your controls in my opinion, such as the slide.

It's one of my favorite genres. I don't mind learnign different types of controls at all, I like the different games and the diversity of vehicles in GX. The style in Wipeout is just a style I really don't enjoy. I like my controls to be instantly responsive. If I press left on the stick I want to immediately start turning left. I don't mind learning quick turns, throttling, stalling, and learnign to play around the slide (i.e. learn to play without triggering my machine to lose grip. I enjoy Death Anchor and Sonic Phantom in GX) , though I hate snaking and don't do the style where you slide intentionally.
>>4594310
It has nothing to do with complexity. It's the sluggishness. It feels like I'm playing in mud and on ice at the same time in Wipeout.
>>4594341
I didn't say anything about a vertical axis either.

>> No.4594430

Right, so our tastes are the opposite. I like it because it makes it very easy to make minor mistakes when cornering. I like mechanics that make keeping your grip and recovery difficult because they make each turn feed into the next and require my full attention at all times. Plus when you slide deliberately and recover, it's very satisfying. That's on top of just giving the vehicles a sense of weight and presence that F-Zero doesn't have. I prefer simulators over arcade racers in general, though.

I guess so. I think it's analogous to Quake vs. Counter-Strike. Bullets simply going where your crosshair is pointing vs having to learn spray control, free movement vs having to stand still for accuracy, being fast enough to push chokepoints vs. needing nades to push chokepoints, etc.

The early classes in Wipeout have you racing pretty slow, where F-Zero starts you off pretty fast right off the bat. Wipeout punishes you by taking away your momentum so once you advance to higher difficulty levels it becomes very difficult to maintain consistent speed, when F-Zero stays pretty fast even if you're not racing well. It also has you driving at over 1000 km/h whereas Wipeout is around 300 km/h. Of course the F-Zero tracks are huge as a result and the Wipeout tracks are more compact.

>>4599410
The learning curve is so dumb in these games that I don't blame people for not getting into them. That being said when you (finally) get a feel for how airbraking works the game feel is incredible. Yes, high level play is ridiculous in Wipeout. However I wouldn't call the more obsessive part of time trialing the selling point of the series (although for long time players it is of course where the games shine). Figuring out how wide/narrow to take turns and resisting the instinct to abuse the airbrake is of course how you get impressive lap records.

If I haven't played in a while it's the music, visuals, thrill of speed and satisfaction of chaining consecutive perfect laps that make me want to play, not looping Odessa Keys for hours straight to refine the brake pattern on the last chicane (although inevitably I find myself doing this after a while).

It's really that they just used X's stats, without really making them match.
Some kind of match, but most don't.
Kind of makes trying new machines a crapshoot. Sometimes you get a solid vehicle, sometimes you get the Wild Goose.

Another thing, I've always felt like stating machines only in Body-Boost-Grip is really misleading, because there's more factors going on. Handling, acceleration, top speed, boost length, weight, deacceleration rate and more all effects how a machine can perform. Some machines cannot do certain turning techniques, some other machines have really floppy turning that's not even alluded to in their stats.

Another thing that really tickles me in GX is that the accelerator isn't really an accelerator.
The A button's job is basically to only bring you to your top speed. Which means it also brings you DOWN to your top speed from a faster speed.
Which not only means that machines de-accelerate at different rates, but it also means you can release the A button when going above top speed to de-accelerate at another rate, because now you're letting the game's physics take over instead of the Accelerator. Creating the technique that's called "Momentum Throttle" by the community.

GX is just truly bizarre.

Yes, side attacks are crucial. You don't lose grip while using them and lose minimal speed when done right, so they're essential. Check "Jumper" records for the game to see how important they are.

You have to study external sources to make any sense of half the systems at play or stumble upon them randomly, instead of just playing and getting better naturally. Wipeout lays out everything it has from the get-go, all you have to do is learn how to use it well.

It doesn't in the sense that it doesn't explain them in detail but you can get the hang of both through a bit of trial and error. Not something you'd want to whip out a guide for. The shortcuts and some creative flip uses in the later games are more in that vein

Thanks. I'm not much into the racing genre but wipeout seems really cool, I love the sci fi aesthetic and feel of it. well, he thinks if a game is boring it makes it a sim. Wipeout is the solitaire of racing games. Barely any important control, no action, no feel for impact or anything at all. That's because you're a dumbass who's of it from spectating and never actually tried firing up a game and getting a time that isn't a complete embarassment. Otherwise you'd know that sim racers are anything but boring and demand huge amounts of concentration and incredibly execution. Some of the most fun and intense experiences I've had in racing games came from sims, namely Richard Burns Rally.

the ignorance is astounding and typical of someone whose perspective is entirely spectator, nothing is more exhillerating than hitting a superfast line and geting great times, you have to execute very technical planning to achieve it but you wouldn't know.

The technical involvement in calculating the best lines and mastering the skills to execute them then forever trying to improve is deeply exhillerating, you just don't have the brain for it but many don't and look at racing and only see it in the dumbest possible terms ie who's in front and who won, they don't see anything else from the speed entries into corners, the lines, the exits, the brake control, the gear use, how close to losing control in pursuit of that hundredth of a second and so on.
