Had the great idea of asking this super late and near the thread's limit.
This is my last Scripting question, I don't want to bother you a lot with this.
I want to set the final battle with the Cyberdemon to end when every monster tagged 666 in this room is killed.
Problem is, the monsters tagged with 666 just spawn with the SpawnSpots scripted when Cyber takes damage and as such, the script think there are no 666 monsters yet.


I have tried a lot of things including running the script on Cyber's death, adding a ACS_Execute after the final break;, going "script 23 ENTER" or open treats them like runaway scripts, tagging Cyber with 666, tagging the imps already on the room with 666 and everything failed.

There was a brief mention some time ago that advancements in GZDoom could possibly make Cyberrunner more realized, but that Booster mod he's working on probably isn't too far off the mark. On hold at the moment, hexen souls is kind of a massive, unmanageable mess at the moment, and I hit a brick wall with it a few months back. Hexen Souls was going to be a large campaign with it's own maps and monsters and stuff - perhaps a bit too ambitious.

Can't compete with the lists they threw at you, but I'd say the most related (sprite shooters) are Wolf 3D, Hexen, Heretic, Rise of the Triad, Dark Forces, Shadow Warrior and Necrodome.

Serious Sam and Painkiller have lots of open areas were enemies are thrown at you, ambushes, traps and such.

Descent/Freespace is a complete classic. Very few similar games (only Forsaken comes to mind, and the Terminal Velocity Saga). The Thief saga is pretty good too.

Brutal Doom has a REALLY annoying fanbase, and a really annoying creator. It pretty much breeds toxicity.

It's not a bad mod objectively speaking if you take it as just that - just another mod, one of thousands. When people try to claim it's best mod ever, or better than vanilla Doom, or they come into this thread to stan for Mark - that's where the issues start.

I understand why some BD fans created Project Brutality, Mark is the weakest part of Brutal Doom. Yeah, pretty much exactly that. Booster is pretty much a straight-up reboot of Cyberrunner.
It's got an actual theme, more sensible coding rather than zanhax out the ass, doesn't break the engine, the abilities are more intuitive to use, can be played on normal mapsets instead of requiring super-specialized maps, etc.


Yeah, La Tailor Girl is pretty fun. Swapping outfits for different gameplay effects on the fly is really, really cool.

Possibly, although it's kind of janky and requires setting up multiple aliases (and having the weapons). It's easier to just rebind the various weapons closer to WASD and/or set up a bind to always choose the best kind of weapon (i.e. using the same key for NG and SNG).

Sadly I already tried something similar anon and it didn't work.
The monsters aren't present when this scenario starts, they appear as the Cyber takes 1000 damage. As such the message appears inmediately.

My idea is to lower a floor blocking the exit when the Cyberdemon and all the demons tagged 666 that appeared with SpawnSpot are dead. I don't know if this is possible to script or if I'm expecting a lot from Doom scripts.

Here's a screenshot of map03 from my HD maps project. There's a couple chaingunner nests on the other side of the fence. I'm not entirely sure as to what the objective should be in this level. The monster randomization system sometimes places turrets instead of chaingunners as well, so I'll have to open it up in SLADE to make it all uniform.

That was the assumption of some dumb motherfucker with poor reading comprehension who replied to Tom Hall's tweet where he confirmed that Blazkowicz was Keen's grandfather. This is a relationship that has been present ever since the release of an official strategy guide for Wolfenstein 3-D back in the 90s.

It was never assumed (up until very recently) that Keen is/was Doomguy's father.

Keen is assumed to be an 8-year old kid during the events of the first game, which were assumed to occur in the time of the release of the game (1990). The events of Doom (1993) have been assumed to occur at a pretty distant time from ours, maybe 200-300 years later.

Like someone said already, for Keen to be Doomguy's father:

-Doomguy should/must have been born around 2005-2010
-Keen should have retained (or perhaps increased) his level of intelligence during his adulthood in order for humanity to make the jump to Mars and colonize both Deimos and Phobos and start dabbling with inter-dimensional teleportation.

Which is something reaaally hard to believe, even for a videogame. Basically you're asking me to assume that Keen's the founder of the UAC, and Keen genuinely the goodest and purest boy on Earth for him to found the company that ultimately dooms (huhuh) this planet

The mobile games released last decade were the first ones that attempted to interconnect id software's first three major games (Keen, Wolf, Doom) by having one of the protagonists of the second Doom RPG mobile game named "Stan Blazkowicz", which is not just a direct reference to B.J. Blazkowicz, but also plays an important role in later sections of the game, as a very familiar demon from Hell makes references to events from Wolfenstein's own mobile game that was also released during that time, hinting that this Stan Blazkowicz character is a very distant descendant of B.J.'s family. Oh, and that character wears a space marine uniform strikingly similar to Doomguy's, as you can see in this very picture

This timeline that connects B.J./Keen/Doomguy has been "officially" applied to the mobile games that were released by id software's mobile team at the time, which was lead by none other than John Carmack, who wanted to dabble with Java mobile programming because Carmacks gonna Carmack.

This timeline has been somewhat adopted by many members of this community as "official" and the way gaming websites picked up the relationship between Blazko, Keen and Doomguy recently might as well be the foundation for modern id software to apply it in the current "canon". To those that despised Doom Slayer's Lore item choice a few months ago, feel free to take this as a warning message.

In general: if you have a puzzle in your level, make it extremely clear to the player that it's a puzzle. This goes DOUBLE if the puzzle is about finding something including finding a path forward. I don't care how you do it, if you literally plop text on screen "gee, I gotta look for the other way!", or by adding an objective display to the game, idgaf - if player is asking themselves "what the hell do I do now?" you failed as a designer.

Is it? Both Painkiller and Serious Sam showed preference towards hordes of enemies teleporting in in waves, over a traditional 'corridor shooter' style.

The fact is that it just makes levels easier to design - consider that Doom mapping is an art that took decades to perfect - and that's for one game; for a completely new game (with new weapons, mechanics and enemies) you'd need to invent that 'art of mapping' all over again. Consider the difference in quality between Episode 3 of Ultimate Doom, and between some of the megawads that won Cacowards.

So you gotta create an interesting game with enemies that interact with each other and environment that interact in interesting ways; THEN invent a good way to design levels for these; and THEN design a 10 hours worth of content (reminder that Doom and Doom 2 don't even have 10 hours between two of them); oh, and do all of that within span of a two-year development cycle so your studio doesn't go bankrupt.

Both SS and Painkiller levels (and so are Doom 2016 ones) are basically series of big, pretty arenas with linear sparsely populated corridors linking them BECAUSE it's the best way to make a Doom clone when you're a small studio on a budget.

Similarly, it cuts out a lot of walking around and backtracking, which is a better fit for modern gaming audience.
The truth is that a Doom style game wouldn't sell because of all the walking. If you wanted to remake Doom nowadays, you'd need a hook to make walking around more interesting.
For example, oh, I dunno - make your game a horror shooter, bathe all corridors in darkness and add a limited flashlight.
Oh wait, someone already did that. It was called Doom 3.

The only way we could return to classic Doom formula is if someone managed to completely reinvent it for the modern age.

You missed the part where PK, SS and nuDoom levels are completely linear with no backtrack except for exactly 3 kinda-open-areas where you go for long walks in a big open space between arena-like encounters (which kinda invalidates some of your points). In nuDoom particularily there are numerous walk sections between encounters

Hey Anon - I've done an FDA of your map and a small review. FDA is below and so is my review. All in all - really enjoyed the map and highly recommend it.



A 1024x1024 map posted in /vr/ that I enjoyed a lot. The style of the map is it's a techbase that's being overun by Hell (consoles dripping blood etc).

The difficulty was close to perfect on UV - it could have been a bit harder but a very obvious secret gives you access to a plasma gun and lots of ammo which really makes the next few fights a lot easier.

Overall, I really enjoyed the map, fun fights, looks great and is nice and quick. Recommended download for sure.

Better than Borderlands in joke department.
Much worse in gameplay department.
The only good thing about it is melee combat, but even that is good only in goremeat department.

1) The levels are pretty big randomly generated landmasses. at first looks decent, but there are like 3 tilesets with very limited tiles, so the second time game sends you to the same tileset it will all look the fucking same, and the effect of random environment is gone very fast.

2) Enemies are also dumb asbricks to the point where you can bypass almost everyfight just by runnin throuhg with basic dash.

3) RPG Leveling is terrible, as everything is leveled up to you which means your level does not do shit. On the opposite - if you dont upgrade your weapons through randomly generated gems, your guns do fuckall of damage.

4) Different guns that are supposed to be different most oftenly are just directly better than the rest, especially with gem upgrade system that makes it possible to give any properties to any weapon.

5) Due to "random" generation of environements that always leads to the same fucking environments missions become very boring very fast.
Due to the same random generation of loot gems you can have either extremely poor playthrough where enemies turn to literal bulletsponges, or the opposite - it becomes a cakewalk on highest difficulty because you got particularily powerful gem.

The story is that the sequel put exponential scaling into the NPC's favor the deeper you went in that also just makes the level disparity in loot more extreme. The NG++ equivalent of BL2 did a bandaid fix by just making the 'slag' debuff element work in the player's favor more but it doesn't change how nearly every enemy becomes a fucking damage sponge.

Playthrough 1 is generally fine and doesn't really have the issue yet since you're like Lv34 by the end of it, getting at the end of The Fridge in the second is where it becomes noticeable. honestly, the revolvers were the first pistol replacement sprites I actually liked and could do something with. I never found angled revolver sprites I like, and I'm not willing to do that rotsprite bullshit to simulate muzzle flip.

there is this sprite though, and I don't remember where the hell I found it, but it looks like I could manage animating the slide of this. and dakka's sprites are already a mess when it comes to artistic style, so oh well.

I think this might sort of apply to Thanos and the rest of the D4T/QC:DE team as well, because some of their mods are centered about recreating gameplay aspects of other games, so these mods are always obvious and unsurprising, outside of a few twists or little things.
If they've done an original concept/weapons or characters, they could have made something unexpected, that isn't limited by how faithful they are at recreating a game, but another issue might be how they want their mods to be played on Zandy and D-touch, so they may not reach some full potential by discovering something neat, that can't be accessible in other source ports.

Does anyone know how to stop the console from dropping down when starting a new game in GZDoom. If I use 'endgame' in console to get back to the main menu when go and select my difficulty map01 starts but the console drops and I have to close it (this is a pain for recording videos).
