No, enemy design in this game is great.
I also think enemies have interesting AI behavior sometimes.

Jet Force Gemini came out between GoldenEye and Perfect Dark Yet receives nowhere near as much critical acclaim or condition. Why is this?
Is just goldeneye had a powerful franchise backing it up and is more popular because of nostalgia and/or perfect dark did a better job of being a shooter?

JFG is not a FPS, it's a TPS with controls that take a while to get used to (and the best control scheme isn't even the default one).
Also, while PD received a lot of acclaim, the really popular game was Goldeneye, which came out during 5th gen's heyday.
JFG was a late N64 game from 1999 and while it received a lot of acclaim, I guess again, the third person shooting element didn't resonate as good as FPS controls with the majority.
Anyway, JFG received good reviews, and personally it's my favorite of the N64 Rare games along with Blast Corps, but I can see how Goldeneye or PD might have more mainstream appeal.

I seriously have no idea why I can't go back to this game. I play plenty of games with retrospectively shitty controls like Gothic and Alone in the Dark and other stuff, yet I cannot at all get back into this either on my original console copy or the Rare Replay version.

It sucks because I really really love the atmosphere and all the weapons, and I remember being able to play it just find. I just can't re-adapt

>shitty controls
JFG's controls make a 180 degree change when you set them to "Expert controls" on the menu. It lets you move in all directions using the C-buttons while you're in aim-mode.

I guarantee JFG would be touted as a classic if not for the mandatory Tribal collectathon.

The Tribal collection thing is so overblown, it’s a meme. Almost of all the tribals in every level are clumped together in an easy to access spot, and the hunt opens up the path to new levels.

I’ve always felt the whining about the tribals came from soft gamers who wanted to play a cute looking Rare game like JFG but were just plain terrible gamers, and getting up to the half way point was hard enough for them so they complain bitterly about the difficulty increase.
