Why did I not play this sooner?
Phantasy Star IV has aged *incredibly* well.

Awesome music and graphics, fast gameplay, no backtracking, just the right level of difficulty, sidequests, likable cast, and cutscenes that convey character and sentiment better than many modern games.

Stellar. Easily the best JRPG on Genesis, serious contender for best of the generation.

>> No.458231

Has it really? I tried playing 2 and couldn't make myself continue. If 4 is really that good, I'll guess I'll give it a go, but what about 3?

>> No.458239

The anime stills are a nice touch.

Yeah, I played this for the first time recently, too. Most fun I've had in ages. If you like REALLY retro RPGs, check out 2, as well.

2 is for dungeon crawler fans only. Its great for its genre, but its not an easy game or a modern styled one.

4 plays more like a typical mid 90s JRPG. The presentation is way above average, and the graphics, music, and gameplay are all awesome.

3 tried to do some very innovative things (it came out in 1990, and had branching story, multiple paths, customizable magic, dynamic music, and more). But it fails at everything because it was give to a B-team and rushed out. Its not terrible, but it isn't good either.

What are your guys opinion on the first one? I enjoyed it immensely, though it's not for everyone, but I believe the dungeons redeem any of the games shortcomings.

Only time I had to grind was the standard right out side the first city grind most old RPGs have. What it does have are dungeons that basically require taking notes. Once you get to about the halfway point, the dungeons become far too complex to do by memory. Its a slow and methodical game, but its really, really good if you like that sort of thing.

I love this game, I really do I've must have replayed it atleast 20 times now since I first played it in 95.

To me it is the perfect example of high fantasy, the most perfect blend of magic and technology without being overbearing, I feel that way as a whole for the original phantasy star quadralogy but this is the crown jewel of the series

I hope that some day I'll be able to develop something half as good as this series, as it's that inspiring to me.

4 is easily the best of the entire series. One was way ahead of its time, but still an 8-bit JRPG. Two was great for its time, but has aged very poorly. Three was terrible for its time, still terrible today.

Alys was a very strong female protagonist.

I love how each character in the game has a very distinct personality, and you learn more about the characters in 30 seconds than you would with a 15 minute cutscene in some newer game.

Literally none of the dialogue is fluff (ala Golden Sun or Star Ocean).

Rune and Chaz bickering and trying to out-alpha each other never gets old.

The complete lack of bullshit made me a fan, too. The game moves really fast and doesn't waste your time. JRPGs really took a nosedive in the 32 bit generation. By the end, the genre was basically ruined with slow paced fluff.

I love the setting and atmosphere of the classic Phantasy Star games but in my mind their biggest crime is just being incredibly typical examples of their genre, without a lot of special gameplay elements to set them apart.

I can't imagine them attempting a Phantasy Star 5 without it being pretty bland for today's gaming climate.

Actually I've thought a lot about it, if I made PS5 I'd want it to be a cross between the dungeon crawling of 2 and the streamlined-ness of 4, with some Dragon Quest 9 style multiplayer.

>I love the setting and atmosphere of the classic Phantasy Star games but in my mind their biggest crime is just being incredibly typical examples of their genre, without a lot of special gameplay elements to set them apart.

There may not be anything special in terms of gameplay, but the setting was quite unusual for a JRPG back in the day.

All the games are able to work as standalone titles, however they do take place in the same continuity and PS4 has a shitload of fanservice and references to the previous games.

>> No.460732

PS3 is a side story and the cast of characters in PS3 have no relevance to the rest of the series. In fact, none of the four possible endings to PS3 make any references to PS4. One even forces the Alisia-3 through a wormhole-type-thingy and the ship pops up again just near our own Earth.
It's okay to play but remember the following:
Offensive tec is useless.
In fact, any tec other than Res, GiRes and Anti are useless.
Due to poor programming, attacks never miss.
Healing items, unless they heal TP, are almost pointless.

There's also a secret third choice:
The Vol 32 of the SEGA Ages line is the Phantasy Star Complete Collection. This is not a remake like Vol 1 and 17 but actually more pretty much emulated versions of the original games. The big difference being though that they come with tons of options like the ability to adjust walking speed (which is pretty slow in the originals), the overall game speed and the difficulty of the games (which pretty much just reduces the grind). It also lets you fix some game glitches.

If you don't like the remakes for whatever reason then I'd say go with this. Plus, this one's got IV as well.

It's good, and PSIV has a neat system of Combination Attacks. Use two or more Techniques or Skills in the correct order and you get an upgraded weapon.

The one you'll get the most out of early on is Triblaster: Foi + Wat + Tsu (and as you upgrade those to Na/Gi versions, the Triblaster upgrades as well). PSIV has a setup called 'Macros' that you can use to have common commands; the Macros are the best way to set up Combination Attacks, as well as your 'start of boss combat' stuff like Saner, Deban and other buffs.

That's the potential of 3. It takes place 2,000 years in a vacuum after Phantasy Star 2, so playing with it a little doesn't really affect the other games.

I enjoyed PSO for a bit and you could still relate it to the first four, but I don't like the direction they've gone with Universe and the others. Especially "Numans" ugh!

If there was a new turn-based dungeon crawling Phantasy Star, even if the story wasn't directly connected to Algo, I'd want it to come closer to the 80's anime sci-fi feel of the first games than the harajuku mish-mash of the later games. >Let us recall Phantasy Star, the grand daddy of video game RPGs. Who can forget that game, with its simplistic but oh-so-puzzling dungeons and its fearsome and unforgettable enemies? That was the game that introduced Dark Force. The game that started it all. Almost every game I have reviewed in Shining Forth has some inspiration in Phantasy Star. A classic.

>And then came Phantasy Star 2, which even to this day is thought of by many Sega gamers as the best RPG on the Genesis. It was more than a worthy successor to the Master System classic. Phantasy Star 3 was a dog, a complete sidetrack and not very well implemented. No doubt because of its bad reception Sega seemed to can the Phantasy Star series. Until last year (in Japan) when Phantasy Star 4 was released, and what a fitting end to the series it is.

>The plot of Phantasy Star 4 wisely avoids mention of Phantasy Star 3 and returns us to the planets of the Algo solar system and a whole host of familiar obstacles, from bio-monsters, to atmosphere control plants, to evil towers and to the inevitable Dark Force himself. The characters could have stepped right out of the previous games (and yes, some do) as could the enemies. With the exception of the Neiitems (no doubt lost on Phantasy Star 3's space station) even all the items in the game you have seen before. While some reviews have criticized the familiarity, saying the game breaks no new ground, I say look at 3! In this case "why fix it when it's not broken" comes to mind, and as several people mentioned in letters the sheer feeling of being once again in the Phantasy Star universe (let's face it, this is where a lot of us first ever played an RPG) adds a great deal to the game.

PS1 can be done in about 17-20 hours if you know what you are doing. A lot of that is grind time, mostly for early levels and for gold.

>PS1
If you are doing it blind, then best of luck to you. Easily hit 40 hours between dungeon crawling, finding the needed laconian items and such.

>PS2

Grind for money, grind in dungeons and save often. You have such a wide variety of people and there is a good group of people to use that will make the most sense, but some are more worth it than others. This game take a long while to get off the ground, but it really is the crux of the whole series where everything takes off. Worth playing, but the difficulty curve is crazy.

>PS3
Some call it the bastard, and it is in a way, but it is a unique 16-bit RPG that is pretty interesting and worth a playthrough. Don't skip this. It is worth a playthrough, especially if you are an enthusiast

>PS4
This is the game that is the grand resolution to everything in the series, but poses a lot of questions in the end. This is a masterful storytelling and will give every other 16-bit RPG a run for its money. This is the right balance in grind, storytelling and graphics. A must play

PS - Lots of grinding; you have to run around outside of town to fight enemies, heal, and repeat.

Go play Phantasy Star IV, if you haven't. You're missing out on one of the greatest JRPGs ever. I know a lot of people grew up with a SNES and Squaresoft and completely missed Phantasy Star. Having IV cost ~$100 at release didn't really help things.

Thanks for the memories, everyone.

The Schthak server or something are private servers that still run today, now that the official servers have been shut down. The Gamecube versions are a significant improvement on the DC version and hold a great deal of new content and features. You can even acquire a Tails Chao to transfer to the Sonic Adventure games with a GBA.

PSO had another game on the console, Ep.III C.A.R.D. Revolution. It's a sequel with a drastically different genre from the PSO mainstay, but it's a nice playthrough if the turn-based gameplay appeals to you. I remember the online lobbies being connected to the Ep. I&II ones, so you could chat and play soccer with other folks from this game to that game and even play SFX you couldn't play in Ep. I&II to confuse the hell out of people.

That's what makes the Gamecube PSO experience very lively, it connects nicely to other games and offers fresh content. While you might come across glitches online, online play on the DC version suffered very horribly from hack abuse. Of course, it's pretty much outdated with what you can find nowadays, but it's a very charming and novel experience.

Phantasy Star Online has a pretty good story but you really have to go out of your way to see it, there are a lot of hidden things hidden in certain quests and talking to people in the right order because the game was designed to be played multiple times. The gameplay might bore you a bit without another player to play with, but I've met some people who never EVER played multiplayer and loved the game anyway. I personally feel that once you play with a group you can't go back. You can play offline split screen on the GameCube or on the PC with the still somewhat active SCHTHACK private server. There are also other private servers with increased level up/drop rates around sometimes for people who just want to experience the game without wait.

Also make sure to play Episode III, CARD Revolution for Gamecube, it has different gameplay (card based) but the single player is still good, and the story is very reminiscent of classic Phantasy Star and builds on PSO.

Phantasy Star Universe can be played in an offline story mode on the PS2 but I say skip it, it's pretty bad and has no bearing on any other game in the series. Phantasy Star Portable 1 and 2 are sequels to Universe, they are a little better but I'd say skip them also.

Phantasy Star Zero is a light version of PSO, it is almost an unrelated side-story but is revealed to have connection at the end. It was nice to have a PSO equivalent on a handheld but I found the story/gameplay a little subpar for the standard of the series.

Phantasy Star Online 2 is brand new, it is an evolution of PSO's action combat which is good if you like PSO but it will only be more alien to a classic PS player. It's a fun game but I don't think the story is told as artfully as PSO1. The tone doesn't really resemble classic Phantasy Star much any more.

And there you go that's my opinion. PSO and Episode III are worth playing if you can have fun with the gameplay and thus appreciate the time investment.

I don't think Phantasy Star Zero was too hot, but story-wise, it was pretty straight forward and reminiscent of the classic series in terms of narrative if one takes it as a standalone tale.

It must be the combination of the old school artstyle (same guy who did Lunar), the emphasis on banter with the party, familiar plot elements like Mother Brain that convinces me to think this. Similar thematic and tech level as PSIV, in that both games took place after catastrophes of sorts.

Question: Why was there never a Phantasy Star V? It seemed to have been a popular and successful series. Was there ever a point at which a sequel was in the design stages?

Answer: Actually, when IV was finished, we did talk about what the story of Phantasy Star V would be if we ever made it. It was more a rough concept than a detailed story. We were discussing things like, "Is Dark Force really evil?" "Are there gods in the Phantasy Star universe?" "What is the Light Force in the world that opposes Dark Force?" Is it justice?" If we had made a Phantasy Star V, I think we would have tried to tie up the entire series, the whole Phantasy Star universe.
- Rieko Kodama

Of course, I don't think the current Sega is even remotely capable of making a worthy successor.

>> No.499253

>What is the Light Force in the world that opposes Dark Force?
I love how ambiguous it was in PSIV. The Greal Light wasn't some entity of holyness and justice. Those concepts have no meaning to it. They were affixed by us. The Great Light was just a giant, uncaring, all-powerful being. It sealed the Profound Darkness and left the seal (Us) to do it's job.

I would have loved a PSV where the characters realize that the GL is not much better than the PD.

In regards to tieing up the whole series, I don't think you canbeat the scene in PSIV when Chaz gets the Elysideon.

So I think I should finally play these games.

That's an awful lot of effort for a series of games that isn't text heavy. I mean, the translation in 2 is kind of iffy, and the worst part is how there are no paragraph breaks in the text at all, but given how the game has so little of it, it won't harm your experience. I had no complaints with IV's translation.

He's my favorite character and everyone else is going back to their families or (with Demi and Wren and with Rika and Chaz) they have each other. Rune just walks away.
