It's an adventure game. You play as 3 elementary students who investigate local supernatural rumors. The 3 characters are Naoki, the typical middle class Japanese boy, Sango, a tomboy from a troubled family, and Karumi, who is retarded but also has esper abilities so she can communicate with the dead. The basic gameplay format is you have 2 5 min. periods at school where you choose a character; depending on who you pick changes which of your classmates appear and what rumors you get. The game starts with a rumor that there is a crow with a human face that appears at night at the local park and seeing it bestows a curse that after 100 days someone will die. Each day has a specific rumor that has to be overheard at a certain time and with a certain character or you won't hear the rumor and thus can't complete the investigation. If you overhear the rumor, in the evening, under the pretense of walking Naoki's dog, you go around the town investigating the rumors. Some of the rumors can be solved in one day, some take several days and overlap with other investigations. Also there are times where you have to leave the dog somewhere because he will not enter areas that are haunted by the dead. At the end of each day, you see a scene of the character that you picked for that day at home. This gives you background into the story but also with Kurumi allows you to communicate with the dead. The more dead that you invite into her room, the more crazy stuff starts to happen up to the point where you will actually die. Same goes if you don't not complete all the investigations by the end of the 100 days. There are all kinds of investigations, some being supernatural, some having scientific endings. I was never able to finish the game w/o a guide and even then I had to restart twice because I was killed by the dead or I missed an investigation. Overall, it's a pretty unique and interesting game and the Japanese level isn't that difficult, so even a beginner could play it.

That chart is of horror adventure games on the PS1. Most of them are sound novels but some of them aren't, like Twilight/Moonlight Syndrome and the Yaku games

the text goes by really fast with no way to slow it down, and the font has a little bit more of a hand-written feel, even if the words and grammar are easy enough to understand i highly recommend waiting until you're good at japanese to play this.
