Get good and those wouldn't be issues. They break up the gameplay and feel like bonus levels that incorporate new mechanics. I like the pacing of dkc and it wouldn't be the same game without those levels. I'm not saying it's the best game on snes but definitely top 30.

I think Rare's design is just better design. First, Miyamoto's DK is made entirely out of round shapes, while Rare DK has this interesting edge to him because his face and hair is round - but he has angled, brutish knuckles.
Also, Miyamoto's DK has no recognizable silhouette at all - while Rare's DK is basically a giant square.

I'm sorry but Miyamoto has always been a better game designer than character designer, but Rare always been top-notch at character design.
Battletoads were just TMNT ripoffs, but they all have better and more unique designs that each member of the TMNT, and Banjo and Kazooie designs are simply, but easily readable and iconic. And let's not talk how brilliantly minimalist Rare was, able to turn an inanimate object into characters - just by adding eyeballs to it...

Rare games were best of the best graphically because they deserved it. It wasn't just because they pushed the envelope in graphics technology, but they also had amazing art direction to go with it.
